Actually, I read in the AFL website, that Paddy McCartin and Ben Silvagni are training for our VFL team.

Ben is 196 cm, 87 kg, 20 year old defender: maybe they are seeing if he is a late developer, because he has the blood lines.

Our tall defenders have not really come on: Brand, Melican, lets hope show Ben something!

I suppose if we really wanted to draft Paddy, we could organise to have him come off the ground looking dazed, in round 9, and then have him sit out round 10?

If B. Silvagni or P. McCartain are killing it in reserves, can we just use our last list spot on them at any time?

Bit harsh on Brand, I thought he looked at home in our defence in the few games he played, just happened to get injured. Wouldn't want to compare him to Melican haha

So once the period for a preseason selection is over, we would have to wait for the midseason draft?

To me, that sounds unfair. We could put the work into players like Silvagni or Paddy for them to then be drafted by a club with a higher pick?

And other clubs can put work into their VFL players and we could draft those players. I have a feeling that if a player is on a club's VFL list and that club wants to draft him, then the other clubs will respect that and let him get to his club of choice.

It's unlikely Paddy would entertain offers from other clubs. Like the pre season draft, players tend to end up where they want to.

Stupid idea! After 10 rounds it will very much depend on who you've played, easy early draw and you'll be further up the ladder than you should be, tough draw and you're lower but will come home with a wet sail. Remember Norf were unbeaten after 10 rounds three years ago after a very soft early draw, but only won another two for the remainder of the season to miss the finals.

Adelaide and Norf almost certainties for picks 1 & 2 after round 10, same as they were in the ND. Could be some gems in the MSD this year after no 2020 underage footy.

maybe we want one more top-5 pick next year?
Our senior players have been very patient last few years..........

I was thinking of the current list today and it struck me that we have 7 players that have come from the Academy program viz; Mills, Heeney, Campbell, Gulden, Blakey, Bell & Wicks. This represents almost 1/6th of the total list. What a great achievement.

And Sheather makes 8. And Sam Naismith may also have been part of the Sydney academy, which would make 9.

And Cunningham is a NSW boy from the Giants Academy.

I don't think so AG. There's a fair bit of talk coming from the playing group (when they are being interviewed) about getting back to playing finals. Tanking isn't in our dictionary. We're not as low as Carlton.

The Academy is clearly so important to our future. It helps grow the game in NSW and players drafted are less likely to leave given there is no "go home" factor to contend with. Its also worth mentioning that we have had a number of academy products that have been on our list in the past but have not made it eg Brandon Jack. There have also been a few that were drafted elsewhere. I think the Academies are vital to the future of all 4 northern clubs.
