Let's say that 5 developing players, Gould, Ling, Warner, Campbell and Gulden become good players deserving of being in the senior side. We are only losing JPK and Buddy to retirement in the next few years, so 2 out and 5 in makes for positive result, at least as far as numbers go. There's no replacing a Buddy Franklin. so no point in even discussing it. We just have to do the best we can with a replacement key forward and move on.

I can't predict the future, but looking at our list, I think it's the kind of list that should bring some real improvement to the performance of the Swans in the coming years, even with mediocre results in player development, such as only 5 out of 12 developing players actually go on to become solid best 22 players. Like any typical fan, I'm going to have a positive outlook on the playing group until shown otherwise. I'm hoping that my bias hasn't become Carltonesque.
We'll know it's become Carltonesque is you're displaying the same optimisim after we finish 12th-18th next year. Time to move up.

Not yet, but this is just Step One - Start a rumour.

Step Two is to get some boffin from the media to repeat it. "I hear the Swans are considering a bold play against their cross town rivals to get Tom Green"

Step Three - Sign Tom Green.

        Loving that slogan

Isn’t there a step where we are meant to write his name on a piece of paper and carry it around in our pocket... if we want it enough it will come true?

On FC last night, Caro said Saints are making big play for Tim Taranto who reckons GWS will demand 2 x 1st rounders if he does leaves, based on Dylan Shiel to EFC. If this does occur you'd think Tom Green becomes an increasing commodity for GWS?

GWS stocked up on inside mids. Taranto and Hopper the best if their younger brigade. They would be crazy to give up either. If they need to clear a few out, any combination of Caldwell, Hately and O'Halloran would make more sense. 2 first rounders this year wouldn't compensate for the loss of Taranto.

Ludwig, your analyses are great and spot on- I’m calling you Professor from now on!
Our main issues are the ruck and key forward. The reality is we need Joe-he can potentially fill either role. McCartin should be playing back and AA second ruck, as he makes me feel nervous in the back line. Our midfield will improve and if we have a good first ruck we will win more than our fair share of clearances and give our forwards chances. Buddy back will make all the difference as he brings others into the game. But we have to plan for life after him, hence Joe. I think he showed in the last few games that he is physically ok, at least for now, so please let’s just get him!

Interesting that we had a Key Forward and let him go. Gary Rohan has been playing well for the Cats at CHF.

Problem was that the Swans used him as a flank player and the entire midfield strategy was to kick it high to Buddy (or Reid) with poor delivery while Buddy had two or three defenders hanging off him. Gary was out in Siberia and hence his stats at the end of the day were usually very low with only one or two cameo appearances. We also had McCartin in waiting as our next KPF so we deemed Gary surplus to our needs without trying him out in a role which would best utilise his talents.

Gary now starting to realise his enormous potential at Geelong.

Watch Gary Rohan tonight & in finals. Especially Grand Finals should he be lucky to make another one.

He was a non contributing liability for us in two grand finals.

He will be judged accordingly by the football world going into any future finals.

I loved coaching and playing sports all my life.

I would rather make a final and lose then not make it at all

This logic of "choking" has never made sense to my pea brain........being involved and competing in the final series is where it's at in any sport. Its a stage like no other. If you dont measure up on the day who cares, at least you made it there to find out.

                      good luck to Gary

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Garry contributed to us winning as many GF's as Buddy but took far less $$ in the process....

Wish he was still with us.

I wish him well in his finals this year, He should grasp the opportunity when it arises.

He may have only a few opportunities in future seasons to play finals at Geelong. He's 29, and the club has a looming list problem that they need to fix. Their best 22 players have an average age of 28, which is about two years older than any other club. Ablett is 36, Hawkins and Selwood are 32, Dangerfield is 30, and they have a core of players (including Rohan) in the 27 to 29 age group. Unless they fix that problem - and their three first-round picks in this year's draft will help - they are not going to play finals much longer and a bottom-four finish in the next five years is on the cards as all these players retire.

SMH reporting we have registered interest in Tom Hickey. Not sure about the wisdom of trading him in given he is 30.
