But MP, the Suns challenge will remain won't it? Actually holding onto these guys in the long term. I don't follow this stuff as closely as you seem to, but it seems to me the go home factor is a killer for the Suns & Lions these days. It seems less of an issue for GWS, though now with fewer injuries (than last year) and a winning team, opportunities for guys just outside the 22 (the two Kennedys for instance) are pretty scarce.

I'd be very surprised if this came off personally.

The Suns will just be glad to get something for Jaeger after their dopey President's ill timed childish rant. I'd expect the Hawks first rounder plus a fringe player would get the deal done. This would see the Suns with indicative picks 4,6,8,15,21,22,24,27,40 if you assume that Prestia will go at pick 6. That's NINE quality picks.

You'd think they'd consolidate the last four picks into first rounders, probably for GWS' picks 7 and 17 which will leave them with picks 4,6,7,8,15,17 and 21. Throw in another if North go for Swallow.

They'll take Bowes and Scheer from the academy so I guess they then need to decide how to play their remaining five quality picks. There's no reason why they can't use this draft to have another crack at building their list, my personal view would be to trade for one experienced player at most and just mine the draft GWS style.

Of course GWS are pretty much also guaranteed 5-6 top 30 picks so their list will also grow in strength

Yes I am bemused by this constant mining of top quality players from other clubs by Hawthorn.

There was outrage when the Swans recruited Tippett from the Crows after winning the premiership once in 2012. Then all hell broke out the following year (when we didn't win the premiership) when we recruited Franklin.

The Hawks have won three premierships in a row (and could win it again this year). But everyone simply nods sagely as they recruit top player after top player from other clubs.

When it's Hawthorn it is seen to be the success of an attractive destination club combined with highly professional list management practices.

When it's the Swans apparently it must be cheating!

AFL changed the rules this year to stop NSW and Qld clubs getting the most out of their academies through cancelling your draft picks above your number of free roster spots. GWS will not be trading their number 7 and 17 for four lower GC picks for extra points because they won't be able to use them. GC's position is not as good as it looks as they actually have too many picks - more than they can use, and they won't be able to easily replace the lower picks with a smaller number of higher picks.

They need to swap multiple picks for players, as not many clubs will now want to take 3-4 lower picks for 1-2 of their higher picks unless they are wanting to draft at those actual positions, rather than use as points for academy and F/S selections.

Or, they need to swap some of their picks for future picks so they can use them all over two years, rather than be forced to lose some of their second round picks altogether or be forced to pay overs for players with those picks.

I wouldn't think we want to let him go but he has a say in it too being out of contract.

I believe he wants to play more than 6-8 senior games a year so I guess it is a matter of what he gets offered and whether he wants to fight for his spot here. Money would also come into as well I guess but I agree that he is a great prospect as we all know that ruckmen are late bloomers

Tippett is a great player, but is often injured. Plus he is 29? Plenty of opportunity for Nankers to play senior footy in the next couple of years. Can we convince him that his time will come?

Nankervis is 22, and the rule of thumb is that ruckmen don't come into their own until 25.
Tippo is 29, thus in 3 years Tip will be 32 and Nank 25. If that's not a succession plan, I don't know what is.
In my view Nank has all the attributes to be a top notch ruckman, so we have to keep him.

From the AFL website this morning which runs the razor over every clubs list. Think they have ours fairly close although Melican has shown glimpses through injury so as a KPD reckon he'll be given a third year on the rookie list. This is in part what they said

The AFL has trashed the swans brand in Melbourne by using the McGuire media group to be their sycophants. Its annoying because it feels like a bunch of bogans bullying an inoffensive student at school with the backing of principle who is also the coach of the AFL team.

Isnt this all against the rules of the draft? Or is the AFL gonna play stupid once again and allow a player to choose where he wants considering he is not a free agent?

I'd probably disagree with Davis: he has looked good at times, in an injury interrupted season. Hiscox has been disappointing. Probably the most disappointing thing is that I've hardly seen any signs of his athletic ability. Certainly can't remember seeing him burn anybody off, in the manner of Rohan or Jetta.

Melican had his best game for the club so far in the GF on Sunday, so would be very surprised if he's not retained. Like Melican, Davis has had an injury interrupted time of it and I'd be equally surprised if he is not retained as well...

I think Davis is doing ok - he did reasonably well in the NEAFL grand final and deserves another year.

I reckon Galloway is a goner, and I think Hiscox isn't going to make the grade as well - I just don't see what all the fuss is about. I think Melican might get another go however.

JOM to whorethorn - who woulda thought. JOM wants to play in Melbourne. Wouldn't whorethorn be at the top of your list. But the GC will play hard-ball on this and it's easy to see why.

IMO JOM is unproven so it's a risk due to his injury history. If he does get to whorethorn it means Tom Mitchell will probably not. As others have pointed out Mitchells value has dropped due to his recent form. I suspect he will stay in Sydney now.

If I remember correctly, they've changed the rules so that from next season, ALL staff are covered under the salary cap. Is this right?
Will be poos and wees be sacking coaches and ball boys to accommodate this?
We already know that Burgoyne is taking a pay cut.
