With the suggestion of late June a fair few have spoken about are the AFL going to miss the boat in showing live sport?

First NRL starting late May & now bundesliga. Plus NBA looks like commencing training from May 8. Also the UFC249 will take place May 9.

Has the AFL been to slow with this?
Have we missed the opportunity to showcase our game to the world?

I don't care much for showcasing our game to the world, but the NRL have run rings around us so far.

The AFL have got stuck in the trap of trying to please everyone again.
Need to be more hard nosed.

At a time when money is thin on the ground for clubs the chance to showcase to the world potentially could bring in much needed dollars.

I’d say got stuck in the trap of not realising it’s a national competition. To Melbourne focussed.

Like I’ve said previously the WAFL & SANFL could end up starting before the AFL.

As a side note it was hilarious listening to Mark Robinson trying to say how good it would be if the NRL delayed their start date to coincide with the AFL ???????????? the bloke has to be on the pipe for sure.

As funny as John Ralph talking about holding it In Melbourne for a Melbourne festivas. One thing that got me thinking was who’s paying for the aluminium pole and who’s going to be nominated for the feats of strength. I’d say those Melbourne “journo’s” have got to be sharing that pipe around......talk about insular

No one is surprised they are melbourne focused, and they dont see it as a big deal that the NRL will start a few weeks earlier, because it happens every year at the start of a normal season.
Much to the angst of the northern clubs. But who cares in Melbourne ?

Those journos care because some will be locked out and irrelevant if it’s held somewhere else. That’s the only reason they’re pushing the Melbourne hub even with no crowds & that everything points to holding it outside of Victoria

Yes, the whole AFL infrastructure from journo's to commentators to production crews to influencers is based in Melbourne. That's part of the reason it will only ever be in Melbourne.

The thing I was amazed at was the lack of understanding of the state by state rules in relation to COVID by the journos - asking horse about what you can and cant do in NSW. Really you would think that if your full time job was being a journalist that you would at least be across the rules in other states when the main topic of discussion is when the game will restart and where. They were all oblivious.

When it comes to journalism in Victoria in regards to Australian rules footy it’s such an insular place. They have very little understanding of what happens outside inner city Melbourne.

Instead of asking Longmire straight out would they follow the AFL in regards to training or abide by NSW legislation and commence training when the NRL does. They allowed Longmire to dictate the conversation. When it could have been a very very good conversation in regards to the WA clubs already starting it and setting the precedent for the NSW clubs.

                    https://www.afl.com.au/news/392302/why-wa-clubs-have-an-early-advantage-over-their-rivals

On Tasmania they should have did some research and then they’d understand how shoddily that state has been treated, so Gutwein was just giving back what they’ve copped for a long long time.

No talk about Gutwein suggesting it’s not a true National competition either, but hey tik tok that’s the big news. In regards to Tassie I think the gloves are off. The AFL, especially Norf, needs Tassie just as much as tassie needs them.

Comes across as Melbourne radio more than a national sports show.

I get why it’s the base and fully understand why but why do we have to continually put up with journalists that have no idea about anything apart from the most basic details. I mean FFS Robbo rabbiting on about the “breaking” news in his toilet papar in regards to a possible SE Queensland hub. We’ve known about it for days.

There is nothing wrong with having headquarters based there but they need to have more of an understanding about footy outside of the Melbourne cbd. Clarkson talking about the demise of country & metro footy is not news to a lot of people. It’s happening in a lot of places. Insular, very very insular.

Look Barry, none of us like the way the AFL runs the game but for once they are putting public safety ahead of money....something the NRL aren't doing due to their desperation not to go bankrupt. Having nothing in the kitty actually makes them way behind the AFL as a well run organization. Do you hate everything Victorian?
Also, the players need to show they can be trusted to do the right thing and be responsible citizens when they return.....well, recent history shows that on that score, they are as incompetent as the clowns that run their league.......
It's a real pity your geological and political bias makes you miss or completely ignore the obvious.

I think you just like disagreeing with me.

NRL have run rings around the AFL about covid-19 response. Even Vic centric Hardwick agrees with me.
Outside of covid-19 is another matter, but they still pull big TV dollars and their major sponsor hasn't gone into administration.
Could be worse, could be rugby union.

I'm reading that the NRL is saying they've been given the green light to resume training on 4th May, is that correct they have the ok from government or is it just posturing by the NRL?

If the NRL really has the official ok then why the hell isn't the AFL starting at the same time?

AFL 2020: Crowds at sports after coronavirus, NRL 2020, when will fans be allowed at games, Martin Pakula, AFL return date | Fox Sports

This is the perfect example of how insular Victoria is. NT are less than 2 weeks away from this 28 days. SA will get there as there figures are in excellent shape with no expected cruise ships or aircraft to arrive. They have 14 active cases!!!!!! Same with the ACT - 2 active cases.

6,729 Coronavirus Cases in Australia - COVID LIVE

WTF can’t any journalist point out that the SANFL who have a pencilled in date of May 31 for a restart will probably have crowds before the AFL. It’s laughable and absurd our journalists have not pointed this out.

Players could spend up to 20 weeks in hubs across season

Like I’ve said previously. All setup for the final hub in Melbourne to finish the season and finals and possibly at an empty soulless MCG. Well done AFL commission, well done. Bravo ???? ???? ????
