Hayward's average stats for the past 6 weeks.

Possessions 10, tackles less that 2, 3 goals over 6 games. Not good enough and not pulling his weight. Never had a break out game that I can recall.

Thoughts.

The stats are not great, but his role has evolved and he's clearly playing better since he was sent down back.

Your stats include the 6 possession game v GWS when he was given a tagging role on Haynes and did very well at it. He was probably one of our best in that game, even though his stats were poor.

He looks bigger and stronger this year and is playing a more physical game. I can't point to any stats, but I feel that he's turned the corner and ready to become a very good player for us. I think he has potential to play in the midfield, but will likely remain mostly a forward.

Thoughts.

He’s had a change of role and become a defensive forward playing on the best defender .

He crucified Haynes when we played GWS, who hardly had a touch. Major factor in the victory.

Against Carlton he played on Docherty and was doing a very good job in the first half. Had at least 2 huge run down tackles. Reminded me of Gaz with how fast he was at top speed.

Don’t think we can judge him on possession and goals when that’s not his role.

This is not just Rowbum or Hayward's being inconsistent. It's pretty much all our young promising players. This is why I'm a little different to most in wanting a balanced approach to our rebuild. Yes, we need to use the draft to get in young talent. Problem is most take time to develop and when the bulk of the team is young, inconsistency will be an ongoing issue. We need to actively pursue some mature talent to help lead the youngsters. I keep harping on about the Lions but they are the best example. Talented youngsters, mixed in with experienced recruits like Neale, Robinson, Lyons, Cameron and McCarthy.

You can call me a heretic all you like, doesn't bother me. Those are hard facts, they're his numbers so if it's ok for Hayward to get heat for his numbers then it should be applied equally , including to your favourites

Perfect example is Clarke. He gets the ball and dishes it off effectively, so his stats (particularly effective disposals) look OK. Problem is, most of the time these disposals go backwards/sideways to a teammate who is under immense pressure which then results in the ball being turned over.

Our problem simply is that we have loads of injuries, are playing sub par AFL players such as Clarke, Taylor and McLean (because of these injuries) and our senior players are out of form (Reid, JPK, Sinclair) or have had inconsistent form with big gap between best and worst (Parker, Papley).

The future looks very bright with Dawson, Florent, Rowbottom, Hayward, McInerney, McCartin, Blakey etc.

If Taylor can’t get his fitness levels higher his career will effectively be over come the end of next year . At his best at Brisbane he averaged 15 to 20 touches as that high half forward . He averages less than 10 this year

Stephens is very strong for his size. He will bulk up similar to Florent .

I don't see it in Blakey or McInerney. They have no physical strength at all and often those that show no strength as teens, like Hayward and Stoddart, don't ever get it no matter how much time they spend in the gym .

Hayward is getting quite strong. Mickey O ended up pretty strong playing as full forward.

No it's not. You need strength and conditioning at a high standard if you want to have any hope at a decent AFL career. Blakey and McInerney will become physical liabilities when they reach a point where they can't back up one performance with another, and another. I've seen it with lads I've coached going back to the 80s. It doesn't matter about size but strength matters. The ones who don't have that core strength struggle to get any consistency in their game. They have a stand out performance and you won't see it again for 4-6 weeks. They end up playing with injuries, get battered easy which hinders their performance when they are playing out matches winded. This is not a knock on their talent but rather their capacity to display that talent. Very rarely does a player overcome their lack of core strength.

As for Hayward he is now a 4th yr player and might be physically less imposing than he's ever been, though I wonder how much of that is lack of tenacity and application on his behalf.

Agree re Stephens- hopefully starting from Round 1 next year
