I wouldn't be surprised if Carruthers turns out okay. We usually do well with our 1st rookie pick.

The positive comments on O'Connor is nice to hear. Bodes well for our KPPs and we can be less concerned about how Melican does.
Gould had a pretty good second half. More impressed by O'Connor, though. Brand also had a good game. Although there was a bit of traditional fullback about him: very good at one on one contests, not as good at kicking. McCartin also did some good things, but was probably a bit rusty. Looks a very nice kick, but sometimes didn't choose the right option. Obviously will improve with the run.

Rowbottom - clearly a level above, looked great around contests, and spent a lot of time on Tom Green, who's a real bull

Sheather - real goer. Very physical for such a young player. Good understudy to Wicks for the next 2 years

McCartin - given the back story and his limited time down back, he looked good. Reads the footy well, uses the body. Might have a future there

O'Connor - wow, really hard to tell he's new to the game. A lot of promise with him

Ling - thought he looked solid in defence and clean with the pill, without being outstanding

Bell - just doesn't have that defining trait that takes him to AFL standard, but looks better than most out there

Taylor/Clarke/Gray - not at all up to AFL standard. Burn it so often, no pride in disposal

Sinclair - don't expect to see him soon

Gould - if you weren't looking for him, he wouldn't stand out to you. Did some good things but not ready to bang the door

Agree with all of that. Once Rampe and Heeney are back, it's pretty clear who our best 22-25 players. Besides Rowbottom and McLean, none of the others today warrant selection in seniors if there are no injuries.

We have to remember many in the VFL squad didn't play too many, if any games last year. So let's watch this team and players have a real season against some good sides and then we will have a true picture of their potential to make the Swans best 25. Only first competitive game for many

Funny how the Swans' website recap of the game tells a different story:

Colin O'Riordan starred with 31 disposals, while Lewis Taylor (31 disposals and one goal), Ryan Clarke (30 disposals) and James Bell (23 disposals and two goals) starred while Harry Morrison and Hayden McLean also impressed with three goals each.

                Maybe Gould is a forward.

O'Riordan is surely a better option than Melican.

O'Riordan sustained an injury towards the end of the match. It may not stop him playing but it won't help his performance.

It's always hard to judge as comparing reserves to seniors bit like comparing apples with oranges. But what is clear to me and has been for a while is that Melican has poor foot skills and lacks vision. At the same time, not quite big and strong enough to play the lockdown role on a big key forward. I'd be happy to give any of Brand, Gould or O'Connor an opportunity to see what they can do.

It was the missed tackles which bothered me.

What I found really confusing were the numbers on the back of the Swans VFL players jumpers.

The second Swans goal was kicked by #55, according to this list Sydney Swans VFL Players we don't even have a #55.
According to the kayo replay, the goalkicker was Harry Morrison, who should be in #53.

Many other VFL players seemed to be in the wrong jumper according to the kayo commentary. Including
Cordell was in #58, should be #54
Gulden was in #50, he should be in #63
Thorne was in #59, should have been in #60

                          It's very confusing and vexing.

At least the AFL players seemed to be in their correct jumpers.

There's a VFL app which contains the match stats if anyone (like me) was wondering.

I notice Brand had 22 disposals and 10 marks. I thought he was pretty solid in his few previous games for us. His height and experience might be helpful down back. We were a bit rudderless last night.

Good to get a win but if any of these players are getting games we are in trouble. Very average standard of game
