Barrett's latest musings on the Swans from his weekly 'Sliding Doors' article:

Interesting and also speculated here in recent times....but I'm not so sure. I'm sensing some targeted recruiting/recycling, a la the early 2000's.

Followed by a premiership within two or three seasons.

I think the club will be extremely reticent about investing in a big name, ie, a $800k plus player, given what happened with Tippet and Buddy. I can however, see them going for a very good player, ie, a $400-$600k player, that fits a particular need for us.

$500k doesn't buy you much these days, and could just be a list clogger like rohan was.

I think it all depends on who you go for. Anyone who’s being widely discussed above will probably cost $500k plus to prise from their club by a better offer.

There are a few cheapies running around who cost a lot less of the Roughead(J), Scully, Henderson, de Boer, Kelly (when they first signed him) type.

Although if I heard, as I did with Buddy, that we’d just signed a superstar player no one expected us to sign: Coniglio, Cripps etc. I could handle it.

I can't see Coniglio coming. The ace giants can play in negotiations is that he be playing deep into finals for a least the next 3 or 4 years.
So all we offer on top of that since location doesn't count is very big $$$.
Therefore cost to much to outbid a Vic club.

I hate this idea that we need to sign a big name recruit otherwise the crowds will desert us. WE have a big name, buddy!!!

Fremantle has a New Gen player Liam Henry. Freo may want to trade down to get points, why not help them?

Give them a couple of late picks for their first rounder? Say our second round and two third round picks.

Kelly of Geelong wants to go back to WA. He is in Brownlow Medal form so will take more than just two late first round draft picks.

Why not ask for Tom Barrass as a swap of our second and third?? Here is a better prospect than a rookie kid.

Melbourne forward line is hopeless, and they need some more talent in the back line.

Offer them Jones, Ronke, Thurlow, Menzel, we don't need them, and get back their first and second rounder?

Carlton needs more players in the 24-28 year old bracket.

Offer them Fox who is 26 for one of their third round picks, either 37 or 48; Fox is not a regular 22.

North Melbourne need more big men: Goldstein is 31 year old on the 1 July.

Naismith and Cameron are true list cloggers; get them to North for anything.

Cunningham is another who may be in our 22, but is he really must have???

And the deal i would love to do; offer GWS next year first round for Hately.

GWS likes to space out their first year picks, and as they are finishing high up the table, don't have to many low first rounders.

The 2018 draft will be remember as one of the strongest; so either though Hately went at 14; in any other draft it would have around #5.

He is in the Sier mould, but younger, and there is a good chance Sier will stay at a club with a chance to win a premiership.

After all, he did play in the 2018 GF; money may not be a big priority for him, winning a flag will definitely be one.

Trades can be done without destroying the salary cap, like we did after 2012.

So Smith is out for the rest of the season and his future will be discussed in due course. It's looking increasingly that we will have 4 significant retirements by season's end (Reg, Smooch, Macca, KJ).............

I can't see Horse letting all four retire. Reg, obviously but I reckon it will be left up to Macca and this in turn will determine Smooch and Kizza. If Macca does retire I can't see Kizza retiring as Horse always talks about balance which I can understand as it is a legacy issue to pass on lessons learnt to young players. BTW I am loving Dawson's work but sometimes wonder why he was left to the NEAFL for so long as think he is learning more on the job than in the lower league. He is a keeper and we cannot lose him at the end of the year.

I’m not sure I accept the implication we are winning because Jones isn’t playing. You could apply similar sophistry to JPK too.

There’s no way Melbourne are going to hand over pick 3 for Jones, no matter how many steak knives players you chuck in to “sweeten” the deal.

I do agree our ruck ”department” needs to be rationalised and streamlined. Hopefully we’ll see both Naismith and Cameron play a few games after the bye.

One possible reason why Dawson wasn’t getting a game was because he was down the pecking order behind players who've now left the club.

I do get the importance of experienced players to the side, but only if their form warrants it. The only player who that applies to is Macca. I think retaining Kizza would 100% stop a younger better player getting AFL experience.

KJ out of contract, long time out of form is a definite retirement. Macca with continuing soft tissues injuries surely can't go on.

We're going ok now without Reg, KJ, Macca & Smith plus other senior injuries so maybe none of those four will be on the list in 2020.

Prefer Kizza to impart his knowledge in a coaching capacity, not clogging up our list, taking valuable game time from our youngsters and using up valuable cap space. If anyone stays on, it should be Smith given we have no genuine small lock down defender, as long as he can make a full recovery. Having a year off might actually extend his career.
