Smacks of Hanners and the Swans pumping up Hanner's worth.
Swans: "He's a required player who will get back to his best"|
Hanners: "I wanna stay... unless you offer me a stupid amount"

win/win for the club and Hanners if it comes off.

      It's an interesting conundrum:

If the Swans think he's going to get back to his AA best, they should keep him. There can't be too many AA level players we could trade in to replace him
But if they don't, they should trade him, while pretending he's going to get back to his best.

For us outside the club, it's going to look identical. Whatever they think, they'll say, as you point out CTS, he's a required player who will get back to his best.

It's what happens that will tell the story: if they let him go, that means they don't believe he's going to get back to 2016 form.

Let's hope he can have a few good games before the seasons over.

A Hannebery trade only makes sense if the Swans already have a free agency deal virtually wrapped up and they need to find the salary cap space to do it. Looking down the list of free agents, only Gaff and Dahlhaus wouldn't leave the Swans worse off. Trading Hanners to make room for a Darcy Moore seems crazy and he's not even a free agent.

If we can get pick 5 in the draft we are likely to get another highly talented midfielder in either Izak Rankine or Bailey Smith. I wouldn't be interested in a KPP, but at least one of the King brothers is also likely to available if that's what KB is after.

That's the only scenario where we would be well ahead of not doing the trade.

Let's get this clear, St.Kilda aren't going to be sold a shonky deal, they will do their medical due diligence. Also, we wouldn't be party to pulling the wool over another clubs eyes, would stain your trading reputation for a very long time.

If both parties thought Hanners will return to AA form, we are talking about a 27yo and pick 4 in a super draft may just be too much to pay. I'm thinking there'll be a third party involved being Crows who are desperate by all reports to get to the pointy end of the draft. So it could be Saints swapping pick 4 for Crows picks 8 & 14?, one of those pick 14 comes to us.

Reckon Hanners is only released if we have a very good FA in the bag, like Gaff who will now want to escape into public anonymity in Sydney.

Let’s not forget the rules of contracts have been rubbished the past few years . It may not be a Free agent we are chasing , it could be a player under contract . Hopefully we are using our imagination..

Yes a Gaff deal to Sydney suddenly might be attractive to him given the terrible events of this past week.

Yep. They’d probably need to be out of contract, but not a FA.

Were this to be true, we’d have to believe the Hanners trade would cover the trade for his replacement ???

Here is the latest trade whispering news from Roar. They reckon St Kilda is confident of landing Hannebery. Also of note is Nth Melb offering Jarryd Polec $3.5million 5 year deal, Essendon chasing Dayne Beams, Luke Hodge trying to entice Cryil Rioli out of retirement to Brisbane, Tim Kelly being lured back to WA, Darcy Moore to Swans could already be a done deal & Jake Lloyd looking for bigger coin than what the Swans have tabled so far.

A few of those have already been put to bed, looks like a rehash old recent rumours that are peddled by low grade journos. Cyril is not returning to AFL with anyone, Essendon is not after Beams and don't have picks or players to get it done, Tim Kelly will only be going if something very good comes back from WCE or Freo and they haven't got much, can't see us chasing crock Moore who broke down yet again in front of our eyes, we don't have cap or picks, Polec is just chasing more $ from Port and using LOLNorf as the stalking horse as all players do!

Of concern to us is the dilution of points we need for Blakey. our first will be pushed out by Lynch compo and our others by Gaff if he goes and the likelihood of PP after first round to GC & Carlton. Has the potential to rob us of 150 much needed points.

I'm hopeful we've got a FA on our radar to ease the pain.

Mick Malthouse hasn’t held back saying Saints shouldn’t go near Hanners as his body is “gone”

                        Category: | Herald Sun

“LEGENDARY coach Michael Malthouse has launched a withering attack on St Kilda’s recruiting philosophies, saying the club’s interest in Sydney midfielder Dan Hannebery is misguided.”

“He said the talk of St Kilda offering Hannebery a long-term deal at this point in his 204-game career was silly.

“His body is gone,” Malthouse said on ABC radio.

“He is an old 27-year-old. He would be one of the last players I would pick.

“If they (St Kilda) are talking these four and five-year (contracts) it is a ridiculous amount of years for a player whose body is struggling to get through this year.”

“His pace is gone,” Matlhouse said.

“Once your pace goes you are gone, and he never had a great deal of it in the first place, so when you start to lose what you had, you are in real trouble.”

What an idiot. Firstly, he would have no idea what is happening with Hanners injuries. Secondly, Hanners never had pace anyway.
