If the we can get Hawthorn's 1st and 2nd rounders we could have 2 picks in the teens and 2 in the 30s. We might be able to improve this with trades for Towers and Nanka (or Sinclair).

There are a fair number of players with pace and skills, especially in the top 30, plus some decent KPP prospects later on in the draft if we want.
Yep I think this draft is rated as good but not exceptional.

I like that we are not going for players. Part of this is due to cap space, and we may still well bring in a player, but in the current inflationary environment (Wells at $1.8m over three years, really?) I really think we are better growing our own.

Rose is ok at best. We need small fwds that can get the ball.
The days of the 10 touch 2 goal small fwd are over, need more feathers in your cap.

So then I wonder if that means we want lots of early picks in this draft, to load up with our next wave of mids.....

Or are we eyeing off a big name from another club and need picks to secure him?....hmmmm
Hopefully hardball, because hawks haven't offered up Bruest yet.......and picks is way harder for hawks to get done

I think that the Hawks picks 1 and 2 would get the deal done.

I also suspect that Gold Coast are probably happy to take a future first rounder plus one quality player for JOM. The rumours are that GWS and GCS are pushing hard to get the top 4 picks at the draft. This would be massive for them as they can let the likes of Bowes slip to 5 and potentially save massive draft points.

GWS will get Freo's Pick 3 with a swap of their Pick 7 plus Cam McCarthy and GCS have 4 already. It is believed that GCS will offer Brisbane picks 6 and 8 for pick 2 plus Hanley. But that all means nothing if the Bombers get Pick 1 and choose Bowes.

So, my prediction is the Suns/Lions deal is contingent on GWS getting pick 1 from the Bombers. I suspect they'll go hard at it but not too hard, WHE plus picks 13 (from Carlton for Marchbank from the Gibbes trade) and 15 would have to be tempting for the Bombers.

That would leave GCS with picks 2 and 4, Jack Bowes and Scheer from the academy, four high quality picks indeed. Plus Hanley and Barlow should see them much stronger in 2017. Then at the end of 2017 they get two first rounders plus whatever they get for Swallow.

GWS will get picks 1,3 plus pick 16 and two picks in the late 30s. Plus what they get for Steele, Pickett and Stewart should allow them to draft Perryman, Setterfield, Macreadie and at least one additional academy kid. But for them they are back to a level playing field at the end of next year as they won't have surplus players and won't have the future picks. But gee, this draft should set them up nicely for when the Victorian clubs come in three years picking off all their free agents. And realistically they'll only be able to pick one or two academy kids and throw the rest into the general pool which is how it should be but I'm glad they are actually getting some NSW kids on their list because they actually have precious few.

Part of the problem with the Suns and GWS taking these academy kids, and paying with them from their second rounders for points (GCS have four second rounders) is that this years draft again gets distorted and your first pick 17 effectively becomes like a pick 20.

Rose is not a finished product yet, but he does a lot of the right things. He wins his own ball. He's an evasive runner, tackles and marks well, and can kick a goal. He will be a good senior player.

Not convinced of that but will watch his development.

My concerns - he is not a penetrating kick. He is not fast. he is not a great tackler. he is not fast. he is not a great overhead mark. and he is not fast.

Small forwards need something extra. Its a really really hard position at AFL level. i've watched his afl games and some of the NEAFL ones. He isnt hard like mcglynn or puopolo. He's not super evasive like cyril or betts. He cant kick it fifty metres.

i had towers comfortably ahead of him at NEAFL level. And I dont count the GF as I'm pretty sure dean and management had already had a conversation along the lines of. "Thanks very much for everything Dean."

I'm not saying he wont make it but to play small forward you just have to be super at something. When you saw papley in the pre-season you saw this tackling machine that was hitting players knocking them over and creating opportunities. Rose isnt super at anything yet. but it will be hard for him because I dont think he is fast enough to beat someone on the lead nor nuggety enough to knock bigger guys over.

                  Rose is a monster kick

and the stats show that he is a very effective tackler as well. I didn't think he was quick either but I saw he made the final of the GF sprint (not sure where he finished) so he can't be that slow.

Also did alright in the GF sprint. Has a very nice sidestep and reads the play extremely well.

Expect him to fill out a bit next year with improved upper body strength..

Excellent prospect to take over from Hewett on the HFF when he goes to the midfield.

Rose missed the start in the GF sprint and was right up behind the place getters at the finish. Surprised me with how well he ran.

Rose may not have a stand out attribute but he does most things reasonably well. Most encouraging for me is his rate of improvement over the two years he's been on the list. He probably won't ever be a superstar but I think he has the potential to be a valuable member of a best 22 if he keeps working hard and builds his physical strength and fitness.

He is also an awkward match up

Takes a fairly good defender with him

2017 will be a make or break season for Rose I think but I like cut of his jib. He was gifted a couple of games in 2015 due to injuries but I really liked his effort this year when he stepped up. I would imagine he is extremely coachable and the type of bloke you want to have around the club so I expect he'll be given every chance so as long as he keeps on improving he'll be OK.

An off-season on the weights would be a good idea too as for mine he still looks a bit light for the rigours of senior footy but ideally you'd see him on the HFF, maybe as Heeney moves into the midfield

Rose needs to improve set shots for goal. I reckon he lost his spot with 3 set misses in one game Was it the Dogs at the SCG.
