I was a bit surprised that Longmire said that Campbell might start at cornerback, especially since ovals don't have corners, Nonetheless, there's plenty of competition at the corners, with Cunningham and Ling also likely. Lloyd should retain his role as point guard and Rampe as a sweeper, if we play 2 tall defenders (Melican and McCartin) to cover oppo power forwards.
I would like to see us try playing Dawson and Mills in a double linebacker setup. Both are good in the air and excellent kicks; this setup should have them in prime position for the counterattack.
Regardless of Franklin's fitness, I think we will go with a 2 power forward attack, chosen from Franklin, Reid, Sinclair, Amartey, McLean and McDonald. Papley and Heeney will be the primary strikers in this setup with Hayward at flanker and hopefully getting more of the ball up the ground.Comment

Seriously, is there a spot for Hayward in the best 22? He doesn't get much much of the footy but he is a serious back slapper and high fiver (or is that a high elbow these days) when a team mate goals, which appears to keep him in the team.I was a bit surprised that Longmire said that Campbell might start at cornerback, especially since ovals don't have corners, Nonetheless, there's plenty of competition at the corners, with Cunningham and Ling also likely. No way Hayward isn't in the side. He's got the coach totally under his control.

We just need a goalkeeper, a striker, a couple of tight ends, a safety and we're all set.I was a bit surprised that Longmire said that Campbell might start at cornerback, especially since ovals don't have corners, Nonetheless, there's plenty of competition at the corners, with Cunningham and Ling also likely. Got it? I have, and I'm going to try to avoid Quarterback, Goalkeeper, Sweeper, Midfielder etc. for the rest of the preseason to see if it's possible.
Clearly Ludwig and Mark26 have also gotten it - what cheeky little dickens' they are.Comment

It is a shame how traditional positions don't really exist anymore.
Rover, centre, ruck rover have been replaced by inside midfielder, outside midfielder etc.
The term quarterback traditionally has no place in our game, but as it has evolved with a kind of Mills type Sweeper role, it seems to have just as much a place as any of the other BS terms that seem to be around.Comment

Clearly they were joking.....but are you?

At least you acknowledge they are BS. We have enough BS coming from Channel 7 and Foxtel, let's not join them.It is a shame how traditional positions don't really exist anymore.

Hey, I'm just wondering where people see COR's future? I don't think anyone (not even Ludwig) has him in their best 22. Most people don't even have him as one of those next in line. Despite this I think he is a great chance of adding to his games total this season (although I am less confident about him cementing a regular spot in the 22). If he does play this year does this mean the people who don't consider him in the 22 or among the next in line were wrong? Or can the two be reconciled (apart from through an extensive injury list)?
My thoughts are that, at this stage, COR is in front of Ling and Fox. I wonder whether he could be leapfrogged by Gould or Campbell and a club desire to fast-track their development due to their higher ceilings. Colin consistently impresses as a lovely and determined bloke and I wish him success. I think he's a great influence to have around the club. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Love COR but after last season, he has to be behind Fox......even with Fox being cut then retained. That may mean the club has him in front of Fox but Fox definitely had a superior season to COR last year. I too hope for success for Colin.....he is persistent and determined.Hey, I'm just wondering where people see COR's future? I don't think anyone (not even Ludwig) has him in their best 22. The quarterback is a real role in footy. It exists where there's a player sitting just behind the clearance to get the quick hands out the back, and then set up play / dump it up the line. Our game evolves and steals roles and ideas from other sports. However, "Position A" has not and never will have a role in footy.
Instead of our best 22 for round 1, it would be interesting to do a best 22 by round 22. Realistically, we aren't a contender this year. We may surprise ourselves and sneak a final, but let's be real. To the earlier point, our top 2 recruits aren't ready right now, but might be in September for back to back games. And we'll be wanting to see them push regulars like Cunningham and Sinclair out of their spot.Comment

I agree. Totally loathe these American expressions. Don't like Soccer expressions being used either. Why can't we be Aussie. After all it is Aussie Rules we play NOT AFL. Australian Rules Football. Remember that. It has been played since 1858. The first game being played at Melbourne Grammar. But of course it's predecessor has been played for thousands of years, Marn GrookIt is a shame how traditional positions don't really exist anymore.

He does not play the same role as Fox. I believe Fox will definitely be in the starting 22. COR has improved greatly and is a good solid player now. The defence, like the rest of the team, will probably change according to need. Different players will be used there in different games tobetter match up on the opposition.Hey, I'm just wondering where people see COR's future? As to Ling. He is a first round draft pick who would have had 40 games by now had he not gotten injured. He will also be in the mix.
Will Gould looks set to debut first round if his progress during the match play is anything to go by.

Your so called Quarterback has been a role I footy since I can remember. We did not steal the role from American football people like you just stole the term. But what actually does an American Quarterbackk do? He picks the ball up and throws it to other players. What does an Australian rules player do who plays the intercept role? He intercepts, he dished the ball of. But an American Quarterback does not intercept. His only role is to pick the ball up and throw it to a teammate without getting sacked. The roles are not the same. The quarterback is a real role in footy. It exists where there's a player sitting just behind the clearance to get the quick hands out the back, and then set up play / dump it up the line. OK. Let's examine if this role was stolen from American football. Have there been intercept players in the past? Indeed there have. Our own Paul Roos was very good at it so was Leo Barry. Alax Jesulenko was also very good. Garry Ayers was superb in that same space. Adelaide's Ben Hart and Andrew McKeodwere very good at the intercept mark. They constantly got intercept marks and set up play. McLeod was so good he won 2 Norm Smith Medals.
So the intercept mark is not a new thing. In fact at one stage the extra player, especially in a Terry Wallace team became that player.

.....but now that you've brought it up
, no terms already in use in other football codes but not traditionally used in our code should sensibly remain exclusive to the other codes. Got it?
