Wonder what the thought processes were when we recruited Taylor and Grey.

I recall Horse spinning their recruitment in terms of us needing some mature bodies on the ground to have a good mix of youth and experience. I can't see us retaining them (unless they have a hell of a year) beyond their contracts as that young pack should be mature enough to largely hold their own now.

Paddy Mc, we'll make the correct decision following medical advice from specialists and the AFL, the latter needs to clear him to play I believe.

Having pick 3 in the Mid Season Draft is a bonus, sure to be some real talent available.

I wonder, do they have to clear him to play in the East Coast VFL as well? Any level of footy carries risk for him.

beggars, choosers. There wasn't much on offer for the salary cap space we had. I thought Taylor showed a bit, on occasion, last year. But yes, Papley's 'return' to the fold, the potential shift of Heeney to a forward role, and the emergence of alternatives (including, I am hoping, Hayward's resurgence on the evidence of what we've seen of match sims, as well as Wicks) all don't augur well for either Grey or Taylor's chances of grabbing and holding onto a place in the team.

I'm not sure I agree with the beggar analogy in these circumstances - more like the indulgent side of chips.

listening to Longmires post game and also the first match vs GWS with Tom Harley...........plus seeing Gulden, Campbo, Chad with serious game time, it appears these guys will get more game time than say Taylor, Gray, Oriordan, Brand etc. Longmire and Harley sounded more bullish post pre season that these young guys will get a fair amount of game time in Snrs in 2021.

Macca also looked more than capable if he can get his tank up to where it needs to be in 2021.

Im wondering if this strategy than creates a further plateau of total wins in 2021 ? ie if no Buddy will we win only a few more games due to these young guys thrown in and investing in them now for better outcomes in 2022 and beyond?

Would this strategy if adopted than also open a window for us to attract experienced talent via trades for 2022/23 because a player looking at the Swans can see us about to move towards the top8 around 2022/23 ?

Doesn't that risk another club picking up Paddy McCartin? As in we (potentially) invest in him to demonstrate he's AFL ready, and someone gets all the benefit. Does it benefit us at all that he's in our VFL side, come mid season draft time?

I've wondered the same thing. As far as I can tell, we are taking that risk. What's more, assuming he does well, that means we will not be able to risk using our pick 3 on any different player (assuming he's still available at pick 3). So snapping him up now potentially allow us to get another great prospect as well. (I realise that we currently only have one free spot on our list but I feel confident, based on history and the law of averages, that another spot will be opened by injury by the time the mid-season draft comes around.) I guess we have decided even though the cost of listing Paddy now is low, it's still too big a risk to be worth taking at this stage.

Mid season draft was last introduced in 2019 and according to Mid-season draft: Your questions answered The draft order Is determined by " Like the NAB AFL Draft, the Mid-Season Rookie Draft will be selected in reverse ladder order. The mid-season draft will be based on the ladder positions as they stand after round 10. " So we possibly won't have pick 3. I certainly hope that we would have a higher ladder order this year!
