I can see what we have done..2 good kicks, two runners to help Ollie and will.
My only concern....not big ball winners.... Rowan can be anything if we give him the ball. Are these two the same.
I imagine some of our ressies like orioden, Dawson, Fisher etc, will help get the balls to these guys.
Winning your own ball especially in the twos will get you noticed.
Overall we need speed and direction, toughness will be a given if you are to be bloodedComment

I think we should be very pleased with our picks, especially since our draft position wasn't particularly good. There were some good players on the board when we took Mathew Ling: Higgins, Fogarty and Richards to name a few, but we went with Ling, so have to feel that our draft experts feel very strongly about him. They it well under wraps as we.
Stoddard was rated by many to go in the early 20s, in some cases earlier than Ling. We picked up 2 very quick and evasive players with good kicking skills and vision, something we all feel we need more of.
I think the Tom McCartin call is that we see a lot of potential in him. He will be a project player, but we don't need him playing senior footy for next few years. I'm sure we put a lot of work into this pick. It was the one pick that we had in fact been linked to. Geelong were also supposedly interested.Comment

I wanted Houlahan but Stoddart is a steal for pick 54. It goes to show how unpredictable this draft was for the "expert" phantom drafters.
Chris Doerre AKA Knightmare had Stoddart picked at 21, McCartin at 23, and Ling at 29. Twomey had them at 21, 23, and 30. Ling may have been a stretch according to these junior watchers but Stoddart and McCartin are steals. Of course, only time will tell how successful this draft is but it is always nice to speculate.Comment

Twomey's Phantom Draft had Stoddart at pick 21, my bolding
RYLEY STODDART
POS: Half-back
Ht 183cm Wt 73kg DOB 15/10/99
From Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro
The Eagles have been linked to Stoddart as a player who can come onto their list and bring some more run, drive and excitement through from defence. In time he will likely be able to spend some more minutes in the midfield and on a wing, but Stoddart will need to lift his possession rate before that happens. For now, though, his lovely ball use and good temperament make him a good option in the second round.
Also, Geelong Advertiser did an article recently on Ling and has a pic of him sitting at his desk I assume in his bedroom, on the wall a signed framed Swans guernsey so he's one of us, must be stoked!Last edited by 707; 24 November 2017, 08:46 PM.Comment

Happy with the boys we drafted. McCartin to develop. According to the commentators on SEN Stoddart is a player who was touted to be taken pre 30 so a good pick up. Ling seems to have been one out of left field and apparently not expected to go that high. Then again if I remember rightly George Hewett and Dean Towers were shock selections so early in the draft.
I still can't believe we took Jed Lamb before Luke Parker. I mean Parker has played in a premiership, is a vice captain and has won the Skilton medal twice. Lamb has deserted the ship, flogged off GWS for Carlton and done sweet bugger all because he's a lazy bugger. we did well in 2012 to pick Towers. Marsh & Membrey and then rookie Lloyd, Rampe, Robinson & Naismith with Richards & BJ. The only real failure was Matty Dick who never played a game for us.Comment

Looking at the draft profiles from several reputable sources I'm very happy with who we've taken, in fact they are looking like steals.
Pick 14 & 53 are 40 picks apart but we got two players rated pre draft as similar positioning in the draft. So we've got two very quick, very good ball users who are good decision makers, sound like what we need? These two are added to Florent and Hayward who have similar attributes. 2020 on the look of the team could be transformed. Guys running quickly off half back hitting Buddy on the chest - wowee BT!
McCartin, missed last year of footy so started behind, played this year as one of the youngest players in U18s, is a very athletic, currently 193cm KPF who looks like he will fill out into an imposing build. Next year still has to complete year 12. We're obviously taking a long term approach which is fine, probably come up in school holidays to train and play like Hanners did in 2009. Will be learning off two of the best KPF in history.
These were three very good selections with an eye to the medium term, kind of thing you can do when you have an already strong list.Comment

It's hard to question the Ling selection. We know we were interested in both Lachlan Fogarty and Jack Higgins, and were linked to Ed Richards as well. Longmire even visited Fogarty and Higgins in Melbourne a couple of days ago. So why did we choose Ling instead of these 3 more highly regarded players? Obviously we rated Ling the better prospect and I think that's saying something. Higgins especially had a solid consistent season. It's hard to say why he slipped so far.
Hope we take Jordan Butts in the rookie draft.Last edited by Ludwig; 24 November 2017, 09:26 PM.Comment
