Our problem in the final was lack of big bodied midfielders around the stopage, which kennedy and mills cover.

I wouldnt be suprised if we look for organic growth internally for 2022. And Reid is not in that equation.
Reid has been used as a defender in the last 5 minutes of a quarter. He would have been handy on Saturday given we leaked goals at the end of the first 3 quarters. As someone has pointed out, this has been an issue all season. However, if we were going to make him into a defender it would have been tried years ago.

Nico, I don't think a permanent switch was considered or tried as he was one of our few key forwards. It has only been in recent years the move has been made play that defensive role.

I think he could have made it as a CHB if we had the opportunity to do it.

Wasn't Reid a defender in his junior days? If memory serves me didn't the club pay him as a forward when he arrived?

O'Connor: We know what we need to do

"Sam Reid is down there this year"

          -Barry O'Connor

          Looks like it's happening.
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

No change to Rampe, McCartin #1(Tommy), Lloyd, are the core backline.

I feel that Reid, Melecan, McCartin #2 and O’Connor should cover the 3rd tall backman role.

Blakey and Fox/ Cunningham/ O’Riordan/ McInnerney - all have differs options as backs. However similar game play. One will be selected depending on match up needs or game plans of the day. Cunningham is core however may be needed for a run with role through the middle..

What about Gould? I see him as a potential 3rd tall, playing a role similar to Haynes at GWS. He's got decent height and size but also a great kick on him. I've hope he will finally debut this year and plays well.

I've listed our defenders by height, then weight to be able to compare a little easier. Figures were taken directly off the Swans Website, I had to Google for Paddy.

I thought it was interesting that Sam and Paddy, the two newest defenders are the biggest. I was a bit surprised to see just how similar Tom McCartin and Gould were.
Does this list change any thinking as to who is best suited to be our third tall?

                  * and Gould (oops)

He should get a few games the year! And hopefully more in future years.

If anyone thinks Sam is going to be the answer to our prayers as a key defender they forget he is over 30. Paddy, 26, Tom, 22, Will Gould, 21, Barry O'Connor, 23, Lewis Melican, 25. These are the future. Ramps, as good as he is, and Sam are over 30 and are there to teach the young guys. Sir Dane said his main mission at the moment is to teach the gounger guys. As usual totally selfless.

Lots of competition for that key defender role which is great as its really up for grabs.

This thread was started in August last year. I don't think anyone is stating he's the answer to our prayers right now. It was more that we just got confirmation that he will be defending this season. He'll be a depth player but could play a role for us when needed. Handy player to have around... IF he can stay injury-free.

Agree. But I think the end is near and he sees the final curtain.

Yes, as you said, very much a teaching role this season.

Campbell is no longer training with the defenders. So I doubt he will be wasted down there.
