General footy chat #AFL Round 9 Weekly Discussion Thread

Kick this off early this week. We didn't end up having a 'weekly discussion thread' last week.....I think we all just got totally distracted by our Friday night win and approached the rest of the round without a care in the world!

Thought I'd get everyone's assessment of Tom Boyd's 'career' after he retired today (and BTW, I sincerely wish him all the best in his mental health battle which appears to be likely ongoing).

Will be remembered for starring in a 'faux' premiership but overall, a massive underachiever? I think so....but with a now obvious caveat.

I'm not clear at all if he's got a mental illness or just not prepared to give the game what it needs at the highest level? It feels like AFL used to be a game and now its a business and an extremely tough one at that. I can understand that it's demands crush some people.

Will the Bulldogs have to honor the length of his contract in the salary cap like the Swans are forced to do with Buddy's contract?

My friend who follows the Bulldogs reckons the GF was the only decent game he played. Gee so lucky for us!!

That was the only game he earned the crazy money he was on- just our bad luck!
Wish the lad all the best for the future as he was under immense pressure to perform at a very young age. It now seem it was too much for him.

Nope. It was reported he'll get some payout for this year, but nothing on their cap for 2020 & 2021 when his contract was set to expire worth $1mil per season. I remember their president Gordon having a go at us when we signed Buddy on similar money, objecting players being signed on lengthy big contracts as not in the best interest of competition. Double standards & hypocrites.

There was something in an afl.com.au article that the Bulldogs/Boyd situation is different because was a 'traded' player, not a restricted free agent like Buddy was.....

"The AFL has confirmed that that money does not need to be accounted for in the Bulldogs' salary caps of 2020 and 2021, as Boyd was a traded player, not a restricted free agent."

Barrett: How Boyd walks away from $1.5m, and Dogs get cash to splash - AFL.com.au

Dogs get 'cash to splash'.....that pisses me off a bit.

Those are the rules. I'm pretty sure we didn't pay out every cent of Tippo's salary when he retired. Happy to be corrected.

You are right, we didn’t. It was a negotiated retirement settlement, as is Boyd’s.

I thought Beveridge was a bit over the top calling Boyd a bulldogs legend. The words legend and star are used far too often these days when describing players.

Absolutely! Ted Whitten - now there's a Bulldogs legend! Boyd equal to him??

Or watching the news, "hero" is applied to all sorts of people peforming a worthy or brave deed but very few are actually a hero!

As time passes, Bevo is proving that he is a bit of a tool.

I can't stand the commentators barracking for Melbourne and sad they lost. FFS.

I turned on the match and watched the fourth quarter. My wife wasn't paying any attention, but asked who we were barracking for. I replied West Coast. Any non-Vic team when they're playing a Vic team. There were three highlights for me (as my missus will only watch the Swans out of love for me). Seeing Lewis Jetta play (we still love the Jets), Ryan's mark over Gawn and watching West Coast get the win.

Hope our boys are switched on today, win the contested ball and hunt those Roos.
