While I only saw the second half, I thought that Amartey may have been worth a mention in our best. Certainly seems a prospect. And D. Smith: is he one of the blond headed guys that the commentators were calling Rose?

Smith was the tall, very skinny guy playing in defence. I thought his attack on the ball and second efforts were tremendous, though he was also responsible for some poor turnovers. As a top up, he certainly showed something.

I wouldn't have Amartey in the best players but he did show a few flashes of brilliance. He took some excellent contested marks but it was his ability to contest a mark, bring the ball to ground, and then recover immediately to contest the ball at ground level that most impressed me.

Liked Ronke's work rate and can see why he received an encouragement award in the shape of being named emergency last week for the senior team.

I'm glad that somebody knows what our top up players look like. Ever thought of applying for a position as a NEAFL commentator.

Very surprised Newman wasn't named in the best players, despite having very different halves of football. He was terrific in the first half as an inside midfielder, and then for some unknown reason was moved to the wing in the second to allow the likes of Marsh and O'Riordan to play in the midfield and was very quiet.

I was looking elsewhere and looked up to see Aliir being escorted off the field by one of the runners. He seemed to have given a free away, but it followed an incident in the previous quarter when he engaged in a bit of throwing his weight around and it looked as if his mates were telling him to calm down. He shouldn't need to be managed, he is one of the more experienced reserves with first grade credits. I am a bit concerned for him.

I would have had Amartey in my half dozen BOG. Positions well and a good kick, useful size, good pace.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I asked one of the players what went wrong. He pointed out that every time one of the gws players did something good numbers of gws players would get around him. The swans, nothing. He said that bailey Stewart kicked a clutch goal for the swans and all he got was a high five from Jake brown.

Most every player in the swans neafl team thinks he should be in the firsts. Most players don?t value the neafl comp and use it only to state their claim for senior selection. I guess this is intentional by the swans, and understanderable. However the other clubs like Brisbane and gws do seem to use the neafl to develop a winning feeling and to strengthen a team first attitude.

I have made these observations before, and I know others disagree which is cool, however I think that more work needs to be done on a team first culture at the swans. This is especially important in the finals and grand final. Look at the teams that have won in recent years. The common thread; team first.

Why do the swans fail at neafl grand finals, because in my view they don?t play as a team.

I would have to say, frankly, that I don't care if we win or lose either. I'm looking just at the performance of the players and how they are progressing toward senior selection. There's so much discontinuity in the side over the season, with injuries, top ups and positional movements directed toward player development, that winning seems secondary. The players seem to be trying to win, but I understand that the focus is on player development, which is hard for the players to ignore.

Surely the NEAFL can get a couple of Communications majors from Uni to do the commentary in a work experience program. The current team only have about a 20% hit rate in getting the player names right. I did find a partial solution. I watched the 1st half with the commentary on, then turned it off fro the 2nd half and played Sweet Caroline in the background on infinite repeat and thought: How good is this.
                        • Newman was clearly BOG for the Swans and can come into the senior side anytime required.
                        • Foote played quite well until he went off injured.
                        • Aliir played well enough on limited time. He didn't play at all in the 4th qtr and seemed to played only parts of the 3rd. Maybe he had 50% or so game time in total. I think he should play another week in the ressies before being considered for senior selection, unless we have no choice due to injury.
                        • Ronke was the standout of the emerging players. He's tough and plays with a lot of energy. I think he'd do alright at AFL level.
                        • There's plenty of development to get Amartey to AFL level, but the early signs are good. He can kick the ball long, but his field kicking needs work. He looks a good prospect for a future ruckman.

No Dawson or AJ yet. At least one of Marsh, Fox, Robinson or Ronke will drop out as an emergency for the AFL.
