Liz, i don’t agree, for once.

We have a hole in our midfield that it’s unclear how we’ll fill effectively.

We could turn over a huge number of players from our list and if we do lose Hanners, Jack, Macca, Grundy, Rohan, Llooyydd, go into 2019 with a very young side.

I don’t see that side being in a position to challenge for a couple of years without the injection of experience via trade / FA. Swans haven’t needed to be active players for years.

Thought the same when I heard Kingy made that comment. However I maintain Hanner's is worth 2 x 1st round picks going by Carlton receiving the same for Gibbs who was also still contracted (10 & 16), so Billiings & a early 2nd rounder is a minimum in my books. I can see Billings develop into a effective midfielder under our system. St. Kilda must think Hanners will return to AA form to offer him 5 year contract @ $800k (presumably). Interesting both Kingy & Terry Wallace thought St.Kilda going after Hanners isn't the right strategy for them. I'm so hoping Hanners stays & love to see him get to playing his 300th in Red & White!

I don’t disagree that we have a whole in our list, particularly in the midfield, though I don’t think it’s as bad or as hard to fix as some others might.

My observation was aimed at the article, which does nothing other than stating the obvious.

If a Hanners deal is predicated on the Swans wanting to do it (based on a belief his best is behind him) then our #1 priority will be getting his salary out of our salary cap.

And bringing in a hardened player rather than a draftee to replace him. So Billings and a pick upgrade might be ideal for us if we think we can turn Billings around.

But that’s a lot of ifs

Geez watching the North v Bulldogs game waiting for ours to start and I know it's an early call as we have seen very little of Ling this year, but I'm still pretty confident that the great Kinnear Beatson made a mistake in not picking Ed Richards instead of Ling. They are obviously similar type players who both played off half back in the U18's and offer what we were looking for. But I feel we got the wrong one.

Many will say give Ling a chance and obviously he will get that chance in the next couple of years on our list. But in the few games I've seen on youtube that Ling played in the NEAFL early on, I saw virtually nothing from him that made me think, geez we might have a player here in a couple of years! On the other hand, Richards continues to show those qualities, in the AFL no less, every week...

Yep looking like a pretty bad error, particularly when Ling was considered a reach at where he wAs tAken

I've enjoyed watching Richards as much as anyone, but can't we wait until Ling has had a chance to play before declaring this draft selection a mistake. He hurt his foot in the second half of the pre-season and tried to play with it, so I don't think his underwhelming NEAFL outings are representative of what he might have to offer.

We don't know whether Richards was even really considered by the club. A young player's ability or willingness to move interstate are important factors than the non-Vic clubs have to consider when drafting players. Maybe he was considered a flight risk? Who knows?

I'm happy to have a miss on Ling, and the jury is still out for a couple of seasons, and have snagged the youngest player in the AFL who if he was born two days later would be a top 10 pick this year - Tom McCartin!

I've never had it but from all reports, turf toe is not fun so I don't think you can really judge Ling on anything from this season. The good news is that he has probably spent a fair bit of time in the gym getting stronger and putting on some weight. This is something that normally can't be achieved in the first few seasons as they are too busy running 14+kms a game.

I agree. He is looking like a real steal isn’t he.

Has he signed a contract extension yet ? If not we need to prioritise that too

If there was a bookmark feature for posts on here, I'd love to use it for this one (so we can refer later). You may well be right in the long run, but as Liz validly points out, his 2018 season has basically proven a wipeout ever since that injury in pre-season. Lets see how he gets on fighting fit next season hopefully before we throw him on the dustbin. If every player was judged solely on their first season, a hell of a lot of the very best players in the game would never have got their chance at all.

Nobody is death riding Ling, hopefully he turns into a good player for us, but at the moment the Bulldogs have one in the bank with Richards, and we have an as yet unknown quantity. I know which position I'd rather be in
