It's too early to dismiss him, but his confidence seems shot at the moment. I watched only very short snippets on the weekend, but saw one passage where he had taken a mark on the edge of defensive 50. He didn't move far back from the mark, hesitated, and then kicked a loopy ball infield far from any teammate and turned it over.

Does anyone know who his official 'mentor' is?

I noticed that Ed Richards, my choice for our first pick in the draft, won the rising star this round. Jack Higgins and Laghlan Fogarty, the 2 players Horse interviewed just before the draft, are also doing quite well. I'm hoping that Ling is just going through a defensive training focus and he'll show why we drafted him when several other more highly credentialed players were available. We also extended his contract by a year before he even played a game, so you have to figure we see something there to suggest he'll get going in due course.

He's a kid- some take longer to mature and many at the Swans have served a lengthy apprenticeship - Hewett played a lot in the twos as did Melican. I'm sure others on this forum can add to the list.

Way too early to write Ling off. I reckon he'll show more of why we selected him down the track. Who knows what's going on, could be struggling to adjust to living in Sydney, have some kind of low grade injury (or taking time to recover properly from the injury he did have) etc. Anyway, we got Stoddart as insurance who is a similar type of player (and who was similarly rated to Ling according to various draft pundits despite the significant gap between where they were selected in the draft) and he's going ok.

Also, a big shout out to AJ who is slated to return to the NEAFL this weekend! Go you good thing! Hope he can make every post a winner in the last chance saloon. ;-P

Sydney Uni are unbeaten and undoubtedly have a strong team with many ex-AFL players (I count 6 in today's team) complemented by the best of the Swans Academy players who didn't get drafted. However, they have yet to play an AFL reserves team this year which may have overstated their current position on the ladder.

                          Players we have to control:
                          • Craig Bird - averaging 10 clearances a game since coming into the side in Round 3.
                          • Tom Young - past NEAFL MVP winner and former Dog and Pie plays an important role in their midfield but also is a goalkicker averaging over 1 per game.
                          • Adam Gulden - Rebounding defender. Local Sydneysider who spent 3 years in the SANFL and has returned with a much improved game.
                          • Jacob Derickx - 'Brother of Tom' is their leading goalkicker with 17 (in 7 games).
                          • Jack Hiscox - Not big disposals numbers (14.4 a game) but can hurt with his run and has 8 goals for the year.
