My take on the game for what its worth is that we were outworked and outpressured by the Saints all night. They were clearly the best side on the night. No excuses. They came to play and put in a stellar performance. They also converted their opportunities.
From our end, we had a lot of players down. We rely on an even team performance to win and we did not have that last night. One positive though was the significantly improved performance in the centre clearances (bringing Papley in there early certainly helped) and clearances. They have been consistently causing us problems so that is a positive out of an otherwise forgettable game.
I guess people will look for scapegoats for such a performance. I think that at least half the team lowered their colours last night. They did not handle the heat that the Saints brought resulting in turnovers and poor decisions. I will single out one player though in Stephens. I was very positive about him till now but his lack of hardness is very un-Swans like. Unless he drastically improves in that area then his career with us, or elsewhere for that matter, is in serious jeapordy.
I'm hopefully that after 5 wins in a row this was a merely a short lapse and we will quickly re-group. North are a feisty team so we need to bring more pressure next week to win.Comment

I really want Stephens to succeed. Seems like a very nice young bloke and of course is a high draft pick. But this season has been terrible. He's looked average at VFL level and completely lost at AFL level. Sure, he can run but so could Jack Hiscox. At least Hiscox had some cracker Neafl (VFL) games - Stephens has not even had one of those.
I think if we get a fair offer, we should look at trading him. Sure, he might succeed elsewhere but it doesn't look like it's going to be with us.Comment

We don't have to win either of our next 2 games. What we do need is to find the right mix and positions. The winning performances by the Giants and the Saints shows that you don't need anywhere close to your best side to convincingly win a game against a superior side. A lot of other factors are far more important.
Even though Stephens was terrible, I would not drop him for the North game. I would like to see us back him in to improve his game. But this time give him a specific role to play. He's demonstrated that he has the skill set to play AFL footy, so I think there's something not right about how he's being developed. Even TheBloods, who Bangalore Swans knows is the talent guru on here, is a big fan of Stephens, so he must be okey.
I think we've mishandled the development of several players over the years, and it's cost us. Jones and Aliir are 2 that come to mind.
The Covid restrictions and perhaps Laidler have arrested the development of our reserves players. Who knows? But it seems we had a better record for developing players in the past.
I would play Melican, Gould, Warner, Campbell, Amartey, COR and McDonald next week. And especially Ling; his invisibility makes him very difficult to tackle.Comment

TB, you are really something! The whole team stank- Parker tried hard but wasn’t all that effective. We can forget all the others. Unfair to pick on one player incessantly when you could say the same 22 times over- they ALL made some basic mistakes and let the Saints create loose men at will. Pressure? Where the @@@k was Wicks, for example? Don’t give me some crap that he is there to play a role- any kid in our Academy could have run around like a headless chook like he did. I repeat I don’t want to single him out as the team as a whole was useless, but I’ve had this feeling for a while now and can’t see how he can deserve a spot. Rowie at least got a few kicks and was at the bottom of packs.
So please STFU about him- pick on someone else for a change!
But he is just crap. Sorry dont mean to be harsh but what a shocking player he is , 3 junktime disposals saved him from a second statless half in a month ! He is just another Jordan foote , we can forget about wondering if he will be a star or not , hes got no chance of that , he will be lucky to even be an Afl standard player hes got absolutely nothing going for him as a player . Embarrassing that he is who we thought was going to lead our midfield in the futureComment

When Rowbottom puts together a great couple of weeks like Blakey, TheBloods and other posters will admire him.

He’s tough but fair. Blakey used to face criticism from TheBloods and many other posters earlier in the year. Now TheBloods and many other posters are admiring of Blakey’s performances. Blakey made some errors last night but slack was given because of his previous 5 weeks and other good moments last night.

I don’t wanna single out DS. Had a poor game, but hard to find a few who didn’t. Tho’ when you get single digit touches, you can’t fluff 75% of them.
Overall, our kicking was terrible. Part of the reason for this was the lack of run to present a target - meaning either a kick to a contest or to a player standing still with his arms in the air. The resulting kicks were either short or too high (if they got that far) and led to yet another turnover against a team who were simply more up for the fight.
To be honest, this game is more a blight on STK as they are capable of much more than their spot on the ladder would suggest. They don’t turn up at all on too regular a basis.
With the above mentioned #5 pick, I hate to see kids dropped after 1 poor game. The next few games gives us a chance to mix things up a bit (despite the risk zero game time in the 2s). I’d leave out Wicks, who seems to escape the criticism that’s thrown at others. Also Ollie, whose kicking into attack has been dreadful at times this year - I’d be interested to see a showreel of butchered kicks to disadvantage featuring OF.Comment

No i will not , i kept my mouth shut and didnt mention him while he was out of the side . He played last night so he is fair game as far as im concerned. You say not to single anyone out , why would i ? Everyone else has performed and done their role most weeks , that is why we are 5th on the ladder at 13-7 ! So im not gonna drag Harry or Joey for what i thought were poor games . Wicks ive been consistent about and Stephens ive already singled out a few pages back , so its not just RB

By this I presume he thinks he is no good. It sounds like it. He doesn't like the young bloke. It is obvious. Last year and earlier this year, before injury, RB was really good. But that is never mentioned. He only says he is another Foote

Maybe it’s time to move all posts by TB and BS and the resulting responses regarding this game to the Rowbottom thread so that we can actually discuss what went wrong last night like adults.
I have been guilty previously of falling for their trolling but now realise that it is a waste of time especially when responding with facts as they are conveniently overlooked or dismissed and my opinions are deemed as not relevant so I have decided that responding to them is like complaining about your wife to your mother-in-law.
