I wonder if anyone will pick up Mitch Clarke. Maybe West Coast will look at him as a big of big man cover. Can't see us making a play

If you look at both the AFL and NRL over the last 20 years then you need to wonder if the draft actually helps equalisation because the NRL has just as even spread of titles and Grand Finalists
* NRL has 12 different Champions and 14 different Grand Finalists
* AFL has 11 different Champions and 15 different Grand Finalists (Richmond the exception - Hee Hee)
I reckon the draft was brought in for the simple reason that they knew that if the wasn't a mechanism for elite WA talent being forced out of that state that the WA clubs would be unbeatable, and I actually think that is a fair point.Last edited by Mug Punter; 25 October 2016, 11:05 AM.Comment

Is anyone interested in any of the following;
Zac Clarke - I don't rate him anymore but could be cheap and good depth.
Dylan Buckley - Probably not for us as we have Newman and possibly O'Riordon coming into the side.
Angus Litherland - I rate this guy. He hasn't been given opportunity at the Hawks.
I have excluded Ricky Henderson, Mitch Brown and Cam O'Shea as they are likely to go to Vic.Comment

MP (and all), I don't think we can say outright that the draft is an illegal restraint of trade. It simply is not known at this time. Here are a couple of articles from sports and trade law journals that I found with a minimum of effort via google that tend to suggest the AFL's draft system is justifiable and legally defensible:
And here is a relevant quote:
When the New South Wales Rugby League ("NSWRL") implemented a draft system in 1990 it was successfully challenged by the players in Adamson v NSWRL. This article examines this decision, though it should be noted that the rules of the NSWRL draft are no longer in operation. The Australian Football League ("AFL"), however, has continued to use ils draft system and it is argued that the AFL draft rules are much fairer on the players than the rules previously used by the NSWRL. This is because while the AFL draft does initially restrict a player's choice of employer, this is only true for the first two years. At the end of that period the rules provide players with some genuine bargaining power to help them choose the employer of their choice. It is suggested therefore that the AFL draft is distinguishable from the draft system once used by the NSWRL that was declared invalid by the courts. There are still problems with the AFL draft in that clubs are able to initiate the trade of players without the player's consent, but it is suggested that this can be solved by the introduction of a consent clause. It is also suggested that the restrictive nature of the draft can be reduced by the introduction of a limited form of free agency for players who have been playing for a certain period of time and/or played a certain number of games.
As far as the trade ban imposed on the Swans, it may not have been the Swans who would have had standing to challenge it so much as the players (because they would be the ones unfairly restrained from earning their livelihoods). All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Surprised by this - I hope the Suns are keen, otherwise I wouldn't be completely averse to us offering him a cheap contract - handy depth and at his best a decent player. Only a year old than Towers as well...."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I'd argue list clogger goes a bit further than that - i.e. someone who is clearly never going to make it at AFL level, and is just filling a spot on the list, or is past it for various reasons - see Tom Derricx for an example."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

On the subject of the draft and who we should pick:
* I didn't realise that as recently as June no less than Emma Quayle was rating Todd Marshall as a potential No. 1 pick: AFL draft: Who wants to be the No. 1 draft pick?!
* If Freo were to take English then it seems there is some prospect that SPS might be available at our pick. He could be a great fit - has pace to burn, great kick on both feet and is unselfish which fits with our needs beautifully. Too bad about the 'go home' issues.
* It's really hard to know exactly who is going to be available to us at pick 9 but looks like one way or another we are going to have some elite players to choose between. Cal Twomey rated Logue the 14th best player in his October Phantom Form Guide. At worst, our pick will be pushed out to pick 11 (or 8th if you exclude Bowes, Setterfield and Perryman). That means we should have a choice of 4+ players rated at least as good as Logue, and a real chance of one of the players Cal rated in the top 8.
* If we want a KPP with pick 19 and Marshall is gone, options include Battle and Kerr (KPFs) and Cox and Rotham (KPDs). However, I reckon we pretty much just go with best available talent with our picks 9 and 19 which is what we have said we will do and what I expect we will do.All opinions are not equal.
