Great to have Melican, Campbell and young McLean in. We do need a bit of height in defence and would consider, as some have suggested, in playing him down back like Reid does at times. We could then play Isaac at full forward for short spells, alternating with Wilbur- both very strong in the air and on leads. Campbell on HB alternating with Blakey. Harry and Fox on the smaller forwards.

Thanks Runner- I’m starting to get the picture! Perhaps due to the limited vision on the TV that I don’t appreciate his defensive role. Just wishing he could be involved in scores a bit more but in fairness he is young and hasn’t got a lot of games under his belt. I trust our coaches in picking him, even when I didn’t think he had earned his spot.
Happy now and hope he goes well against Norf, the Sins and then the finals!Comment

Re Wicks’ role and the fact that he (or Bell) doesn’t kick too many goals is not that different to the full forward or centre half forward.
The FF or CHF might kick 0-3 goals in most games in four whole quarters. The coaches and player review the whole four quarters and the key performance indicators will not be the goals kicked or missed that they focus on, but it will be the following that creates the chances for goals:
-how many contests they got to and brought the ball to the ground if they couldn’t mark it,
-how many times they broke away from their man to create a possible uncontested mark (for themselves or the other tall)
-did they run the agreed patterns to not get in the way of the other tall
-did they hold their spacing
-second efforts after not getting the mark etc
None of these things get on the regular stat sheets that we see.
Same for Wicks and Bell but their priorities are different than that of the talls (which is to create marking or crumbing opportunities).Comment

Wicks does hit the scoreboard, he's kicked 14 goals this year and 16 behinds. I believe a lot of those behinds could've easily been goals. I doubt we're having this conversation if he had kicked 25, which Hayward is currently sitting on (with only 8 behinds).
I think the Swans also need to be better at capitalising on Wicks offensive game.
He can run and run, create space for whoever, but unless the opposition see him as an offensive threat then he becomes far less effective.
When our other forwards are being double-teamed by defenders, we should be looking to make that defender accountable by hitting up Wicks.Comment

Thanks to barracuda and The Runner. I didn't discover AFL until we moved to Melbourne, and it took a long time and many trips to the MCG or The Rising Sun - which second, by the way is the thing I most miss about Melbourne.
You have put together an array of possibilities which have opened up my understanding and appreciation of what a particular player can do. Unfortunately TV doesn't focus on their exploits! He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. Hi all,
Excited for this match, it will be intriguing to see how our team responds to a loss last week and what is a dead rubber this week! Will we switch on?? Resting Mills, Franklin, Lloyd makes me wonder if the coaching staff already have one eye ahead to finals? Why wouldn't they!! Let's hope the players aren't thinking that way... One week at a time, as JL always says!
An area of concern this week will be the midfield battle. In their 10 games since their bye, the Roos have won the clearances 6 times, and they win by an average of 13 clearances.. Not too bad for a wooden spooner side!! BUT in CENTRE clearances it is a different story .. they have won the centre clearances 7 times out of 10 and drawn twice. Only lost them once. They've had 131 centre clearances to their opposition's 92!
They're very good at winning it out of the middle.. they have a formidable lineup of mids.. Simpkin, Stephenson, Anderson, Davies-Uniacke, Thomas.. they are all quick and powerful mids, very pro-active at the fall of the ball and capable of winning quick, clean clearances!! Our mids need to be on their toes. We know Parker will bring his A-game. He knows no other way! Will George go into the mids again?? Will Joey be able to have one of his wind back the clock games?? Will Rowy finally get going?? Will we continue with Paps at centre bounces?? I worry if these things don't happen their midfield will get on top and it will let them into the game the same way we couldn't close the door on the Bombers at the G a few weeks ago.
Fascinating to watch and find out. Can't wait!!

It’s so clear to see that role that they perform especially at the games if you’re not just fixated on the ball and who does what with the ball …there’s a huge role off the ball that’s so important ..and you only really have to listen to Longmire’s words over and over again to understand that
I loved James Rose …he was so skilful but he lacked what this team needed him to do ..that role in the team that was assigned to him to go with his skills and talent ..
Incidentally the last time I saw him play was at Henson Park in a NEAFL game ..that’ll be such a great place to watch AFLW and support our newest team…was there with my daughter so will be great to be there for their first game

Thank you Barracuda with your defence of Wicks’s role…you don’t just build a team by throwing in all your best players ..it’s always about roles ..I’ve been trying to say the same thing all time in my defence of Bell and Im glad Maltopia you’ve added other points and included Bell in this discussion of Wicks and small forwards .

The reality of it is the majority of the game is played without the ball, creating space for it to come to you or a team mate, trying to get it off the opposition or trying to deny the opposition an outlet/score.
But what does the media talk about? Goals and disposals. But the goals and disposals come from the team play.Comment

There was quite a lot of heresy regarding Will Hayward on RWO earlier in the year. My understanding is that he also tends to play a negating role on the oppositions best interceptor trying to take them away so they aren't in a position to intercept. He's certainly done it on Haynes (last year), AA, Lever etcComment

There are 36 players on the field plus subs in a four quartet game and just one ball, sometimes in the air, sometimes on the ground.

Good to see Melican back. He was good before he got injured. Is he the missing link? I think so. With him in the side we have a far greater chance of finals success. Without him we are a undersized backline that WILL be and has been exposed by much taller forwards. The new interpretations of the rules do not allow undersized backs to prosper. Except if you are Dogs then you can do anything you like, throw, push, hold etc.

The missing Ling on the other hand, I fear there's little chance he'll be found at AFL level. I think sightings are more likely in lower strata such as the Quaternary or SANFL.Last edited by Ruck'n'Roll; 14 August 2021, 04:57 PM.Comment

I'm not so sure Wolfy, sure he has the powerfull physique and pronouced brow ridges often associated with our primitive ancestors - but the missing link? I don't think so.
