Liz, that’s how I read it too. It obviously doesn’t say what we’ve offered him. I wonder if it was more than one year?

If he doesn’t decide by Friday what happens then?

Menzel would be awesome, really hope we can land him.

He adds a great extra and much needed dimension to our forward line.

        Sydney secures Menzel - sydneyswans.com.au

I'm starting to think positively about this trading period. Clarke and Thurlow seem ready to go. And now Menzel. Pick up Blakey and a couple of youngsters and I'm seeing good pressure for places in the team in 2019.

Opinions will vary on who has played had the best career thus far (noting that most of them are a way off their best) but I'm struggling to find ten players I'd pick ahead of Mills.

"Rubish" is a bit of an extreme reaction Liz dont you think?

At a quick glance I can see 10 or more players equal or better than Mills at this stage. Still early days, but a pick 3 shouldnt be still langishing as a half back flanker at this stage.

It looks like we've decided we want Menzel and probably have made him an offer. He has to weigh that up against whatever other offers have come his way including $$, length of contract, geographical/convenience/sentiment factors, and, importantly, the role the club envisages for him and the likelihood of him being best 22 at the relevant club. Other factors could include connections he has at the club, reputation of the club generally and of rehab/medical personnel in particular. Ironically, one of the players Menzel has some level of connection with is the now departed Alex Johnson.

Speaking of AJ, I wonder whether, as it is becoming increasingly likely he will not find himself on an AFL list next year, he will reconsider the offer to coach with us (and whether that offer stands).

1 year deal for Menzel. Much better get than Townsend.

Excellent news. He's what we need now.

Menzel on a one year deal is interesting as I understand that was the sticking point at Geelong. He wanted a longer deal. Possibly it has a trigger clause in it if he can play so many games etc.

I think the relationship with the Swans for Menzel would be with Stevie J not AJ and possibly with Harley and Gardiner as well. Happy with the news and now Townsend and Sutcliffe are off the radar.

I don't agree with your original statement "[Mills] hasnt shown anything to indicate hes a top 10 player yet, certainly not a 3." And I do think Mills deserved selection at pick 3, a selection that was vindicated when he won the Rising Star the following year. But I do agree with you, barry, that one could reasonably place 10 players ahead of him now (although I wouldn't). Here are some of the names that people might argue are ahead of Mills (including because they arguably have more upside in them): Oliver, Curnow, Hipwood, Hopper, Parish, Francis, Doedee, Burton, Weitering, Schache, Cameron, Weideman, McKay, Dunkley, Gresham. I repeat that I am not rating all these players ahead of Mills but I do think it's arguable and up for debate. Of course it will change again as the years unfold and I'm backing Mills to be top 5 when we look back at the 2015 draft in years to come.

Me to. But with his build and skill set (he's up against some key position players, and elite runners in there), he will need to get into the midfield and be our number 1 midfielder (kennedy-esque) to be worthy a top 3 pick. What are the chances ?

I'm beginning to regret that post. I think Mills is pretty clearly at least top 10 at this stage.

I think after the trade period etc, our first pick was 33. We used 33, 36, 37 and 43 to get him. He is definitely worth more than whatever those picks would have gotten us. So it's a bit different to saying if he is worthy of a top 3 pick or not, since we never actually had pick 3.

I was thinking the same. Wonder if Lloyd Perris has the job we bookmarked for AJ. If he doesn't come back with us hopefully gets a coaching role elsewhere

I’d say a trigger clause surely! Very excited he’s coming to Sydney
