Changes for round 1 - Syd vs Port

I know people have been discussing the likely best 22 for 2017 already but that kind assumes most are fit. I thought it may be interesting to take the evolutionary approach from the GF team that we do during the season for our round 1 team.

    So here are my changes.

OUT: McGlynn (retired), Papley (injured), Richards (delisted), Mitchell (traded), Laidler (injured)

IN: Robinson, Reid, Marsh, Allir, Newman

As you can see the biggest deficit is forward. So I think Robbo will play forward along with heeney and jack to provide support to the talls. It has been hinted that Mills will play a bit more in the mids to cover the loss of Mitchell. I think Jones will also push into the mids and do some of that. Bringing Marsh in allows him to play across half back as well as through the mids as he has done at neafl and his tank should be developed enough to do so. Foote will also be an option for that role and I think will push hard early in the season. That allows us to bring in Newman and Allir to cover those defenders above that I think will push up into the mids.

    What do people think?

When you look at it like that we look a bit weaker but I think we'll be fine. All a bit hard to predict at this stage though.

Reid and Aliir are both massively better than the guys they replace (Richards and Laidler) and I think you're right that Harry will play but I reckon perhaps Marsh OR Newman. That leaves a bolter and I'd say it's either Florent or Edwards.

    Can't wait for next Friday

Naismith recovering from shoulder surgery so Darcy Cameron may get a gig.

I'm excited by Newman and O'Riordan as HBF and noticed both were mentioned in Horse's presser this week. Doubt we'd debut both in the same match but then again we've been very adventurous with debutants recently. Newman is a mature player so whilst a debutant he is experienced.

Reid and Aliir are certain ins, after that it will be selected on preseason form, much like Papley was last year.

Looking forward to the RWO'ers reports on next Friday's practice match, so many players that we are hoping will step up and put themselves in the R1 frame.

        O'riorden excites me too.
I'm think we would go for sinclair if his knee is ok over Cameron in round one but you never know.

Suspect Aliir won't be available for round 1. In the few training sessions I've dropped by to watch, he's only very recently been seen out on the track at all, and then running pretty slowly and for not very long.

Besides Newman and Aliir, I think Talia and COR will push ahead of Marsh in defence. We have lots of variations there with McVeigh, Lloyd, Jones and Mills in the picture as well, so hard to say how well will structure up in round 1.

We also have many options to play with in the forward line during Papley's absence. Cunningham is likely choice. Rose is another. BJ could be given a go if he has a good pre season. There is also Florent and Sam Fisher, who both seem to be starting well. KJ may move forward and open space for Heeney and Mills in the midfield.

Dawson is also starting well this season and has plenty of talent. He could also come under consideration if he stars in the practice matches.

It will be interesting to see the relative positions of Robinson and Foote as backup midfielders.

We just resigned Towers for another 2 years. I don't think it was just to have him play NEAFL games. I've been critical of him, but if he can learn to tackle and apply defensive pressure, he has a lot going for him in other areas of his game.

I haven't seen a lot in Foote that excites me but he does seem to be one of Horse's pets, all coaches have them.

COR is a lock to play senior footy for me this year, he could be a brute, just so aggressive and very skilful given his experience but I doubt it will be round 1.

I'd like to see BJ get a gig but can't see it happening.

Towers is the wildcard for me. That guy has the potential to be a matchwinner, he's shown that, and apparently he trains the house down but he just lacks self belief. I thought he would take the step last season and in the end he was probably lucky to be retained. But I think he can give the forward line a huge point of difference if he can get his head right.

Dawson's problem is that he doesn't seem to get enough of the footy. At NEAFL he is a bit of a flat track bully and he really needs to increase his stats because he won't get those easy possessions at AFL level. He has a peach of a left foot but that isn't enough I am afraid.

The only one of our draftees I think will get regular senior footy this year is Florent but I rate the others very highly, I just think they need a season in our system first

For me we need to add a player or two that can play on the wing and or HBF and counter attack our transitions. I truly believe we need this flexibility in our game plan to beat the Dogs and or GWS in the finals series

This play or two may need a lot of game time in snrs to be ready comes finals.....I believe they need to get in there at the beginning of the season

if the below players and are injured or delisted the following will replace for Rd 1 I believe

                  1. Talia for AA

                  2. Edwards for laidler - I actually suspected that Edwards may get the spot of the bench for laidler anyway ie only 3 talls in the backline with a rotation of Edwards, Macca, smith, mills, jones as smalls....gws and Bulldogs played with shorter back lines successfully and rampe is third tall

                  3. Robbo for paps - Robbo and kizza sharing the midfield / forward line

                  4. Foote for Mitchell -

                  5. Reid for X

                  6. Florent in for Mcglynn - Big call but the kid is all class

I think that's quite possible. Depends how Naismith shoulder is and how sinclairs knee is

I think you're wrong about Dawson. He's an excellent contested mark and does win the footy when played through the midfield. But he does give the impression that he's just floating around the ground. This is because he copied his running style after Tom Derickx. This may not be curable. It will be something to keep and eye on this season.

Sinclair coming back from a knee, Cameron more likely for R1.

KJ on Foxsports, "young guys coming through like Heeney, Zac Jones & Mills that I want to see transition into the midfield" or something like that. Mentioned Jones second in that list so looks like some of us will get our wish and see Jones become a mid. Those three bring a different look to our midfield, probably why we let Mitchell go.

KJ talked about playing forward more.

I doubt that we will see 3 debutants in round 1 like we did last year.

Other than that so much depends on how the team weathers the warm up games.

Losing Reid in the intra-club last year lead to a string of injuries and no games. McGlynn's absence gave Papley the opportunity he seized. Talia came in for Ted and we saw a glimpse of something that was very interesting but short lived as well. McVeigh was also injured and made way for Hewitt. Whilst Mills was a player with an enormous reputation who was replacing the loss of Shaw. It could be argued that Robinson was there for Goodes who was also absent prematurely.

I like the argument of looking at last year's last team.

I would like to see Allir in the team for Laidler and I'm confident he'll be fit. He ran strongly at the last training I watched but he will need match conditioning if hopes to play in the opening round. If not him then it will be Marsh or Talia, depending on whether the selectors believe we need another tall or a running defender.

I'm sure Naismith and Franklin will be ready although Naismith is notoriously injury prone and with the recent changes is a critical player this year. Do not have the confidence in Sinclair to allow us any advantage under the new rules.

I was very impressed by the change in Rose's body shape. He has bulked up and looks much less of a youngster and much more of Jude Bolton type. He may get the Papley role, if fully fit, although Cunningham has the defensive pressure skills now to make it work.

Another one under a fitness cloud was Towers. If fit he deserves to be considered with Reid, Tippett and Franklin as a fourth tall with his pace, he should be dominant. I worry about his decision making, his disposal and his tackling pressure but ...
