We could be waiting for a while to learn who plays. The Buddy article on the Swans site says the R3 team will be announced at 6.25pm on August 2.

Buddy was rested to avoid a 14 day break for him if he was rested next week instead. This way he gets 12 + 9, instead of 7 + 14 days rest. He was always going to rest one in the first three rounds.
I think bringing in Hayward for Buddy is a good option, Maclean if they want more height. I do think this early in the year they are more interested in getting games into players and seeing how everyone plays with the new rules/style, than winning games they have probably pencilled in as a realistic loss anyway.
Stephens in is also not a bad option, but it would have to be at the expense of Hewitt (for speed) or Blakey (for impact). I dont think McInerney deserves to go out, and the rest of the side is pretty settled.
This game is a great test of our new game plan, as well as whether we can switch to defensive mode when (not if) the Tigers get a run on. I know their fans are pretty worried about this game, which itself is very pleasing.Comment

I am sure Buddy was thought to be a liability for this round. Does not have the run to play against quality opposition hence rested.
I reckon it may be Hayward in ... who plays on Grimes and neutralises him. But I am happy with McLean too but as I suggested earlier they may bring in Callum Sinclair and get some substantial height advantage in the front half.
With the Essendon game they will rest Logan and bring back Buddy I guess but not Errol or Campbell. With those 2 they will play around 5-6 games before any rest. They both look like were at the pace of the game right from the start.

Yep. Thats logical. Let Buddy work his magic on a Thursday night.
While Buddy is resting. Let the 1st year kids freshen up for Thursday night. They are 1st year players and need carful management.
There are some Swans guys would come in and to replace these guys and be highly effective.
Outs
Buddy
McDonald
Gulden
Campbell
Ins
Sinclair (help Hickey)
Heywood (defensive forward Grimes)
Stephen’s (let him run)
Melican (take a tall).
Imagine those 4 ins against a depleted bombers. Rowbottom might be ready as well.
That’s squad play and informed player management."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Just keeping him out so that he is fresh for when we play 'em in the Grand final

In general, you play your best team against the best teams, and look to rest players (if you must) against weaker teams. Players in general don't need to be rested after 2 rounds, noting Buddy's situation is somewhat different.
The beauty of this strategy is that you can say to other young players like Warner and Blakey that we need you to push to your absolute peak tackling intensity against the Tigers because we have fresh reinforcements for the following Thursday night to come in and give you a break. Tell Blakey and Warner that your game intensity can be off the charts as you won’t need to worry about backing up in 5 days time.
I think with so many young bodies in the team that a European soccer squad mentality is required to keep them at high intensity over 22 weeks.

Players usually don’t need to be rested after two rounds but a five day break is difficult for young bodies to back up from. The next couple of rounds after next Thursday are regular weeks breaks so the 1st year footballers (form permitting) can continue well from Thursday.

I'm with Ludwig. To win you need everyone going at 100%. Other than Buddy, I can't see any others bring rested unless they are banged up. This is a great learning opportunity for our youngsters. Seize the opportunity don't walk away from it.Comment

PO'd about Buddy. We are so close to having our best 22 on the field we just cant get there. If we bring Stephens in for Bud , then next week Bud in for Blakey.
My memory is bad at the best of times but i cant recall the last time we had our best 22 all available to play ??? Im called negative a lot . I believe this team will be even better once we get that 22 playing together. Thats the faith i have in the team . And the coaching
Beating the tigs this week a bridge too far though atmComment

Yes our depth is improved, but its not like we have 40 players to choose from all at the same level.
You pick your best team in Rd 3, bar whoever is out injured. End of story."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

It might work in football in Europe (where teams have squads full of superstars on every level), but name me a time where such a tactic has been consistently used by a club in AFL/VFL and done so successfully?
