Just up on the AFL website, what's likely to be revealed at next Monday's club hook up.

Could be up to 40% cut from the Soft Cap (which should be hard cap), down to as little as $6mill so that's a lot of staff and or some much smaller salaries off field. Saves the clubs a total of $65mill

Four out of town locations being considered for a Vic hub.

Strong indication that there will be six on the bench which will be ok for us as we know who missed out on R1, Buddy, Hewitt and our high draftees.

Vic & NSW are the only states with open borders, you can't get into WA or Qld and in SA you have a compulsary 14 day quarantine when you enter. Be interesting to see how Vic centric the decisions are going forward.

Baz you might want to check the latest on the mighty NRL’s plans to restart, their main broadcast partner has hit the brakes on it . That amazing new broadcast deal you mentioned apparently hasn’t quite been finalised yet ....

Harley is pushing for Sydney to be a hub but I doubt the AFL will agree. I haven't even heard NSW being mentioned at all.

There is also pushback on us and GWS being able to start training before other clubs because it is considered to be an unfair advantage.

Six on the bench - and how many on the field?

Gill floated the idea of going down to an on-field team of 16 players - though I think he meant this could be considered for future years not the current (suspended) season when it resumes.

I suspect 16 on field, reduced total list and a reduced salary cap will be considered as a package for 2021 onwards.

I think 16 on the field would be too dramatic a change to the game. It just seems like an overreaction to the current situation.

Good on the NRL for re-starting the comp. They have the ability to create better isolation conditions than the general public.

Would also have to be pretty unlikely for a player to catch corona given there are only 1500 active cases in a country of 24 million at the moment.

Given the low risk, I can only conclude some people actually want to see things destroyed or shut down longer than needs be.

No reason why the AFL can't get going in June.

Controversial opinion but I'm a big fan of the 16 on the field rule and have been for 5 or so years now. As much as I love footy, my one gripe is with how congested and messy it can become, which only seems to support my non-AFL supporting friends view that "AFL is just seagulls fighting for a chip". And while this can be exciting I think 16 on the field will dramatically increase the watch-ability of AFL. 18 on the field was designed for a time where players where less fit and professional and didn't have the durability to cover the KMs modern players seems too. About 80% of players seem to be on-ballers these days, and while the 6-6-6 rule has fixed this a little, I do think ruck-rovers and rovers are a bit redundant with everyone around the footy. Also with the addition of the two new teams I do think list talent overall has dropped, so this could go to combatting that too...

One question though: how does the AFL envisage the 16 a side working with the new 6-6-6 rule?

Practically speaking , and removing all bias, if all 18 teams are going to be housed in one hub , Victoria is obviously the place to do it. More than half the teams are already based there, and the resources and facilities for Footy ( both training and match play) are far greater in numbers here than anywhere else in the country. That’s the reality. I could care less where it is, it’s not like we get to attend anyway. They could play it in NZ for all I care.

Bit puzzled why you Barry would be so keen to have it held in Sydney anyway, other than some sort of strange badge of honour that NSW managed to pinch something from Victoria. Football games, that no one can attend. Awesome stuff, Go team !


Anyway , Even Freo’s coach agrees about the Vic hub ( Assuming it is one Hub for all teams )

It’s exactly the same with NRL, If there is to be one single hub, NSW is the obvious state for that to take place.

The game has had dramatic changes regularly from an introduced diamond that turned into a square. 2 injury replacement players to eventually four that can be interchangeable regularly throughout a game. Never used to have out on the full for over half a century. At one time a major league in Australia had 16 a side. Prior opportunity only came in a few decades ago. And i could go on all day.

We get told regularly about the history of the game like nothing has changed but if you spend any time reading it’s history or having lived through its history you’ll notice the game has changed and evolved on a regular basis.

Personally I’m an advocate for it and have been for a very long time. Reduces congestion. Encourages a more free flowing game.

Plus a big advantage is it allows local sides to continue to function. In most leagues around Australia if you can’t fill a reserve side your out of the comp. It may feel like the game is healthy at the top level but in the lower leagues and country leagues it’s a lot harder to fill a team sheet these days with Saturday becoming almost like another day of the week for society.

This may effect the AFL having a hub in Victoria as the very conservative approach from the premier and CMO could slow the opening of things in that state considerably.

We have an appalling record at Princes Park. Less than 30% win/loss ratio. I say we play in Tassie, we've never lost down there.

Stastically pre Sydney we would have a terrible win loss ratio. We were a basket case for the majority of half a century. When we’ve had a competitive side we’ve played very well there. Which has been predominantly post moving to Sydney.

Since 1981, as Sydney this is better with 11 wins from 36 games. giving a win/loss ratio of slightly better than 30%. Of those 11 wins 3 were against very poor Fitzroy teams and the last 3 times we played there were against Carlton teams that were decimated via penalties from their salary cap rorting, so recency bias may play a part in the thinking that we seemed to play well there.

My memory of this ground was always walking away after losing. Best memory of winning a game was beating Carlton in 96, and we sang Cheer, Cheer in the social club after the game. Carlton social club members were far from happy that we had got entry to their social club and even more upset that we were celebrating. Thank god for security that stood between us and the more vocal of who were expressing their displeasure.

We have a great record at Marvel in recent times although the clubs we have played there haven't been that strong.
