Probably not the best timing to chuck this in the mix with the rookie draft imminent but...

I just found this evaluation of our selections at the ND by Knightmare (aka Chris Doerre) posted on espn. What I like about it is that, relative to most of the other similar articles, he is willing to mark down clubs' overall performance and gives you the individual players' weaknesses and reasons they weren't taken earlier. Here' the link to the whole article: http://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/i...-pick-assessed.

    Sydney
Selections: Oliver Florent (11), Will Hayward (21), Jack Maibaum (45), Darcy Cameron (48)
Draft overview: Overall a varied mix of types were chosen by Sydney with some pressing list needs addressed.
    Player by player analysis:
Pick 11 Oliver Florent: Forward and midfielder who moves smoothly through traffic and came on during the TAC Cup finals series and the Under-18 All Stars exhibition match. Showed impressive resilience this season and while his play only in the latter portion was up to the standard of a first-round prospect, his improvement and performances in the last month of the season is why he was selected here.
Pick 21 Will Hayward: Promising lead-up medium forward who came on late in the season, kicking 13 goals in his last two finals for North Adelaide in the SANFL Under-18s. He is a strong mark overhead, very athletic with genuine speed and possesses an impressive vertical leap.
Pick 45 Jack Maibaum: Shutdown key defender who regularly limits the output of his direct opponent and was named to the Under-18 All-Australian team. The concern with Maibaum is that he is not a rebounding or intercept marking threat with just the nine marks from four Under-18 Championships games and an average of three marks over his seven TAC Cup games this season.
Pick 48 Darcy Cameron: Solid choice as a 21-year-old mature-age ruckman after years of being on the fringe of selection. Cameron is capable both through the ruck as a tap ruckman and playing forward, with 106 marks and 36 goals from his 19 WAFL League games this season.
    Verdict: B+

Personally I think we deserve an A. Florent was the best available with our first pick; Hayward was a great choice for us with our second pick; Maibaum wonderfully fit our needs and the other comparable players were already taken (except for perhaps Macreadie - I wonder if we gave him much consideration?); and again with Cameron we drafted to fit our needs and got the best ruckman left after two others had been taken (English and Darcy). I don't think we could have done much more with the first two picks and with the later one we were factoring in our needs even though there were other good players left (including Luke Ryan who, fortunately, we did NOT draft with our second pick as, reportedly, many forecast).

As for the rookie draft, there are a number of worthy players left, hopefully we can lay our hands on some of them. I have never really heard of Sam Fisher but I am comforted that because he played for GWS in the NEAFL we must be very well informed about him. Incidentally, does he count as a Cat B rookie??

I'm confused about why Drew Petrie wasn't selected via the Pre-Season Draft. But I've had a think about it and this is what I've come up with:

      * they clearly only intend to play him if their first choices are unavailable, therefore they don't want to waste a list spot on him; and
      * his salary will not be counted towards the salary cap if he's a rookie and not on the senior list (is that right, can someone please confirm?).

All in all, seems a bit humiliating for such a North Melbourne hero. But he very clearly wants to play on, even if it means travelling across the country (presumably with his young family in tow) to be a lowly rookie at a foreign club despite his Shinboner status. Maybe his finances are tight and he needs another year of good income? Still, he would be relatively well placed to get media work I would have thought, more than most players given his long and successful career, senior involvement in the AFLPA and experience in the media already (there was a podcast he was co-presenting last year on afl.com.au with Matt Thompson and Andrew someone-or-other).

        Ben Ronke??!!

The powerful midfielder is an impressive athlete. He is fast, agile and can run all day, and he uses those attributes to break lines. He has improved his kicking by learning how to find more time and space from congested situations. A strong second half of the year propelled him to winning the Calder Cannons' best and fairest. He can hit the scoreboard as well.

First pick, Ben Ronke. Midfielder B&F at Calder cannons. Give it a tick.

5 rucks taken and still no Tony Olango. Ludwig your favouritism has been the kiss of death for Olango and Abe Davis so far. Don't spoil it for Hewett!

And that's another 2 rucks (if you count Drew Petrie - but he has been taken for the ruck coverage he can offer).

                Pick 2 Robbie Fox
                187cm/87kg midfielder
Started his VFL career for Coburg as a rebounding defender but, after building his fitness, a move into midfield in 2016 paid dividends for the mature-age prospect. Fox, who was a former under-20 state basketballer in Tasmania, was among the Lions' best players in six of his 13 games. He also finished first in the beep test (14.7) and 20m sprint (3.06 seconds) at the Victorian state combine.

I love the left field nature of the selections at the rookie draft and the way they can throw up names you have never heard of.

Who is Shaun Edwards? Hasn't there been an AFL player of that name? Is it the same person?

2016 AFL Draft prospects: Benjamin Ronke
                        Name: Benjamin Ronke
                        Position: Midfield
                        Height: 181cm
                        Weight: 75kg
                        Draft range: 40-50

                        Pub summary
Strong, contested ball winner with explosive acceleration.

                        Strengths:
                        Contested footy
                        Acceleration
Can also move forward and kick goals

                        Weaknesses:
                        Foot skills
                        Decision making under pressure
                        Overall

Ronke is an aggressive inside midfielder who enjoyed an impressive second half of the season in the TAC Cup, to burst into draft contention. He demonstrated a great ability to win contested ball and has great acceleration out of stoppages. Ronke featured in the best players for Calder Cannons in his last seven games of the season and played two VFL games late in the year. He can however, rush his disposal and can be inconsistent by foot. Essendon has committed to recruiting him as a rookie if he slips through tot he rookie draft.

Best selection yet, if you are factoring in the name. Meet KPF Toby Pink who kicked a behind from 70m: The forward became a YouTube sensation in 2016, after kicking a miraculous 70m behind in Glenelg's under-18 grand final victory. A mobile, tall target at 195cm, Pink is also capable of roaming further down the ground. Composes himself well in front of goal and is strong overhead when marking the ball in contested situations.

Huh. What is happening. We are now shown as taking Sam Simpson a F/S with Geelong and not Sam Fisher. Think the draft tracker has stuffed up.

So 2 midfielders (Ronke, Fox), tall mobile forward (Pink), forward (Fisher) and utility (Edwards).
