I liken the Ellis hit on Whitfield to the one by Zak Jones against Hannan. Ellis does not bump, he braces for contact when contesting the ball.

Disagree. He could have tackled, instead he turned his shoulder and ran past Whitfield only collecting his head. He's gone for sure imo.

Zak's one he was looking to make contact with the shoulder to win the footy, but was clumsy and got the head. He wasn't running through an opponent that already had the ball.

He was contesting the ball. Whitfield just laid his hands on the ball when contact is made. Ellis, who has his hands out to take the ball, braces for impact at that moment (and Whitfield is caught high) - he does not deliberately bump.

The review of the Jones decision is similar:

?The ball was loose with both players coming to the contest. Jones runs through the line of the ball and seeks to hit or tap the ball with his right hand to his advantage, making contact with the ball. At the same moment, he braces for contact with Hannan and high contact is made to the Melbourne player.

It was the view of the panel that Jones was contesting the ball and no further action was taken.?

That reminds me. I must write a letter of apology to the Swans MAnagement. I was very angry after the Geelong game but have witnessed the madness around Melbourne for the Yellow and BLack, I am so happy that we are not the evil Other half that may stop the fairytale like we were last year. The mental damage to the players would last for the Next ten years. Brilliant strategic move by the Swans. Afl premiers over the Next three years is a definite possibility now. Bring on 2018!

            Hannebery hit on Hurley
            Cotchin hit on Shiel

Comparing the two incidents; the main verdict will most likely be based on whether it was a brace v bump.

Hannebery is protecting his body and bracing himself by keeping his feet and shifting to the side but unfortunately Hurley has left himself completely vulnerable.

Cotchin's I'd consider as a bump as he cannons in to Shiel. He is going in for the hard ball or playing on edge and launches off the ground. Although the intent would have been to go hard and body out Shiel (which would have been fair game), he hits him high and has to pay for that gamble.

AFL will instruct MRP via smoke signals that it was an accidental head clash, nothing more, clear to play.
No way known will they allow their 2017 love team to lose their captain for the Granny.
Tiger fans would go berko and they actually need to win or lose this Granny with their full team.
They would have won even if Shiel was able to play out the game.

They really do look quite similar. But maybe that just means that the MRP got it wrong earlier in the year and Hannebery should have been suspended (or they both get off). Hannebery looks to go past the ball by an extra two feet to make contact. From memory, I think I told my son that he was going to have a ?time out? for a couple of weeks after that incident.

I don't think Hanners "went past the ball" to make contact deliberately. Moreso he positioned his body so that it was balanced enough to help him take possession. In these cases the MRP tends to focus on whether the ball was genuinely in contest, and where the eyes of the player were - ie does he have his eye on the ball or on the opponent. But watching the Hanners incident again does nothing to make me change my mind that Cotchin will be fine for this incident.

I definitely agree with Hotpotato's suggestion that, for their sanity, Richmond fans need to win or lose the GF with their best team. Actually, that's for everyone's sanity. If they win but Cotchin doesn't play, we'll get a repeat of the "Bob" situation from last year (albeit different reasons for missing the game). And just imagine if they lose a close game without him. Actually don't imagine. Even just imagining is painful enough.

My considered opinion is that Cotchin will play, but him and Martin will both go for the same ball and knock each other out in the first quarter. After that, it descends into a strange, walking nightmare for the Richmond faithful.

Know I'm bit of a spoil sport on this but Richmond should have to confront all the pressure of playing in the opponent's home town on their home ground. Still irks me greatly.

If cotchin gets off, and Richmond win, it's another contrived victorian fairytale.

                        This comp has no integrity.

They may not even get onto the field on Saturday. Martin contracting a serious infection at the tattoo shop whilst getting yet another

Cotchin cleared. Ellis not sighted and no mention of Cotchins hit on Hopper. That's me done with the national game. For to long now the AFL look at the result they want and work backwards. Old saying this is the straw that broke the camels back. I'll be cancelling everything I subscribe to and membership In regards to the national game. Thank you for having me here and I've enjoyed all your company n I hope you all enjoy Richmonds win on Saturday. Cheers
