2019 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel
Hawks just acquired Sam Frost from Melbourne too. I'm intrigued by Brand because Swans don't normally bring in mature aged players without having a role in the 22 for them to play.
I'd say he's competing with Melican for the lockdown role formerly played by Reg. Rampe isn't tall enough to really play it but has been doing it by default. AA is an interceptor so in fact other than Brand/Maibaum it's Melican or bust.
Who was available with our pick 25 /32 that we missed out on?
Edit- I’m not suggesting anyone can replace Rampe , who is a star , more that he could be playing more to his size , which would allow Mills to go and win the pill out of the guts like he was born to do.

My second, minor thought is that Bell should be listed closer to the 22. The arrival of Taylor and Gray isn't great for him.
Third thought is it is hard to see us seriously contending with that team next year. The talent is there but needs more seasoning and possibly lacks a little leadership unless the second and third tiers of leaders really step up. Second tier is Papley, Heeney, Mills. Who is third tier? Florent? McCartin (maybe not yet, in just his third season)? Hewett? Lloyd? Cunningham? Of those, in 2020, I reckon Florent and Hewett are best chances to join the leadership group. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

I'm still not convinced by Naismith. It seems that the game has moved passed having a big guy who's main contribution is at the stoppages and the ruckman is now expected to contribute in all facets of the game. Although Sinclair is not fantastic at the tap, he gets around the park well and is more of a competitor than Naismith. Teams like Richmond and GWS demonstrated that you don't need to win the tap to win the clearances.
Changes in 2020 I'd like to see:
1) Reid in defence, McCartain starting at FF / CHF depending on how Buddy is used.
2) Rampe intercepting / run off HB. Mills to play on ball.
3) Heeney and Paps to spend more time in the midfield, either on ball or on a wing.
4) Squizzy and Gray to fill void left by Heeney and Paps up forward.
I qualify these thoughts by declaring I am only qualified to coach up to an U9 level!Comment

Hi AG
A bit depressing looking at that team. Has very good depth in most areas but seems to lack something in your top 18 or 22 that will make it difficult to see us winning against the top teams. This is unlike this time last year when I thought we looked very competitive but were let down by injuries to a raft of experienced players. I did not predict McVeigh, Franklin, Jack, Smith, Grundy, Cunningham, Maibaum, Naismith, Cameron, and Menzel contributing virtually zip as a group. Was hoping for more from Ronke, Clarke and Thurlow as well though with not too much anticipation on the latter two but just hoping they were diamonds in the rough but not the quartz they turned out to be. The three we have brought in seem to be more as replacements for our delisted players rather than the senior players we have lost so I can not see the great improvement that we need. No doubt we will get some good kids in the draft but finals in 2020 look hard from here.
With Gray and Taylor coming in surely Bennell is no longer in the frame.Comment

We look a little stronger for 2020 with our new recruits (should do better than last year's) and our youngsters, who will be better for another years experience.

Much Prefer McCartin up front to Reid ( if one of them has to move which is probably the case ) . Tom reminds me a bit of a young Nick Riewoldt , great hands, great competitor and good tank. Maybe not the greatest kick but can improve that.
I think Parker and Joey will spend some more time forward to allow more on ball minuted for Heeney and Mills, we need to try a few different mixes in there this year. Obviously that includes Florent, Paps and young Rowbottom should get a few more minutes in there too.

I like the acquisition of Gray!
The glaring problem is our midfield. Kennedy, Parker and Hewett are all too slow.
Hopefully we see Heeney, Papley and Mills all move into the midfield or on the wings. We also need Florent and Rowbottom to show improvement and take the next steps.Comment

We need to remember that we rarely see our absolute best team picked because of injuries. In fact, our two premiership years were exceptions where we had a great run with injuries. Across the last few seasons (like a number of other teams) we have suffered from the unavailability of key players. Our squad looks to have more depth going into this next season based on the fact that most of our aging players (and therefore more prone to injury) are gone. Hopefully the replacements being younger will play full seasons. Natural improvement should be expected from our under 22 year players. There should be healthy competition for spots. Still looks to be an over-reliance on Buddy up forward. Also a lack of midfield class unless someone has a breakout year there. Western Bulldogs benefited greatly last year when they moved Dunkley from forward to midfield and he turned into a top liner there. We desperately need someone to do something like that.

Florent showed some very promising signs in three of the last four games this year when he played at the coalface. I would expect that move to become permanent in 2020.

Round 21 v Port: 29, 12 and 9

I wonder if it would be worth Blakey playing more on a wing? His disposal by foot is elite and he has pace to burn. Coupled with height and one more year to bulk up, he could be a very tough match up in his second year.Comment
