I think Sinclair will fill the 2nd tall roll next year, either rotating with Cameron or playing predominately forward with Naismith rucking. We also have Reid, McCartain, Blakey, Dawson and Amartey who could all play tall in the forward line so I think the priority is to get guys who can rebound out of defense and distribute from midfield (inside and out). We have won games in the past with both Buddy and Reid out and the tallest option being Rohan, built on the back of midfield dominance and hard pressure up forward by our smalls.Comment

It was great to hear at the B&F that we finally have a new first class training facility close to the SCG. This will assist in recruitment going forward and should ensure that we keep up with the opposition. I've seen Essendon's facility and it's amazing so we needed to do this. Does anyone know when it will be ready for use? No mention on that in the PR releases.

Makes sense to strengthen bottom half of list with some added experience in preparation losing nearly 900 games of experience with the impending retirements of McVeigh, Grundy & Jack at end of next season. Hopefully these (potential) recruits can improve & become valuable players under our system, which we were famous for.
Still think we need to urgently recruit an A grade midfielder to replace Hannebery (assuming he'll get to Saints). Despite his past 2 seasons performances hampered by interrupted pre-seasons, I still class Hanners as an A grader overall. I rate Dom Tyson who I think can easily become an A grader who is linked to Essendon. I really wish there is a smidgeon of truth with that Jackson MacRae rumour even though it seems sooooo outlandish the Dogs would even consider being open to a trade with 4 years remaining on his contract.

+1. At least we'll have Blakey to play that role if necessary.Comment

So at this stage, players who are either likely, or at least a chance, of coming to the Swans are......
1) Duryea - 27 yrs (Hawks)
2) Clarke - 21 yrs(Kangas)
3) Vandenberg - 26 yrs (Demons)
4) Jonas - 27yrs(Power)
5) Perhaps a Saints player as part of the Hannebery trade
It's not a bad bunch of inexpensive players all in their prime, other than Clarke who has it all before him.
We certainly seem to have moved away (for now at least) from the big fish strategy, which has had a mixed result.Comment

One thing I noticed in his B&F address, Horse noted the uncertainty surrounding the trades of Rohan and Hannebery. However, he did not do the same for Newman. Possibly this could just be because Newman hasn't been around as long and doesn't have the same stature within the club. Or possibly it means that deal has been bedded down and is a surer thing than the other deals. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Hanners and Rohan are still contracted for another 3 and 2 years respectively, so if the club isn't able to trade them they will remain on the list and be back next year.Comment

The key difference is that Newman is out of contract and thus neither he nor the club have any ongoing obligation towards each other. Newman might have indicated to the club he intends to leave regardless of whether they are able to trade him to his preferred club. He's almost certainly shown enough that another club would pick him up late in the draft if it came to that.

Negotiations for Hanners and Gaz would have been in progress for a few weeks, and given our trading philosophy we're likely to send Nic to wherever he wants to go for little compensationComment

A couple of observations from the draft combine results:
* a guy called Ely Smith did well - both athletically (agility, jumping, yo-yo) and in the kicking test. Intriguingly he is a big, inside mid. Here's a profile from Knightmare/Chris Doerre: AFL Draft Chris Doerre Knightmare Contested midfielders on the rise. The profile is from May and said Smith was "on the rise" but at that stage Smith "projected as a late chance". You'd have to think his stocks have risen and he will now be drafted. But when?
* there is a player called Mosquito! Irving Mosquito no less.
Chris Doerre has also been brave enough to produce a phantom draft: AFL Draft First round phantom who goes where. It's worth is limited by the fact that picks will be traded extensively before the draft. Still it's interesting. He has Blakey sliding to pick 12. Walsh going pick 1 and Lukosius to Gold Coast at pick 2. Lukosius would be great for the Suns and what they need. On that point, I read somewhere recently that GC might then be inclined to use pick 3 to get Rozee, who is a good buddy of Lukosius, to increase the chance of retaining them both down the track. This strategy has been happening a little bit the past few years (especially by Brisbane and GC but also by us e.g. with McCartin and Ling last year) but we have not seen the fruits of it and whether it works. If it does work, I think it is worth the Suns taking that approach and reaching a little for Rozee (who is by all accounts a good player anyway). Helps Blakey slide further for us too!All opinions are not equal. Given what's been released to the media, it is extremely unlikely that any of those three will be with us next year
