Then you need to be prepared for a much more brutal free agency system. Just doing the commodisation of player contracts shifts the balance unfairly to the franchise.
There are other factors that make it different. Top 5 draft picks are worth a lot more in leagues like the NFL and NBA because a single generational talent can turn you from being obsolete to a contender in a few years. AFL is not as dependent on a star athlete.

AFLPA would say no. End of story. No further discussion necessary. Move along.

On a side note, I’d love the AFLPA to diversify and negotiate on behalf of other industry areas … more specifically mine!

I think also because most of them are 21 when drafted, so much more developed both physically and in terms of their craft. When you're drafting 18yos, it's very hard to project how they are going to progress. Hence we see a lot of busts, even in the first round of the draft. Often even within the first few picks of a draft.

I know the Dawson situation may give them an excuse if they want it but they may not. Some kids like to make 'their own way' in life.

I agree. The balance of power is too far on the players side at the moment.

Great to hear mate. You mentioned in your previous posts what impact the lockdown has had. Fantastic that there are brighter days ahead.

My wife’s family is in Qld and there is no prospect of seeing them. Perhaps we need the Hoff to get to the NSW / Qld border like he did at the Berlin Wall in 1989.

I tend to agree with this but are curious as to what the 'lesson' would be?

Well NO- he was good the last half of last season and very good this year. So he has given us 1 and a half years of real service while being bang average in prior years. Yes, he showed talent and potential but he was pick 56 and played like that in his early years.
Bottom line: we’re the club that picked him and helped him become the player he is today- he owes us big time!

Very poor form if he doesn’t put pressure on the Crows to give us something acceptable- he really has the strongest card to play, as a threat of staying with us is so much stronger than being allowed to walk to the PSD!
And apparently he was looking like a good inside mid in the 2's but when he hit the big time it became too hard. So we worked with him and moulded him into an outside runner to take advantage of his skills. You don't see him in and under too often. It looks like Adelaide think that they can make him into an inside mid like Bontempelli. Now that will be an interesting watch, because tough and hard he is not.

The NBA have a players association too yet they still have that system in place. I think there is too much power for the player here and the clubs (and AFL) should step in.

It also would seem that Ladhams is coming our way. It may end up being an effective swap of these 2 players. Bad deals happen all the time in AFL. If we had a bit of salary cap space, maybe we could fashion a good one for us one day.
Appears Ladhams wanted more ruck time than up forward. Maybe because he didn't like playing forward. As I have said before, could it be that we see him as the KPD we are desperately looking for. He is clearly not devoid of ability and he is only 22, a bit young to be writing off a tall with some ability.

Stevo, I’ve explained in previous posts what the “lesson” is- extend or re-sign players well before the last year of their contract. If they refuse, you know where you stand and can plan accordingly. We left Jordan’s a bit late- should have been done end last year. But we did have COVID.

Sounds like Adelaide has now offered simply Melbourne first rounder for Dawson. Which supports that their offer last week was that pick minus a bit (i.e. pick swaps in their favour). I suspect we will push for a bit more yet - would be awesome if we could eek a 2nd rd pick swap in our favour out of it - but even if we got say a future 3rd rounder, then that could be broadly okay I guess.

There's definitely a lot less diamonds in the rough than the AFL, but it's surprising how many busts there are in the NBA. Particularly #1 picks.
