Lol yet another typical deflection. I said nothing about any player in response to your original point - all I asked was how you think you can objectively measure something that is purely opinion based and subjective. It was you, not anyone else, that was claiming 'facts' around ideas of 'talent' and 'capabiltiy'.

But as always, most can see your posts are just more of the same old @@@@.

Was agreeing with you mate, just expanding on your original point, in response to the absurd original assertion

I think a big problem with Blakey is that he doesn't really have a position. He was drafted as a key forward, then talked about as a wingman, then was tried as an inside midfielder and is now also pinch hitting in the ruck.

I would like him to settle down as either a forward or midfielder and learn his craft there.
He has had his moments, but my take is even taking the finals issue out of contention, he has not met the hopes had for his career at the start. A perfect example of someone rated very highly early in his career but never quite getting anywhere near it.

Agree re: Blakey in terms of picking what his role will be and sticking with it. What that role should be is another question altogether.

yawn is anyone else bored to tears with the Rowbottom bagging by an absolute minority and the staggering plethora of rebuttals?

The majority won’t budge the naysayers.

The naysayers will whinge unrelentingly the loudest.

Can the mods just delete posts relating to this absurd discussion and we all just move on?

No amount bagging Rowie’s selection will change him being picked (or not) and frankly (to me) it’s tiresome.

Some say to ignore the posts, but I’ve gotta wade through those time wasters to actually read things worth my time

I tried, in vain, to find a match report.

Best I can do is the stats: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/game...620070505.html.

              McVeigh's 64th game; Jack's first.

Elite players no doubt help teams win premierships, and in 99% of cases you need a reasonable proportion of 'elite' talent - whatever way you actually seek to define that in an objective measure.

But in a lot of grand finals (at least the close ones), while a moment here or there from an elite player may be what swings a contest (think Goodes on 1 leg in 2012), it is often the more 'run of the mill' players that have the key impact on the overall outcome and are the difference between the sides.

Because you are ultimately only as good as your weakest links out there - the old adage of the importance of the bottom 6. In a salary cap constrained sport, where you simply can't have a team full of elite players, I think it remains as important as ever. Elite players are an essential ingredient to success, sure. But having a balanced squad where the bottom end of the team (in terms of output/performance/whatever measure you want) is able to perform when it matters is just as important. Both our '05 and '12 premiership sides are great examples of that - I'd argue West Coast and Hawthorn both have plenty more established 'elite' talent then we did. But we had the better 'teams' on the day because our bottom ends of the 22 were better on the day.

The scene: the 2024 Grand Final vs The Suns.

Swans trapped in the back pocket. A scramble. A pack forms. Rowbottom manages to flick a handball out to Campbell. He kicks down the wing to McLean. Ballard spoils. Rowbottom runs on and scoops up the ball. He fends off Anderson and keeps running. One bounce to 45m and goes bang for goal. With 20 secs left, the Swans hit the front.

The post-match post from The Bloods:

Rowbottom took lazy options. His handball should have gone in board to free the corridor. Then once he regathered on the wing, McDonald was streaming forward on a lead to 30m and had his man beaten. Until Rowbottom learns the right options, can execute them and knows how to work as hard as his teammates he’ll just be a plodder.

No. “The Bloods” is entitled to his opinion on Rowbottom. I don’t agree with his opinion on Rowbottom, however his arguments contribute a diverse viewpoint and should be welcomed.

To call for the The Bloods posts to be deleted is a prime example of “Cancel Culture”. I stand with Piers Morgan and will call out this “Cancel Culture” when I see it.

Your comments on Jude Bolton on page 2 don't look so good in hindsight either.

Agreed. No need to delete or cancel but also no need to try and convince him to change. It's a waste of time. Just ignore.

On reflection, it was poorly written by me. Shame that you have to be a dick about it though.

My comment was in direct reference to gloveski's post that Rowbottom needs to become elite for us to move forward.

In clearer terms for you: We need players like Rowbottom to take the next step and become elite in order to contend (and ideally win) a premiership.
