I was thinking of another recently departed leftie gut runner.

Had a look.at highlights. Hard not to be really impressed. Elite speed and endurance, bursting out of contests. Beautiful kick on both sides. Pure silk and just what the doctor ordered for our midfield. No wonder we looked happy.

He seemed genuinely happy to be joining the Swans too. I reckon he might be a winner.

What I like about him is that he is an NGHF player. No Go Home Factor.

There's a nice interview between Dylan S and Josh K straight after the draft. Dylan was a school buddy with Will Hayward and although he's never been to Sydney before, Will was talking up footy in Sydney. I'm looking forward to seeing who we pick tomorrow. I'd prefer to have the draft all in the one night; not split over two.

Im hoping this kid can play.
It one thing to think different with a Pick 14 like Ling, a bolter no one expected.
Its a very risky game trying to be different at Pick 5.

He looks good and im glad he was playing Snrs

I dont know enough about any of the Players but is does worry me a bit that our Pick wasnt as expected

Flanders sliding does sound like he had the Vic sook factor, happy he ended up at GC.

I understand Ling has been injured.
Coincidently has anyone seen Ling at pre-season yet ?

Touch of the Scott Pendleburys? Bit shocked when I saw his name against ours but there was some very interesting skills shown in that little package.

                    CB is officially senile!

Cannot believe this; yet again a player around the 180 cm mark.

Will we every recruit a player around the 190cm mark with a first rounder??

We have third rate rucks so Stephen, and the rest of our mids, can't be giving the ball.

They are not big enough to win it.

Another disaster from our club: another recruit disaster to go with Menzel, etc.

3 clubs have snared 7 of the top 10 picks!
I expect Stephens to get some solid game time next year. Good pick up.

Lol, talk about a short term overreaction. Lets give the kid a chance to prove what he can do first hey?

Jeez that was a seriously impressive highlights package from Stephens. Classy, great decision making and good acceleration too. Very happy with that pick.

Also, Gold Coast will have scary midfield in a few years time. Rowell + Anderson + Flanders at centre bounces. They look like 250+ game players.

Stephens is quick and can run under 6 minutes for 2km, which is extremely pretty handy.

Yes, Will Gould. I have such a man crush on him!

Didn't realise Stephens could play inside as well as outside... although I think the Swans like to turn outside mids into inside-outside mids e.g. Hanners, Florent etc.

I think we'll absolutely get someone decent at pick 27 given who's left: Schoenberg, Rantall, Gould etc
In Ollie's case you are wrong. He was actually an inside/outside mid. He always preferred inside mids. His taking the ball off the tap was elite at junior level. Seen as the best roving mid of his year. Take ball off tap and run, deliver. That was his brand. He is just starting to prove how good he is in there and the more time he, Rowie, Georgie, Heens and Ronke spend in there the better. Ronke is actually a very good inside mid. We turned him into a forward out of need in the NEAFL.

Why was it not expected? He was picked to go 6 to Adelaide. One after us. Flanders did not suit us. He is cocky, sulky and not what we needed. What's more he did not want to go out of Melbourne.

Stephens was as near as we could get to what was predicted. One spot up the list from the phantom draft. That's all. He is not kne out of keff field. He was always going top Ten

Well, I am pleasantly surprised. Both with the 'event' and with our pick.

I had never been that keen on Flanders until I made peace with the idea of recruiting him in the last day or so. I didn't expect us to draft Stephens because he had been in the conversation for our pick until just recently. Also, I am surprised we picked such an outside player when the perception is that we need more contested ball winners. I guess that could be a combination of things:

                                > a vote of confidence in Parker, Hewett, Rowbottom and maybe even JPK, Heeney and Mills - and Ollie

                                > changing game style - it seems we are less focused on being a contested ball winning side than once upon a time

                                > factoring in that Campbell and Goulden can win contested ball and are coming?

                                > confidence that we can get another inside mid further back in the draft

                                > the silk that Stephens possesses is rarer and harder to get than grunt?

(I still think we might have bid on Green if we knew we would get him.)

Anyway, that was fun, but tomorrow is probably a bigger night for us with three players (at least) likely to be coming in the door (a fourth might be an upgrade of Bell).

First issue is: should we trade up? I think we will get decent players with the picks we have but might be worth trading up if we could get Port's next pick and we want Dev Robertson who would give us ball winning and character and leadership (perhaps with some go-home factor). How much would we have to pay? I would pay picks 25 & 44 in a heartbeat for Robertson and would consider 25 & 32.

Failing that, I think we have 6th pick tomorrow although a bid for Maginness should come and push us back one and possibly another for Mead. Players left apart from Mead and Maginness of interest include:

                                1. Robertson
                                2. Bianco
                                3. Rantall
                                4. Gould
                                5. Schoenberg
                                6. Worrell
                                7. Rivers

                                (not necessarily in that order)

If we can't get Robertson, I'd love Schoenberg to complement Rowbottom and Hewett as an inside mid going forward. Interesting that Philp, Dow and Cooper Stephens all gone ahead of schedule.

For our third pick there are players like: Williams, Taheny, Taylor are all notable sliders and others like Jones, Rivers and Ralphsmith. Maybe we don't need to trade up?

Looking forward to getting two more good players and another decent prospect. Suprisingly pleased with Stephens.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)
