And the passing train drivers on the horn as opposition players kicked for goal.
But I did see the great John Kennedy play one of the best rucking games I ever saw there one day.Comment

Hawks were the toughest team when Kennedy was coach. At Glenferrie, they used to turn the game into one massive pack of players and leave Hudson one out in the forward line. He was virtually unbeatable one on one. Way before modern tactics came in. Compared to now, game was a lot simpler. Saw him kick at least 12 there one day. The crowd in the old art deco stand near the goals at one end used to go off. The ground is now public space but the stand is still there. Hawthorn East Melbourne used to play district cricket there. Played there a few times- very short straight boundaries but you were a chance to run 5 if you hit it deep and square!

Royboy- reckon this post definitely qualifies you as 'father' of this site. Even before my time!Comment

I went to Glenferrie one day optimistic that South had a great chance because Hudson was injured. They replaced him with this kid from the Ressies called Michael (Gladys) Moncrief. I think he kicked 8+ goals that day and of course we lost. I remember terracing on the railway side of the ground was so steep they had metal railings to stop people falling forward onto the ground.Hawks were the toughest team when Kennedy was coach. A week has passed. It was insightful to read over the posts and take a measure of the mindset of RWO following that game. Few gems stood out - calls for young guys still learning their craft to be traded; a mention or two of Matt80; English usage lessons; Lud, who pointed out the real culprit in our loss i.e. the match committee; Barry, whose posts read like those of a meth head. The anger of my 'ol mate Stevoswan; and highlights of the calculated savagery and cruel violence of Toby Greene. What a week."Play like you can’t lose."Comment

That rings a bell. They certainly were the bad old days. Kennedy used to stand on top of the coaches box dressed in an old coat and roar throughout the whole game. Very intimidating arena. Spectators were very close to the game.I went to Glenferrie one day optimistic that South had a great chance because Hudson was injured. Those railings are still there, now overgrown with plants. It's a bit of a Planet of the Apes vibe looking at it.I went to Glenferrie one day optimistic that South had a great chance because Hudson was injured. People talk about Toby Greene being a thug but he pales into insignificance compared to the dirtiest player to play the game; Leigh Matthews. He deliberately went out of his way to hurt people and got away with it. I am sure Royboy and Blood Fever remember his disgraceful acts.Comment

I think all the cameras and slow-mo replays they have these days have helped weed most of the violence out of the game over the last
thirty or fourty years as this technology and the overall media coverage has grown. The game is a lot cleaner than it used to be, and
that is a good thing. The people who want to fight should just go off and become boxers or cage fighters, and be prepared to be hit back.Comment

Great player but involved in some of the most violent unprovoked acts in history. King hit and knocked out defenceless opponents on at least 5 occasions.People talk about Toby Greene being a thug but he pales into insignificance compared to the dirtiest player to play the game; Leigh Matthews. So true Nico. Our Ken Boyd was an angel compared to him. I was only a kid but Kenny missed more games than he played- or so it seemed!Comment
