Data is from Telstra's tracker feature which mentions the top 5 players on the ground for each category:

I also love the South jumper and am all in favour of connecting with our 'South' fanbase by wearing it for our away matches, especially in Victoria.

I'd be quite happy if it became the Melbourne away jumper, and I think the designs have sufficient commonality not to confuse the brand mcs.

However if a Heritage round ever re-appears I'd love either of these

I haven't seen anyone take the mickey out of you for having great confidence and belief in particular players. Rather, it is the relatively excessive level of criticism of every little action for a few players in the crosshairs that some have found frustrating at times. Very different things.

Jmac lines up very nicely with Mcleod statistically at the same age:

The other pondering thought to throw in more broadly - I still think Campbell has the potential to be the best of them. We haven't seen so much of him this year, but there is a reason he was rated so highly and bid on so early. Its great to have such a good core, with several other youngsters that can become very good players too coming through together.

actually Bangalore and I were both ridiculed for having high praise for Chad and Jmac , though i reckon Bangalore overstates Chad's importance to this team , super talent but as of right now is a kid and the team was always gonna be just as good with or without him (better with him obviously )

yes i have not forgotten about Campbell . i dont see him as an all-rounder who can do it all like Chad , Jmac and Gulden . He has great speed and a great kick and his role will suit that and i reckon he will do it outstandingly . So too Logan Mcdonald. I am a big fan of Dawson , Papley and Mills all stars already . Heeney overrated but still a great player cant deny that. Mccartin i have not liked his year but hes shown he can be an elite defender . Give him time . Blakey oodles of talent but no idea what to do with it , maybe coaches have cracked the code playing him HBF , hes looked great there and as i said has shut me up . Still have high hopes for Stephens , no shame in taking longer than most to find his feet .Hewett has shut me up too and still only 25. Could have 5 or 6 good years left as a Swan. Hayward , Florent, Wicks , Amartey are decent contributors albeit dont think they are destined for stardom and thats ok

Its a great young group ,still dont reckon we will win it this year but next year and beyond looks good

Rohan is close to fastest in the game. He's lightning. I imagine Petruccelle might be up there? Who are the other fastest AFL players?

Sorry... I normally try to ignore your posts but this is absolute BS. I'd like to see you quote those posts where you were ridiculed. Pretty much everything I've read on here is overall positivity from lots of people about Justin and Chad. I think you like to create this divide so you can seem like you and Bangalore are the only ones talented enough to see talent in these players. By all means, have your opinion, debate it respectfully but stop with the narrative that you are somehow the Yoda of talent identification and the rest of us are not worthy.

We all love Chad and Jmac, but it's just that the obsessive fawning adoration becomes sickening after a while. We can still love them lots and lots and lots, but maybe we can just say it a bit less often.

Maybe some of the waaaay over the top hyperbole trotted out has been ridiculed because of its inherent ridiculous nature - but not on the basis of the concept of praising them as quality young players.

Only time will tell who may or may not make it. I'm happy to stick with my call that Campbell may well be the best of the lot of them - but my measure of 'best' is very different to what your measure of 'best' is as well - we have different views on that which have been starkly highlighted at many points of times.

Its less the issue of 'confusing the brand' due to different jumpers, more the need to recognise who the club now is and where it is headed - as Barry said, its about achieving a balance. And there is a commonality issues with the Dragons in the NRL (as trivial as that may sound - for the sydney market it is something to take into account).

As I said, happy if they want to make it the away jumper for Melbourne games. But I wouldn't take it any further as some have suggested (probably less on here and more in other social media domains) of making it a permanent jumper for games played outside of Sydney (Clash issues aside of course). It needs to be two cities one team, not two cities two teams.

As much as we need a strong nod to our history, we need to recognise the club we are now today - which while still maintaining plenty of great links to the South Melbourne days, is an entirely different beast altogether.

I reckon a proper retro round should include lace up jumpers however like the picture on the right - could you imagine today's AFL footballers dressed up like that

i specifically made note that i did not notice anything about Chad until pre season of THIS YEAR , same time as everyone else saw him . I was not an oracle and Bangalore falsely said that i was onto him before anyone else and i corrected him . All i said in the pre season is that i thought he looked something special and he'd end up in the 22 over others who were more highly fancied at the time . i was proven to be correct about that but there have been plenty i was wrong about too like Wicks Hayward Blakey and ive acknowledged every one of them !

The numbers tell the story for J-Mac. He is in the top 5 for maximum speed. Where he kills opponents is the total distance at high speed. He can quite easily and repeatedly run for 150m at high speed over and over. His opponent may be able to go at only 70-80 metres before slowing.

You see so often that his opponent busts himself to get to a good position. J-Mac tracks him, wins the ball and then takes off the other way. After the 1st burst the opposition player can’t go with J-Mac and the Swans then break away.

With his amazing running the Swans essentially always play with 18.5 players instead of 18 because his running gets him to so many continual positions in play.

Looking forward to Campbell coming on with that speed and kick. I see the Swans deploying a 3 headed running monster (Blakey, J-Mac and Campbell) off half back where the opposition won’t know what to do.

JMac is both a credit to recruitment and coaching.

Beatson has rightly got lots of plaudits for picking him well before anyone else would have likely done so. But the coaches deserve credit too. His first few games were headless chook stuff. I'm not knocking him, that can happen to young guys.

But after round 4 or 5 they took him back to reserves last year for a serious stint, and as soon as he returned you went - whoa! His composure, run and decision-making were a stark difference and you could instantly see a star in the making. One of the reasons I was buoyant on how we finished last year.

I think this was the jumper that gave South Melbourne the Bloods moniker. The diagonal red stripe was described as being like a streak of blood.

According to Wikipedia the slash was replaced with the red "V" in 1932.

Perhaps we should play a match wearing this? In the VFL?? Would be fun!

its a delicate balancing act, and I think we have the balance about right (prior to this year) because we can leverage support in both cities without the determent of our primary city (Sydney, which pays all the bills). And use south jumpers while hubbing in melbourne make sense too.

GWS has tried to leverage the created in sydney, not relocated angle. But without much penetration yet. As they get older and more part of the fabric of Sydney, expect that to increase. And our balancing act to adjust accordingly.

Except, of course that GWS were not created in Sydney at all. They were manufactured at the corporate headquarters of the AFL in Melbourne, and they will always be tarnished by that. Just like their 2016 finals banner slogan "It's Our Time"- after 5 minutes in the comp - their claim to being Sydney born and bred is utterly ridiculous.

I'm sure many of you have seen this: it's the oldest footage of Australian Rules and happens to be the 1909 Grand Final.

You'll notice when the teams come out (about 2 minutes in) that several South Melbourne players have the sash running the opposite way. Presumably because the jumpers are home-made and not standardised?
