How did the AFL/VFL cope when Brisbane won their threepeat? I wasn't following back then so closely but can't imagine it went down well with the Mexicans south of the border. Can someone who remembers explain? What about when Adelaide won consecutive years 1997/8 - did that get alarm bells going too? Surely it isn't specific to only the Swans? Then again a lot of people in Melbourne (meaning no disrespect to our South supporters) do seem to have a grudge against Sydneysiders more than people from Adelaide or Brisbane (no doubt because they think we're shallow and up ourselves or somesuch).

Melbourne insularity and insecurity towards Sydney( I am a Melburnian by the way and have lived here all my life) Interesting perspective being an old South fan now barracking for Swans. Opens your eyes and gives you an independent look at Melbourne's attitude to Sydney. McGuire plays to this attitude and is a pure example of it. -
Can vouch the same Blood Fever being a South/Sydney supporter for over 50 years. I long had debates regarding this with my Melbourne mates, but they can't see it because that are too fixated with their Vic teams. Because of my rantings, they now dislike the Swans when they used to be their 2nd team!Melbourne insularity and insecurity towards Sydney( I am a Melburnian by the way and have lived here all my life) Interesting perspective being an old South fan now barracking for Swans. There's always been Melbourne/Sydney rivalry but post 2005, when everybody still loved us (everybody's 2nd team!), things have changed.....and the reasons are many and varied and accumulated to the point where we became seen as too strong, too good, a juggernaut and a tall poppy that needed trimming.......How did the AFL/VFL cope when Brisbane won their threepeat? I wasn't following back then so closely but can't imagine it went down well with the Mexicans south of the border. Can someone who remembers explain? What about when Adelaide won consecutive years 1997/8 - did that get alarm bells going too? Surely it isn't specific to only the Swans? It started with recruiting Tippett post premiership then recruiting Buddy, Fitzpatrick's crap about Swans/Cola, Vic journo's and Eddie who repeated Fitzpatrick's crap, Eddie Maguire's ongoing jealous crap, Vic journo's who repeat Maguire's crap, our ongoing success, Swans Academy, Eddie and Vic journo crap about Swans Academy, even Goodes becoming 'AOTY' (followed by Shane Warne's idiotic tweet), Goodes being so 'controversial', being a 'slider', being a 'stager' and having the 'audacity' to stand up to teenage racism, topped off with Gillon McLaughlin being an absolute puppet to these vested interests.......
It has become easy to put the boots into the Swans, almost a bit of a sport to some headline hunting Vic journo's and footy 'experts' and the league itself has pandered to these interests as well as mislead tribal and largely stupid 'heartland' fans and has ultimately also put the boots in.......to the point of cheating us out of a premiership.
Since late 2012 (Tippett), so much misconception and untruth about our club has been spread by agenda driven footy folk, the league and the tribal fans have swallowed it and the resulting scenario makes following our club in this league fraught with frustration, anxiety and suspicion.
If the rumours that the Swans are privately seething about 2016 and believe there is a conspiracy against them are indeed true, I wouldn't blame them one bit for thinking that way......I do.

Many people (ie McGuire and co) were livid because they had the living away from home allowance at the time. McGuire believing that 3 premierships was evidence that the arrangement was unbalanced, complained and as a result it was removed. As my memory serves me it was a similar situation to the angst against us.How did the AFL/VFL cope when Brisbane won their threepeat? I?m a Melbournian who has been stuck in Adelaide for a couple of decades. The anti-Victorian sentiment from SA would have to be as bad - if not worse - than the Victorian animosity against the Swans. And - my perception at least - is that it?s mostly one way, as Victorians couldn?t really give two hoots about South Australians or the SA perceived rivalry. It exists for State games etc, but I doubt many Victorians thinks about South Australians much beyond the event. South Australians are generally neurotically obsessed with it. The TV, radio and news papers would have something daily. When I first moved here I almost went broke buying the Age to try to get some unbiased news (luckingly the internet saved me soon after).Comment

For me it stems right back to when the club first moved to Sydney, when we requested financial assistance from the then VFL with the move. Ian Wilson (Caro's dad) who was then powerhouse Richmond FC president, was against any such assistance saying the Swans can sink or swim in Sydney. Fast forward to 1990, the once powerful Tigers are doing their Save Our Skins tin rattle to stay afloat. I get approached by a tin rattler at a busy Melb intersection, i wind down my window & said you can sink or swim and drove off.Longmire shows no signs of flagging. Very stable person of great character. When he does give it away or things change, why wouldn't Brett Kirk be the man?

Have stopped trying to have debates KSAS. Sick of beating head against brick wall. Melbourne culture too ingrained.
1993 the struggling Swans are on the verge of being kicked out of the comp. The then powerful Carlton proposed to dance on the Swans grave by playing all their away games at the SCG, which looked like getting voted through, until the Swans win last minute reprieve to remain in the comp. Fast foward to 2005, Swans win flag for first time in 72 years. Carlton win wooden spoon & haven't recovered since from their salary cap rort.
Back to the present, happy Ronke has signed extension. He looks like another to be added to our famous long list of Rookie gems.Last edited by KSAS; 7 June 2018, 04:50 AM.Comment

My sister moved from Melbourne to Adelaide many years ago. When I visited her last, people next door had a South Australian state flag on a proper flag pole in their backyard!I?m a Melbournian who has been stuck in Adelaide for a couple of decades. I?ve got a neighbor a few doors down with a proper flagpole too. Next premiership I might sneak over & run my Swans flag up there in the middle of the night!!Comment

The sound reason Croweaters harbour animosity towards Victoria is because they seduced the rising talent from the SAFL year after year .... to see yr local marque player nurtured locally in a bloody Carlton or an Essendon jumper never went down well at all.
So these days when it occurs the reverse way, like Eddie, they are somewhat appeased but they have longterm grudges and will hang on to them.
PS: I?m a Croweater from way back too.Comment

Good points there Hotpotato but the animosity and suspicion is not just footy related. Seems to be a general state of mind. On the positive side, I have fond memories as a kid going on the Overland train to visit cousins who lived ion Somerton Park. Can't remember the brand names, but Adelaide had the best ice cream and lemonade hands down! The sound reason Croweaters harbour animosity towards Victoria is because they seduced the rising talent from the SAFL year after year .... to see yr local marque player nurtured locally in a bloody Carlton or an Essendon jumper never went down well at all.

Golden North icecream and Woodroofe?s lemonade.
And in the days when there were sand dunes at Somerton beach (till the developers wrecked all the Adelaide beaches) there was a kiosk on the edge of the sand hills which sold the biggest, yummiest Bush biscuits.
And the football players still used drop kicks.
Ah the good old days! [emoji126][emoji126]Comment
