Take it for what you will (and I normally discard information from this source) but David King talked On The Couch, either this week or last, about how Essendon were ranked amongst the lowest of the contenders for forward pressure, and still rely a lot of rebound from defence.
High inside 50 numbers generally arise where teams get repeat inside 50 entries- ie as soon as it comes out, it goes straight back in. So a low inside 50 count is consistent with an observation that a team isn't great at forward pressure.
