We've been linked in a Cal Twomey article to another South Aussie - Jordan Houlahan. I'd be happy with him at pick 33. He looks like another Will Hayward but with some potential to be involved more in the midfield/wing.

Houlahan would be the sort of player that would be in the mix at pick 33. He takes a strong mark. He'll probably go somewhere from 25-35. The WCE have picks 21, 26 and 32; there are a few WA players that are in the mix at those picks and I wonder how many the Eagles will go for. It could determine whether some other decent players slide to our pick.

Last year's draft had a lot of surprises once we got into the mid 20s and I would expect the same this year. I think KB will someone good.

Please forgive me my slowness, but I just want to understand how the list gets made up. The Swans have lost eight players through delisting, trade, and retirement. Of those, six were senior players. So we promote Melican, O'Riordan and Fox(?) to Senior List, recruit three in the ND, and then recruit five in the rookie draft? Is that the picture?

It is five senior players lost; BJ, Talia, Leonardis and AJ delisted plus Laidler retired. They will be replaced by three draftees plus Melican and O'Riordan elevated. From the rookie list we have in addition to Melican and O'Riordan, we have lost Murray traded, Edwards retired and Fisher delisted. We actually can have up to six rookies drafted with three cat A vacancies and three cat B vacancies but would be looking at drafting two Cat A rookies and prelisting three Cat B rookies to have the same team structure as this year. Possibly we might take only two Cat B rookies as if either AJ or Fisher are redrafted they would be Cat A. All this assumes that remaining rookies Ronke, Fox and Pink get another contract for a year.

Great, thanks. I had mistakenly thought that Edwards was on Senior List, but he was of course a mature age rookie.

We run a senior list of the minimum 38 whereas most other clubs have the maximum 40. That allows us to have 6 Cat A rookies, clubs on 40 seniors only 4 Cat A rookies.

Rookie list has been a gold mine for us. At one stage of the year all six backs had come off the rookie list, Rampe, Grundy, Smith, Lloyd, Melican, Newman! No club does it better :-)

I didn't doubt ugg. I was merely curious about his source.

Still no announcement from the club? Must be waiting for a slow news day LOL!

What about giving Hamish Brayshaw a rookie shot (if he's still available)? Mentally tough, good pedigree and his best is very good.

Even trickier might be in the unlikely event that Andrew gets to pick 14. Take him? Not what we need necessarily but best available?

Good idea on both accounts. I would take Hamish as rookie for sure if we were satisfied that his foot problems are well and truly over. Those lisfrancs are really debilitating. He's played some good football this year. Collingwood would probably offer a 1st round pick for him in a couple of years.

Andrew would be too good to pass up at pick 14. He's actually pretty quick, even if not in the same category as some others being considered at this pick. He just has all the makings of a solid AFL midfielder. But the chances of him getting to pick 14 are very slim. I don't think he'll get paste the Saints pick 8.

Keen on O'Brien as our first pick if arranging a session in a Qantas flight simulator is an indication of keenness! Mentioned in an article on the AFL website this morning. Happy if he slips to us at 14.

This is big news for our main rival:

Giants list manager departs, set to join Suns - AFL.com.au

Interesting comment on the go-home factor too. The odds are stacked against the frontier clubs at the moment. The academies don' make up for it either.

Not sure if this got posted earlier, Knightmare's Phantom draft, he's is usually fairly close, has Hunter Clark going to WCE at pick 13, he's another that would suit us.

                              14 Sydney - Lochie O'Brien
                              Height, Weight: 184cm, 75kg
Summary Profile: Arguably the best kick in the draft and this year's most damaging outside player. Line-breaker who if not for niggles that limited his output, may have been a top five draft selection.

On the matter of GWS recruiter bailing, the relevant comment for those that can't be bothered looking at the article, from Scott Clayton - "Every year, we at Gold Coast speak to would-be draftees and they say to us: 'You can draft me but I'll be coming back (to their home state) after two years'," Clayton told ESPN.

"It's like bloody Play School, it's so child-like that these young men who want to be part of a national competition can dictate the state they play in."

Reckon the AFL have to address this issue or Qld may struggle to get off the bottom of the table.

The QLD clubs need to fix their issues on field and off field if they want to keep players. The swans don't seem to have a problem keeping young players. Florent and Hayward extended their contracts in their first year. We must be doing something right ????.
