He's been as big of a recruit for us as Hickey. Great news. The logical successor to Horse now.

Great news, and makes sense.
He’s clearly a bloke unimpressed or unethused by the footy media bubble that is Melbourne - having seen a version of it in Adelaide - and likes what he sees in our list and stability of the club, compared to the dumpster fire that is Collingwood. He also has at least the option of being a potential successor to Horse, depending on how long he goes for. (Though I love Horse so long may he reign.)
But I suspect the happiest bloke is Horse himself. Pyke rightly gets some credit for accelerating our switch to free flowing footy after its emergence last year. But in an age of slashed footy departments, doing more with less, COVID, etc etc, imagine the relief for a senior coach in being able to occasionally turn to someone who has actually done the job and ask: what do you think?'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Harley on the Hewett situation (basically says nothing but fwiw):
Sydney CEO comments on George Hewett free agency situation
Sydney CEO Tom Harley has revealed his club is yet to commit to midfielder George Hewett beyond 2022, and vice versa…
“George is a restricted free agent and a really valued member of the footy club,” The Swans CEO told SEN Breakfast.
“He hasn’t signed and he hasn’t committed to the Swans and the Swans (haven't committed) to George to be honest beyond this year.Comment

What Harley is saying is what we know. George is a very good player, but in excess of what we need, given the depth of our midfield. That we have Mills and Kennedy on the sidelines and still may not have a spot for Chad Warner in the side is testament to this state of affairs. So if we're having salary cap issues, George has to be one way to give us some relief.
He's one of my favourites, but this is why I suspect he will be playing elsewhere next year.Comment

Pathetic if we let him go. Way worse than losing AA given our lack of quality inside mids.

Would be disappointed if he left.Comment

So, I'd definitely prefer to keep George, as every team needs those selfless players who do the hard work that lets others shine, George is a solid player in his own right, and as well as we're developing our midfield, we've seen in recent weeks it only needs a couple of injuries to make him essential.
But, I get it if he leaves. My thoughts on Carlton are well known. But if they a) guarantee him a starting square slot to help ease pressure on Cripps and Walsh, and b) can give him a financial offer we can't match (say, four years at $500K, vs 2 or 3 years at $380K), you'd probably take it if you were him.
And for us, beyond JPK, we have Parker and Mills to lead, Rowbottom and Warner emerging, Gulden will go in there more, JMac has shown he can, Heeney at times, Dawson on a wing, etc etc. Plus we free up cash, and potentially get a second rounder in compensation we can use as part of our efforts to get another list hole filled - ie, KPD
As I said, I'd rather keep him, but sometimes things have to give on both salary cap and list strategy.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

The Swans have the deepest midfield in the league; maybe not the best, but the deepest. We need to give opportunities for the young ones to play and not languish in the reserves.
The in vogue prototype inside mid player was someone like Patrick Cripps, but things are changing, and a mix of bulls and speedier types are having the most success, like Essendon with Stringer, Parish, Merrett and McGraw. We had some good success with Papley at centre bounces and I think we will see more midfield time for Heeney in coming years.
A POD advantage for the Swans, going forward, is to have a wide range of players at centre bounces, obviating the opposition from planning midfield matchups. We mix things up so much, the opposition don't know how to set up to stop us. We have the players to make this work.Comment

There is some sort of a myth that's been going around for a while that we lack quality inside mids. This is simply not true, as evidenced by the fact that we started the season playing Hewett in defence, because there wasn't a spot for him in the midfield.

Who have we got ?
Looking more likely Florent wont be the player we hoped he'd be , starting to think Stephens will be the same , could be gone anyway , RB, Clarke these types wont last , Jmac is outside, Gulden and Campbell wont be permanent
Are Chad and Mills gonna be doing it all by themselves ?
Hewetts decent nothing special but lose him and our already poor depth under Jpk and Parker becomes very direComment

Hypothetically speaking, if Kennedy retiring this year meant Hewett staying, I'd take it. Big call for against an absolute club champion, but Hewett is only 25 and is severely underrated as a midfielder.Comment

Tony Armstrong mentioned salary cap/planning was one of the reasons AA was let go.
He was not threatening to be as good as he turned out to be at PA this year for the money he was being offered, so we probably felt we would have been paying him overs to keep him at the time.Comment
