Apparently Steve Johnson is out of contract and being “linked” to the Bombers. I hope he stays

After 22 years as an AFL assistant and senior coach, Mark Harvey will depart the AFL coaches' box on Saturday.

Jack Niall (The Age) reporting Geelong are also interested in Joe Daniher along with RFA's Brad Crouch & Jack Viney. If Joe does decide to leave who currently lives in Daylesford, the advantage with Geelong is that he'll able to still commute from Daylesford and get to play in finals from year dot whilst his body can still stand up. EFC are adamant they will match any bid for him:

Id like Joe D but id say we are giving you incentivised 3yr 600k deal, if it gets match we aint dealing with that muppet.

I just hope we arent silly enough to offer what was being reported last year, 2x 1sts.
For all the good they have done in recruiting last year could have undone the Swans

wow imagine if the Cats made that happen re Viney, Crouch and maybe JD

rebuilding on the run year after year staying the in the hunt ie 11 wins this season and coming 4th on the table after 1st last year

Would one, two or all three of these players going to Geelong prove that they are much better at recruitment and or prove what some supporters have said: "we need more concessions for AFL to thrive the next 3 to 5 years in Sydney" ?

we are a couple years behind using the same strategy as Carlton and or Melb with top picks used in the draft and they havent had success shifting into the top4 so they can compete for a GF........does that mean we wont see top4 until 2024 ?

Does the salary cap not apply to Geelong?

Carlton and Melbourne are coming off multiple periods of being basket cases, we aren't that!

Geelong is a desirable destination for former Geelong Falcons obviously but also for players that want to be country/coastal based. They also seem to have great talent at fitting players under "their" salary cap.

A lot of huff 'n puff coming out of Essendon about matching which is what you'd expect. If JD wants out of the Melbourne fishbowl then the best placed team in the PSD to call that bluff is the Swans. We aren't trading for JD, he comes via FA or PSD, this is not a player that has been ripping up the league in the last three years. Dodo might be quietly wishing he'd taken the pick 9 and this years pick 4 on offer last year, will now have to settle for pick 7 compo.

Agree 100%. He comes to us on our terms, nothing more. I still think we would be better served by getting a tall forward who is durable (ie play a whole season) and can play for the team. Lions show you don't need a dominant tall forward to kick goals and I'm confident Paps, Heeney, Parker, Hayward, Squiz and Wicks can kick plenty if given the opportunity (along with a fit Buddy of course).

My understanding of the FA rules is that a club is only allowed trade in one FA per season. So in this case Geelong would only able to get ONE of JD, Crouch or Viney this season (plus they wouldn't have salary cap for each you'd think). A club also doesn't receive a compensation pick from losing a player as RFA if they also recruit another RFA in the same season.

If EFC decides to match any RFA bid for JD they can then still enter a trade deal with that club particulaly if they think the AFL's compensation is going to be unders.

One day, it would be nice if the AFL managed to publish a detailed list, of the third party player payments; or at least, how much each club is assisted by those payments. If people are to have confidence that the salary cap is not being compromised, then that information should be available. Instead, any Google search is largely a fruitless exercise.

Agree with most of your post but am concerned about the last bit...
The mere fact that we offered what we did for a guy 2yrs on the sidelines and a year from free agency doesnt fill me with the confidence you have in what we are and arent prepared to trade.

Again, we are lucky Dodoro didnt take it cos it would have Hawthorned us

I think we made an offer we knew they would refuse. Don't think we wanted JD last year. Not sure if we are even going after him this year given we are allegedly trying to get Essendon to hand over his medical history.
