They are all a Risk but this always happens.

Parker would need 5yrs to go to Goldy and could get it but I dont believe they have all the Cap room due to their ladder position, they have bottom end players on good money.

Dawson a chance to get poached for big money but hoping we can satisfy him enough back end his deal.

Stephens deserves more games and I doubt it will be about money for him.

Hewett got looked after in his last contract, I'd say we can keep him happy and i doubt big money will come for him.


We could shed, Taylor, Gray, Sinks, Naismith all players who wont be on huge but would be above where they are on the list.

I doubt Essendon are in a betrer position to offer Parker more and with Dodo it wouldnt happen

Dawson deal would suit but id rather keep him, think of the guys that have actually been traded for Top 5 picks, multiple All Aus

Carlton arent flush with cash, so they wouldnt pay him enough to land us a second rounder

They have high grade footballers on every line and were able to get three All Australian level footballers in the offseason (Cameron, Higgins, Smith).

We have a lot of guys (Franklin, Parker, Heeney, Mills, Lloyd, Rampe, Papley) on very good money, and in the next couple years a lot of
re-signing to do. So something has to give I would say. Not everyone can afford or will even want to give up a million dollars or more
over the length of a contract to stay. It's totally understandable that players do what's best for themselves and their families. That's what
pretty much everyone else in society does.

You have to laugh at the utter nonsense journos will write - like this gem:

He did well to fall out of favour so quickly, given he missed rd 1 (injured if I remember rightly) then played every game until that season ending injury. Or did he fall out of favour between when he got injured in the Rd 7 match and the end of that game in Rd 7

If you look at the Herald Sun Top 100 salaries as a guide, here's the blokes we have apparently (and sure a couple are out) in that top range.

Mills @ $600-650K (seems fair - Jack Steele on another $100K )
Papley @ $600-650K (seems fair - for eg, Charlie Cameron on another $100K)
Lloyd @ $600-650K (maybe a fraction overs, but not much)
Rampe $700-750K (seems fair, - Steven May on similar - but will take a bit of a cut on next contract)
Parker $775-825K (about market rate - Clayton Oliver and Lachie Neale on similar)
Heeney $825-875K (paid a bit overs when North were throwing $1m a year at him, and he's had injuries to diminish some output, so next contract will come back a bit)
Buddy $1.45-1.5m (back ended contract, and his goes down next year and out year after anyway).

So take Buddy out, as he was a one-off and not relevant to what happens next few years anyway, and we're not doing anything stupid salary wise. We had to go a bit high on Heeney, but that deal ends next year too. You can however see why the club did a fire sale of Hanners and Rohan a couple of years back, and couldn't match what Port threw at Aliir.

I think the challenge for the club is finding space for all the talent coming through.

It's not that easy for Dawson and Stephens to leave if they get a decent offer. They're not free agents. I'm sure Dawson is happy to be part of a winning team. It's not like Stephens is being left out completely. He's getting chances, but the competition for spots is strong, as it is in most good teams. There are plenty of good players at clubs not getting games. Most stick around and force their way into the side. If he's good enough, there's a spot waiting for him. I think they will both sign.

I can't see Parker leaving the Swans unless we drastically underpay him. I think if he gets around what Heeney and Mills are getting, he won't be going.

It's usually reported that nearly every club has TPP issues, but most manage to get through. Collingwood was a really poorly managed club and got caught out. The Giants simply had too much talent to pay the going rate, let alone above the going rate.

It's been widely reported that Hewett is on the trade table. It just makes sense that he goes. He's a very good player, but he's the most replaceable of our inside mids. We need to lighten up on our midfield depth to give others, like Stephens, another opening in the senior side to shoot for. All the pieces are in place for Hewett to leave as a free agent. Another club is likely to be able to offer more money than we can, and his spot in our senior side is not secure, even though he's a highly appreciated member of the team.

I think we would let Taylor go if he gets an offer from another club. He's good enough to be playing at AFL level. We would also let Ronke go. NM are looking for small forwards. It could be a good destination for either.

It makes sense to wait until the new salary cap number comes out before commuting to a contract where a salary boost is on offer, which is probably the case with Dawson.

I've been saying for a while that I think we will lose Hewett, but keep the others. I hope we can limit the losses to that.

i wondered whether a team like Hawks, Carlton or North would love to add a leadership player like Luke Parker and give him a year longer than we are comfortable to offer?

I suppose if a team like the Swans can do a Buddy Franklin ie longer contract .....I wonder if it is possible whether a Melb team might do a similar strategy ie Parker for 4 or 5 years?

Parker appears to be at the peak of his powers and is so bloody consistent week in week out like Kennedy............a massive asset for a team rebuilding etc if they would give away a decent pick though?

For me though most of the lads will be wanting to play together in 2022 and give the comp another shake in their window

Spot on. This is all just the usual end of season speculation and story-fishing. With Cripps, Walsh, McKay, Curnow, Weitering, Saad, Williams, Carlton will have a harder time landing and keeping players than almost anyone. Unless John Elliott is reincarnated as president, of course.

Tom Morris is an excellent journalist. He spoke about 4 Swans players and only made 2 errors about them. Stephens was a pick 5, not pick 4 as he said, and Parker is a RFA, not a UFA, as Morris stated. So you can tell that he's really looked deep into this issue...

"A restricted free agent is a player in the top 25 per cent paid players at their club this year where they have been for eight or nine years. " Parker is a UFA, not RFA. He was drafted in 2020 and this is already his 11th season at the Swans.
