Just look at the St Kilda game and yes they attempted the short game also, but could not handle our pressure. People are joking talking about finals this year. If one of the smartest footballers (alas Paul Roos) said on radio " Every side knows that Sydney's best is very good" But if they pull out 10 straight wins and make finals, he believes there will be no gas left in the tank. Time for Darcy Cameron's debut!!!

Your defence starts with not giving the ball to the opposition

Your alluding to that your defence starts when u don't have the ball ?

That's wrong and just about every team sport in the world knows that when u have the ball that is ur best way to stop the opposition scoring

That is the benefit of using uncontested when appropriate to maintain possession

My whole arguement is that using "when appropriate" uncontested football as ur defence to slow the momentum of the opposition is a very sound way to play football. Many teams have been flexible with this style of play and or using it in parts of the game when needed

We don't appreciate this enough at the swans and I feel as we are not seeing the flexibility on a weekend of adapting to the contest before us

I also want to restate I love contested football

I love that we have been awesome at getting the most out of this style and it is a style needed for finals as you said but hawthorn have shown time after time u can use both in a single game to win finals

I also think it is an error of strategy to not think that every team is trying to evolve their styles of football to create a better mouse trap

Little things that we might not always notice at first glance start to become patterns for us to all see

Ie Gws and the Dogs have invested heavily in making sure they have brilliant counter attack players from their back line and it works

We have been behind the times on this and it shows as we have minimal flexibility in this area and no greater example was when Lloyd went down our "go to guy" for our the backline transitions and then the hawks pinned us down
My observation of how we play is that we are prepared to let the opposition get the ball into their forward line but we get the cavalry back to limit scoring.

Under Roos we played "tempo" footy. Under Eade we flooded back.

I agree we should limit the opposition to their ball use. Some times we do sometimes we don't. It all depends on the cattle you have on how your defensive mechanism works.

I was privileged to hear Alan Jeans speak to a small group of people. His mantra was; "There are 3 phases to a game, we have the ball, they have the ball and ball is in dispute. When we have it we use to our advantage with good skills, when they have it we attempt to limit their use and effectiveness by pressure and when it is in dispute we apply as much pressure so we get possession." That was as simple as it was and it worked. I reckon that is how we play but it doesn't mean it works against all teams. Yes Hawthorn seem to get us most times. And you know what; in past decades they were one mob both South and Swans had trouble beating.

Do we change how we play them? I agree with you; we need to change something up to beat them. But how many of our games with them are close. A lot of them, so we may only have to change a few things. We were unlucky last week to lose 2 players by half way through the second quarter, otherwise we would have nailed them and not be having this discussion.

      Cheers

This is paradise even if we miss out this year. Younger generation spoilt and need to cop a bit of pain to appreciate how good the club has been. Young list looks ok for the future. Patience needed- we've had no luck this year. Longer lay off after this season might do us world of good. Port Power seems to have benefitted and a lot of our senior players have been exceptional for a long time.

AG, it might make you feel better to read that Kevin Bartlett said that Hawthorn kick the ball around without being hindered and he can't understand why Sydney let them get away with it. (Not quite verbatim but words to that effect)
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Can Longmire coach? It appears that Hinkley at least knews how to coach against Hawthorn with a list inferior to Longmire.

              I agree 100%

Horse does not have the brains to coach a team against the Hawks. You have to deny them the ball. They are hopeless and yet last week we were 10 mtrs behind them all night.

Time to give it up Horse.

Pretty embarrassing for Sydney's methodology playing the Hawks .

Hawks coming off 2 6 day breaks, like us last week, appear to have no energy or run. Not sure methodology is relevant.

I believe tactics are the reason why Port have killed them. Who sets the tactics ????

I've not been sure what to think about us losing to Hawthorn last week, but this Port performance is pretty damning for the Swans coaches.

I said a few weeks back I hope we aren't the Port of 2017. They were a one trick pony. Once other teams worked out how to beat them it took them a couple of very disappointing years in the wilderness to adapt. Albeit with the same head coach they've come back and look like they might be a contender.

Its the worst week for a bye because the talk of trading Tippett and firing Longmire will go on for at least another week!

Why? Port are a finals bound team. We are not. Dilute your expectations of a bottom team.

Lack of energy from 6 day breaks kicks in in the second half of the match, not zero goals for first half.

I think a melbourne team having to travel interstate twice in a row is the killer. How dare the AFL put a ridiculas travel burden on a melbourne team!

"Clarkson was reluctant to blame fatigue for the result but said back-to-back road trips off consecutive six-day breaks was tough.

"You don't usually get dealt that sort of blow in the course of a home and away fixture," Clarkson said.

"Every club puts in their request and I reckon there's not a club in the competition that would want two interstaters in a row. You've just got to deal with what you (get dealt)."
