My choice would be a forward, either McDonald or Thilthorpe.

Not totally sold on McDonald; I am always a bit suspicious of players who have fast improvement in one year.

Have they done their dash in improvement, whats left, and at 196 cm, can he really dominate against tall defenders?

Grainger-Barras is a safe choice but a good one, but defenders don't win games.

Jacob Weitering was a number 1 draft choice in 2015 (a weak draft), but really doesn't dominate games.

At 196 cm, 98 kgs he does compare to DBG, 195 cm, 78 kgs, but I would say he is much better than Weitering will ever be.

We are recruiting two midfielders, so really we should balance it out with someone else.

However, would be totally happy with another midfielder.

We can really set up our team with this draft.

Possibly but it is a pretty pessimistic way of looking at things. Odds are that, in hindsight, there will be a better performed player taken later in the draft than the one we pick. I, for one, have faith.

Perhaps I am more concerned that the McDonald might end up at Hawthorn and having an outrageous career for them when it could have been for us.
Either way, we are well placed - both McDonald and Grainger- Barrass have been playing senior WAFL this year and both Campbell and Gulden have played academy and Sydney footy. We'll be picking players based on established form rather than something of a lucky dip that the Victorian draftees are.

I see that Archie Perkins has told non-Victorian clubs to not draft him. Draft tampering anyone?

With all the stories over the last few weeks, about how the mustard on turd are really into Phillips, I'm interpreting this as them saying, that if we take Phillips, then they will bid on Campbell. Hopefully, McDonald or Thilthorpe will be still available at our pick, and that will make their veiled threat irrelevant.

No club is ruling out bidding on anyone. To show your hand allows other clubs to plan more accurately and in relative terms puts your own club at a disadvantage.

If you listen to Kinnear in his preview on the website, they are planning for all sorts of possibilities, however unexpected. He is not even confirming Sydney will necessarily match a bid on any of the academy boys. The whole draft is now a game of poker with bidding and live trading. No poker player would show opponents a single card. Leave them guessing.

I doubt they will considering it's looking more and more likely (based on all the phantom drafts) that McDonald may still be available at that pick! I would think they would snap him up quick smart if he's there at 5 without giving a bid a 2nd thought!

Just on that, a few months back if not weeks ago, I thought we had absolutely no chance at landing McDonald (even with pick 3). Now that there's talk that not only is there a chance he'll be there at our pick, but we are even likely to overlook him for DGB! Well I would have thought I'd be infuriated by that notion!... But I'm not now for some reason... I am actually coming to terms with that DGB will not only be a good pick, but with his drive and all his other talent, that he may turn out to be the best player in this draft full stop!

To be honest I think I'd be reasonably happy with any of the big 5 in this year's draft, but I reckon that in the years to come if we have DGB lining up on McDonald or Ugle-Hagen or Thilthorpe etc. I think that his drive and competitiveness will outshine all of them and he will towel them up more often than not!

Re LMac, 196cm is pretty much spot on for a KPF IMO . I don’t think his height is an issue. Looked at his highlights again and he looks the goods to me. Good field kick along with the main forward attributes of overhead marking and goal kicking etc. can kick both feet two. I’d be stoked with him. I also don’t see how rapid improvement late is his junior years is an issue in terms of his scope for improvement. It could possibly mean he has greater scope to improve than a player who has been steadily very good through juniors. To me, that could easily be the type of player that may have peaked already.

Nah that not draft tampering, just normal service. Draft tampering would be if Campbell said he wanted to stay in NSW. All hell would then break loose.

Nope - they are locked and loaded. With the current year , how would anyone know if Phillips was a better option. At least with Campbell and Gulden you have known quantities. From what Ive seen at junior rep levels there really isnt that much seperating the guys considered top twenty to the next fifty in line. Hence why you will often see some pretty good guys come from later in the draft or even from rookie.

David King as good as said Campbell is the best player in the draft on SEN today.

I read a good point on Twitter re: Perkins stating he is not keen to leave Victoria and probably wouldn’t play at his best at an interstate club.

Essentially it was that if Tilthorpe did the same as Perkins ( and it was heeded by other clubs), then the crows could essentially take whoever else they please at 1, and then grab Tilthorpe at pick 9.

If he’s not ready to leave home then he’s not ready to nominate for the draft.

I reckon you are correct. He did play an awesome game in defence in the qualifying final against the crows that series though.
