How about you assess his game on merits? Maybe criticise him when he's poor and possibly even praise some good play?

For instance, I didnt think Towers should have come back. Has all the attributes to succeed but is pretty soft and makes horrific decisions under pressure. He's done enough to get picked again, (we didnt learn anything about his decision making under pressure against the lions) but he had a good game in a different role.

    It isnt that hard.

Either way we dont want to become Tigers or the Demons where he send out the veterans to pasture at the first sign theyre slowing down as they can teach and direct the next generation of players. We already have a young team. Mcveigh isnt the player he was a few years ago, but like Smith and Grundy have more to offer than just stats.
I agree with your arguments, and Barry has been too harsh on Macca, which obscures some of the valid points he has made about him.

We shouldn't jump to put the veterans out to pasture, but we have to strike the right balance and not wait too long either. There have been plenty of threads about what a pity it was to lose players like Biggs and Membrey for lack of opportunity. We can't hold back the careers of talented young players either, or they will be out the door and then the vets will retire and the young guns will have gone to other clubs.

Although Longmire doesn't give away a lot in his press conferences, he does say enough that shows he is aware of the necessity to find this right balance. Most of the veterans that have come under scrutiny play in the backline, which is an area that needs fixing. We are fortunate to have a fair number of young players coming through as alternatives to what we've been going with the past few years. It's hard to say the direction we should go in right now, but the next few weeks should paint a clearer picture.

Marsh has just about solidified his spot in the backline, although may come under pressure when Rampe returns. I think he's shown he's more than good enough to play at senior level. Aliir and Newman are the other 2 that should find their way into the side on a regular basis. Some room will have to be made.

I don't believe Rohan should be given a gig straight back in the seniors when Towers played his role significantly better than him. I'd like to see him tried on the ball/at half back in NEAFL to give him a chance to get a bit more ball again and regain confidence.

Jack will likely come in for Florent, although again I'd like to see him perform at NEAFL level first, his form this year to date should see his gold pass revoked.

If Tippet is fit I suspect they'll drop Naismith for him as Sinclair offers more forward, again I think he needs kick up the bum and a game in the NEAFL might just do that.

Newman unlucky, can't fit him back in.

If past history is anything to go by (Talia, Morton, Davis), Allir is going to be spending a fair bit more time at NEAFL level before getting another opportunity at senior level

I doubt anyone else would be under serious consideration
      1. Jack is not yet fit and is a week away at least and probably needs a reserves game. Ramps will train this week but not available until at least next week so that should throw the cat among the pigeons. spots in the team are going to be hard to get.

      2. Rohan and Tippett need to play reserves. towers was good last week and so was Sinkas. It was Naismith's first game back so please stop putting him out for @@@@s sake. Give him time as he is the best first ruck we have as Tip is way out of form.

This week they probably won't change the team much, if at all. The players who are available and didn't play last week need to get form in the reserves. Robbo is available apparently but will not be rushed back due to the type of injury. They are looking at a game two weeks time for him, probably reserves.

All this I learnt from Horse's presser and Harley's injury report.

Really, Toby? You're a highly trained athlete, with excellent hand eye coordination: nobody believes that your aim is that bad.
The other thing is there were two actions. He stops and you can actually see his the expression on his face change and then he punches him in the gob from behind. This was a premeditated act. He actually thought about it and then punched. It is clear on the replay that is what he did. Funny even the umpire says this; 'You lined him up Toby and this has been coming for a few weeks now. Incidents like this'.

No AFL didn't they had him at 18th behind Kennedy on 17 on the stats sheet. Kennedy got a rating of 58 & Macca 55

That's Dream Team not Super Coach (aka Champion Data Ranking Points). Dream Team points aren't a great indicator of a player's influence on the game.

Anyone heard anything about AJ? Must be getting close to NAFL. Is there a separate thread on this?

A little harsh. Didn't Jones gives him a loopy handball that put him under all sorts of pressure. Or was it the other way round?

I agree with your ambivalence I don't get the unabashed and unwarranted love for Gary on this site. For a number 6 draft pick he hasn't delivered what we hoped for. And before I get shot down with howls of protest yes I know he has been injured and I admire him coming back from them , but compare his career stats with perennial whipping boy Dean Towers.

Gary Rohan and Dean Towers AFL Stats Comparison
Geez that's a sobering comparison. Like the footballing version of the poggendorff illusion. Perhaps it's because footywire is missing the 'super clanger' category, which Towers would own.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

No to be fair they don't break the clangers down into category's just a simple total figure and career average. Did you happen to notice what the actual figures were ?
I just wanted to provide some balance to temper the unjustified and unrealistic expectations that Gary seems to bring out on this forum.

I love Gaz but there's no way in the world that Towers should make way for him this week.

Towers was great on the weekend and deserves an extended run in the seniors. Gazs last half of uninjured football produced 1 kick, and he wasn't much better in the games prior

10 disposals from Gaz can still have a real impact on a game (a la Cyril, not that I'm comparing them). Frustrating that he can't get a good run at it.

Dean needs to work on having an impact in games.

We've had a lot of players come straight back into seniors returning from injury, we don't need another one. I hope they give Gaz a run in the 2's.
