Swans 5.5 Giants 1.6 at half time

Marsh has been excellent splitting time between halfback and midfield, basically sharing the role with O'Riordan who has also been very good. Newman had a scare in the 2nd quarter when he was doubled down in pain but is playing on so probably just winded.

Haven't watched, but 10 possessions, 2 goals to halftime for Tipungwuti sounds pretty good.

Patton is a Gumby but still you can only beat who you play on.

Hope Marsh makes it as a regular, seems like a selfless team player.

Thanks Ugg. It is good to see Cameron and Aliirs names mentioned among the good players. How would you rate their games on the 'ready for AFL' meter?

There a is a very interesting interview with Darcy on the NEAFL website of two days ago. It may have been done before the announcement of McCartin's inclusion in the senior team. It seems to be part of football, maybe life, that some get the breaks, others don't. McCartin was a bit shocked to get the call-up, Cameron may be wondering why he didn't. Maybe he is getting to the 'trying too hard" point.
Someone mentioned in the match day thread that that may be a reason for Heeney 's fall off in a couple of areas, he is trying too hard to be the gun midfielder

Yes, is Patton officially a dud number one pick?

Will talk more about this game later, but when Horse was interviewed about McCartin he made special mention of his tank and ability to get up and down the ground. That would be his advantage over Cameron at the moment.

                  ?Best players: H. Marsh, N. Newman, A. Aliir, C. O''Riordan, D. Cameron, J. Brown #NEAFL #ProudlySydney #goswans?

Brown had 6 touches playing a lot of minutes on the midfield. He must have been tagging someone but the major ballwinners for gws were playing against Newman and Marsh from memory

Some big numbers there for several of our fringe senior players. Good to see them keeping the pressure on the current senior team incumbents.

Also glad to see Aliir recognised in the votes for his defensive exploits on Patton (and glad they gave him a key defensive role after using him around the ground in recent weeks).

Thanks, ugg. Looks like we played more directly and with better discipline. Very strong performances from Marsh, Newman and O'Riordan in particular apparently managed to neutralise their ruck dominance. The fact we out-tackled them also suggests we were working harder. Great to get a win at last!

Can you tell us anything about R. Budd for them and also B. Stewart for us - both of whom were top ups that appear to have performed well, especially Budd. Is he in their academy?

Can only tell you what I saw about Budd. He has a very mature body, possibly key position size but was playing midfield for most of the game and moved well across the field.

Agreed re Aliir especially - I was heartened to see that he played as a key defender.

On the stats alone, the Cameron-Simpson matchup was interesting. Cameron was towelled in hitouts, but finished up 4-1 in free kicks and Simpson down 1-5 in that area; also Cameron 2 goals.

Cameron's ruck/forward split was about 75-25. Also it was notable that in forward 50 throw-ins, Amartey would contest with Cameron sitting just outside the fifty just in front of the GWS key forward Patton and Flynn. Cameron's two goals were contrasts - the first was one that Clarko would be chuffed with - he was being illegally blocked in the marking contest by Mohr which allowed another GWS defender to come in and claim the easy mark. He converted the set shot from 20m in front of goal. The second was at the end of an amazing piece of coast-to-coast action and I hope the NEAFL put it up as a highlight as it was one of the contenders for goal of the day.

A smooth chain of handballs originating from our defensive fifty ended with O'Riordan handballing to a free Marsh in the corridor. He looked up and saw a Swan leading the race running into the open inside 50. So he kicked it into space to his teammate's advantage. Instead of something small and nippy like Stoddart (who played the 2nd and most of the 3rd quarter in attack) or Tipungwuti, it was big Darcy sprinting and beating his GWS opponent (could have been Buntine) to the ball and having the dexterity to kick the ball mid-air accurately for the goal.

I thought Newman who was very good again as usual blotted his copybook a little with some selfish options forward, shooting at goal from very difficult situations - either under pressure or on the wrong side for his preferred left foot.

O'Riordan, who was the captain for the day, started in the midfield but would regularly swap with Marsh in the backline. He was omnipresent in all areas of the field and used the ball very well. Aliir played on Patton for most of the day, save for a little period in the 3rd quarter when the Giant was given a run in the midfield, had no major issues in containing Patton who to be honest hardly threatened but was not helped by poor midfield service. But Aliir can only beat what is in front of him and he did all he had to do. Maibaum another solid game mostly on Flynn or Simpson when he was resting forward, reads the play very well and took many intercept marks.

Ling started in the backline, had little impact on the game for most of the first quarter before being shifted to the wing where he started getting into the game. His goal came from a GWS mistake when a defender dropped an easy uncontested mark. Stoddart as mentioned previously played about half the game as a forward, did okay there but I have to admit I prefer his run from the backline and long kicking to our forwards.

Brown, hardly sighted, the only piece of play I remember was marking strongly at CHF from a centre bounce and then hitting Marsh at FF on the lead. Styles had more of the ball than in previous weeks but I'm yet see anything to excite me at the moment, he's quite vanilla. Amartey, tried hard, but undersized against the mature sized Mohr when forward and Simpson and Flynn in the ruck.

Toppies - Tipungwuti was the pick with 3 very well taken goals and inches away from a 4th. Very clever in tight situations with little taps to his advantage, quick feet and most importantly keeps his feet. Also worked hard with his chasing and tackling. Veerhuis I thought made some very good decisions, bit surprised to see him credited with only 7 disposals. Dylan Smith a dependable option in defence.
