If we thought there was some hope left for this season, I think after last night's loss to the lions put paid to that. The coaching staff need to look to the future, if for nothing else, to show the fans that they are doing something for the future. Playing Jack is not preparing for the future, nor is playing guys who clearly are not AFL standard like Clarke and Fox. Let's not hesitate trying guys in positions that they aren't playing currently but have the skill set and physical attributes to succeed in. Playing one extra in defence for long periods, attempting to stem the bleeding, is not working and negative. The coaching team needs to put the responsibility on players to take ownership of their opponents and win the one on one's (which we are losing all the time). Make it clear that it is rebuilding time and that the club is not afraid to make tough decisions.

I agree. I don't understand why they picked Jack, unless they thought they could win.

I've always assumed that we cleared out Gaz and Hanners because we took a tough decision on the future of the side, not because we had a salary cap crisis. Although we may have taken a tougher line because of the size of their salaries.

We need to keep applying that to the squad. Clarke baffles me, as does the non-selection of COR.

I half understand playing the spare as a short term tactic, but it prevents us scoring, so it can only ever be used to defend a lead. It's suicide otherwise.

Clearing Rohan makes no sense-he is one of the few behind Buddy who has an X factor with his speed. Ok, he goes missing a lot, but he can win a game with a handful of possessions. He should never have been cleared.........
Hanners on the other hand was understandable. But why buy average (at best) players? Look at the players the Hawks get: they maybe injured, but true talent if/when fit. Let's hope Menzel will be OK, otherwise our recent trading has been very poor indeed.

I'm having some trouble and would appreciate any hints:
If the salary cap is $12,450,000 for each club, then how can the average playing salary be $371,000?

Hi Ruck'nRoll, maybe the playing salary is taken over all of the players in the league combined with 3rd party deals together with bonuses and payments for wins etc.
I agree straight out average of $12,450,000 over a roster of 38 or 40 players doesn't equate to $371,000.

It is confusing. The second table in this story might help to explain.

Average gross player earnings = (gross player payments + additional services agreements) / number of primary listed players.

So in 2017 for example, the TPP limit was $224 010 504, or $12 445 028 per club. Gross player payments were $231 354 739. Less injury allowance = $222 185 388. But then add $19 864 805 of additional services agreements.

Dividing that total by the average gross player earnings for listed players in 2017 ($352 470) gives about 687 players, which sounds about right (average 38/club).

So I think the short answer is "additional service agreements"

You also need to clarify whether “average” refers to the mean or median. Given skewed shape of distribution, there’s likely to be some difference between the two.

However what caught my attention was his remark that we have 2 good players coming into next year's draft. I assume he was referring to our academy? If so, does anyone have any idea who these 2 good players are? (Roos didn't elaborate).

He was referring to the national draft, not our academy....Therefore a bottom 2 finish, may be that elusive cloud with a silver lining...

I sincerely hope the club doesn't have that scenario as it's goal....

Recent history shows, clubs that go down that dubious path, fail more often than they succeed...One player does not make a successful club....Our club should surely recognise that.
