I thought Hayward was quiet tonight but I?m loving how we are putting games into him and Olly.

I?d give Aliir a decent block of games to try and get his mojo back.

Rohan and Melican are obvious ins in the next few weeks but I?d also like us to give Dawson an opportunity when fit. That equates to an extended first team squad of 26 which is about right

Hope they're right! Would love them to feel "robbed!"

I was at the game and keeped an eye on Allir Allir and came to the conclusion that he will never make it as a AFL player. He plays way too loose and pulls out of the hard contest on nearly every chance he gets. He is a liability unfortunately as I did have high hopes for him but we should trade at the end of year if anyone would take him...

They can sook for as long as it takes for them to get bent over in a grand final.. just like i wont ever die happy till the hawks get thrashed in a grand final.

I thought the same on first viewing but on the replay i counted 14 steps so looked fine. Certainly not in the same league as the Jetta goal in the 2012 prelim!!!

Ok well I am willing to disagree on Allir. He only played a half in the NEAFL last week. Give him at least 2-3 weeks to warm up.

I think he can be an integral part of our side.

Allir's 2016 form was excellent, he seemed to understand the game pretty well. I saw him at Simmons Stadium that year when we beat Geelong and I was thinking we have a good one here and I think he will get back to that form...... but not in the forward line.

Just looked at the video of Florent?s goal. No way he ran too far - anyone saying that must have missed his early bounce.

Now Jetta in 2012 ...... but he was so brilliant the umps were too busy cheering along with the rest of us to count steps!

                      Roberts-Thompson .

Courageous win, although we didn't really play that well and probably stole it in end.

I think a key reason Allir was picked was to contest the long kick down the line out of defence - i.e. the second or third kick following a kick-in after a behind. Reid, Sinclair and Buddy tend to contest those (sometimes Rohan and Towers), and Aliir took Reid's role, particularly in the second half. I thought he did a good job contesting them - I don't think he conceded a contested mark in those contests and killed the ball in most of them.

I think most of us presumed Aliir was replacing Melican, but on reflection there was a tell in Longmire's interview at the beginning of the week. When he was asked who would replace Reid, he responded that Aliir was probably underdone. I thought it sounded a little strange at the time. They decided to go with him anyway - the leaping swingman, and I think it still turned out better than the alternatives. But yes, he's clearly rusty and needs games. It will be interesting to see whether he or Newman make way for Rohan next week, if he plays. Rohan is better than both in both roles.

I thought it was a toss-up between Parker and McVeigh for our best. Parker's late mis-kick late can surely be forgiven - he kept us in the game by being the most dominant inside midfielder on the night. He led us in clearances and contested possessions and kicked three goals to keep us in touch early.

McVeigh saved us several times, particularly late. He's playing his best footy for three years. Rampe and Grundy (in particular) probably played their best games of the year, with better footy to come.

Heeney was good again. I thought Towers was excellent - rucked well, broke away a couple of times, and of course took that excellent contested grab and converted it well in the last quarter.

We haven't hit the ground running this year - our wins have been scrappy, but hard fought. A lot of improvement to come.

Great game from Heeney, and although I'd be reluctant to go into a GF with Macca, he was good today.
Based on 2017 and the small sample of 2018, I'd be reluctant to go into a GF without him. He is habitually in our best 2-3 players. Why you wouldn't want him there is a mystery to me.

A lot of our guys were down on the day. It was about the worst game I can remember from JPK. Hayward followed a great game with a very quiet one, but it seems to happen with younger players.

Newman had a dreadful start to the game , but improved as the game went on. There were some times late in the game where he just seemed to stop running. I was disappointed with that.

As others have said, it seems a waste to have played Aliir as a forward when he's had limited preparation and almost exclusively as a defender. He looked all at sea and no idea what to do.

It was a strange game and hard to digest. I'll have to review the replay late in the week to try to get a feel for what went down. I'm happy for the win. The Bulldogs played excellent footy in the 1st quarter or so and deserved to have a big lead. I though we were going to overrun them in the 4th, but they had other ideas.

We need to improve a lot if we want to be serious flag contenders. Other sides can get a hold of us for long periods in the game where we just can't get the ball out of our defensive half of the ground.

So impressed we won that against the odds. Heeney is becoming Mr Fixit, I feel sorry for AA who was sacrificed to play an unfamiliar role for the team.

They played a very Hawthorn-like style against us and we countered it and won. Surely that?s a step forward?
