As someone who only really began following the Swans intently in the mid 00s (i blame the fact I was born in the early 90s), is there anywhere I can read about this? I've heard many times of Carlton preying on the corpse of Sydney, just like how other clubs preyed on the corpse of Fitzroy

I was too young to remember the days myself (while I watched footy from a very young age 4 or 5, I never really got into it until 95/96), so I don't remember it first hand. But I've read plenty about that time and the steps Carlton took, and I've vowed to hate that scum forever in a day, and always will. Even more than Collingwood. Even more than the Wees and Poos, who I would gladly see expunged from history at a first chance if that was possible. They have some quality footballers, but are going nowhere fast, no matter how much Melbourne media want to pretend they are improving.....I remember our darkest days in the 90s when it was touch and go whether our club would survive. I would wake up in the morning and turn on the radio to hear if my club still existed. In those dark days, Carlton was waiting for us to die and was making plans to move into the Sydney market after we'd become extinct. It's a club with no morals, no integrity. I, too, am loving they're extended stretch of mediocrity. Long may it continue!"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Got nothing from our young midfielders - Rowbottom, Florent, McInerney, Blakey.
Florent was great as a half fwd flanker but why can't he do that as a mid ?
Forwards made the best out of deplorable delivery; defence held strong but the dam walk broke late. Is what it is.Comment

I actually thought Florent had a decent game tonight and was in our better midfielders.
It was in and under where we got smashed. Our top clearances - Kennedy with 5 and amazingly Blakey with the same. Parker got 4, but then no more than 2 from anywhere else. That's where we lost the game."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

He was not midfield that's why. Played off the flank. He was doing nothing in the midfield before he was moved to the outside. Rowbottom will find himself being dealt the same hand if he keeps this form up, so too Blakey .I actually thought Florent had a decent game tonight and was in our better midfielders.

Just a thought for those going to town on Reid, Cal & McLean as our forwards - we were on fire in the first quarter - 7 goals up - then the rain came and the ball & ground seemed to stay greasy for the rest of the night (a lot of guys losing their feet & dropping marks - not everyone, but many). The wet weather seemed to coincide with our capitulation, and wet weather is rarely conducive to the effectiveness of tall marking forwards. And this might be exacerbated by rushed, bomb it long forward 50 entriesComment

Agree as well as the umpires. They were appalling tonight.I actually thought Florent had a decent game tonight and was in our better midfielders.

A choke can mean squandering a lead yes, but also refers to failing to win important games that you are heavily favoured to win. I would still say GWS losing a must win game for their finals chances to Adelaide is a far bigger choke than us blowing a 39 point lead against the Blues ( also playing for finals chance ).
Failure to perform where maintaining ones performance is highly important.
Bit more on the line for the Giants, against a team that was a laughing stock two weeks ago.

Frankly speaking I was not too unhappy. It was a big mistake not to bring fresh legs into the team as they looked very tired in the last quarter. This combined with some appalling umpiring made life difficult for us. Its a crazy season and its so hard to come to play every single match.A choke can mean squandering a lead yes, but also refers to failing to win important games that you are heavily favoured to win. Agree Goswanees. I thought the biggest factor in the turnaround was the rain; and I have to say it, we are rubbish in the wet and have been for ages. We don't have a wet weather game plan, or the wet weather personel.Just a thought for those going to town on Reid, Cal & McLean as our forwards - we were on fire in the first quarter - 7 goals up - then the rain came and the ball & ground seemed to stay greasy for the rest of the night (a lot of guys losing their feet & dropping marks - not everyone, but many). I find it hard to believe anyone thinks last night wasn't a choke, but each to his own.As per Wikipedia
In sports, choking is the failure of a sportsperson or team in a game in a situation where........ in an instance where they have a large lead that they squander in the late
stages of the event
Just maybe it wasn’t really a choke simply just being beaten?Comment

The issue is addressed in Jim Main's book, "Shake Down the Thunder." Read the chapter called "The Darkest Days." It's also mentioned briefly in another Jim Main book, "In the Blood." Read the chapter on 1992.As someone who only really began following the Swans intently in the mid 00s (i blame the fact I was born in the early 90s), is there anywhere I can read about this? Probably the best summary of the situation, though, is here:
On This Day: Swans survive.... Just
This article concentrates more on Collingwood's role in saving us but I concentrate more on the fact that the vultures at Carlton wanted us to die.
They haven't won a premiership since 1995. May that drought continue. Forever!Comment

It started raining in the second qtr, we kicked a further 4 goals in the rain in that qtr.
We got smashed out of the centre and ran out of legs. Going in unchanged on a 5 day turnaround in hindsight was pretty from the MC.

Carlton was a powerhouse in the 1980's that turned into a horrible club in the 90's as the expansion, salary cap, and draft took away their ability to buy any player they wanted. Their admin kept the same entitled attitude, and made more and more desperate attempts to stay strong. Killing the swans and playing all away games in Sydney was one scheme they had.The issue is addressed in Jim Main's book, "Shake Down the Thunder." Read the chapter called "The Darkest Days." They lost a lot of fans from then on, as the putrid administration could no longer be glossed over by wins and premierships.
It will be interesting to see if they ever have a richmond-like revival on-field, how many of their fans come back, and whether they will ever regain big-4 status in victoria.Comment
