The way things are going in trade week so far infers that top line players, like Taranto and Jackson, are expensive, while 2nd line players, like Logue and Acres, who are ostensibly going for 3rd round picks, are cheap.

I can see why Francis is not even worth a 4th rounder. If Melican can find another club, I'm sure it would be a give away. We may even have to pay part of his 2023 salary.

Just so long as he doesn't come back in the same condition as Randal McMurphy.

            2nd Ruck
This year Sam did Stirling work, but with his injury history, he's a week to week proposition - and one whose birth certificate will also be an increasingly important factor.
I see signs that Amarty could very well fulfill the ruck/forward part of Sams role, not so sure if he's capable of being sent as an extra into defence yet.
McLean is simply not equipped as a relief ruck. He's the same height as Amarty but has too little spring to compensate.

I think he would make an excellent relief ruck. He could certainly crack packs and generate spills when stationed forward, allowing Logan to do his 360 degree key forward thing.
Ladhams and Esava would make an extremely vigorous ruck combination, which in turn reduces the need for another big body and n the midfield.

I think the cats may keep him because Hawkins is getting on a bit, and Cameron is at his best when allowed to do the 360 degree forward thing, rather than anchoring the forward line.

I agree. This would look very good for us, but it's hard to make it happen this year.

Next year, Ratugolea, Buddy, Reid, Amartey, McLean and Hickey will all be out of contract (unless extended), so that could be right moment to reshape our ruck and ruck/forward options.

I’ve included ESPNs latest rankings here, not because they authoritative - their author has definite hits and misses and personal favourites like every other draft watcher - but because he does provide detailed notes on the players.

Footywire says Lachlan McAndrew is out of contract this year, but Charlie Gardiner says he's contracted for next year. Normally you would think Gardiner should be right, but who knows for sure?

Anyway, I suppose that might mean that we have another year of sketchy info on McAndrew to mull over. I wonder why he got 2½ years when he's shown so little. It's not like thee was any competition for his services.

Maybe that's why we are considering giving Naismith another year, because McAndrew really can't be considered a 3rd ruckman at his present level. I would delist Naismith anyway.

We can't afford the risk with Naismith. I mean he would not cost us much money wise but the chances of him playing even 20 games is extremely low.

Our recruiting team seem to be asleep at the wheel in this trading period. Maybe we have two National Draft picks we want and are confident of getting.

No thread for this question but will there be any changes in the coaching staff? Now Kennedy has retired, will Longmire be tempted to bring him in as a development coach instead of Laidler? Any other coaching changes as the GF showed up the lack of daring to make any moves?

20 Games? That would be a big enough miracle to start a new religion.

In 8 of the 10 years Naismith has been with the Swans, specifically, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, he has played in a grand total of 3 games and amassed the magic number of 25 disposals.

He's an unrestricted free agent. Let him go to Geelong and they can give us Jack Bowes and Pick 7.

Madness if he gets a new contract no matter how good a guy he is.

I'm catching up on footy after a bit of time off. It seems as far as the trade period goes we are most likely looking to be bit players. Still chances to trade players at the margins and picks.

                              As regards trade ideas:

                              * I like the left-field SANFL ruck Harry Boyd suggestion: Harry Boyd Draft Profile - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central (formerly AFL Draft Central). He seems to be a prodigiously early developer! More seriously, my main concern is not so much his size, but his tank. Will he be able to make the transition to AFL? I've heard worse suggestions and I like posters coming up with something original.

                              * Another left-field (and marginal) suggestion: West Coast have delisted Jackson Nelson. Apparently what he's best at is being a small lockdown defender and he often got used out of position. He also seems to be renowned as really tough, and a good team man. He would come free. Do we have any use for such a player? It's hard to see him displacing any of our current 22. He's more in the mould of Nick Smith and doesn't have the hurt and rebound factor that our other backmen all do. Is there still a place for such a player in AFL? We played Ryan Clarke for the second half of this season. Nelson would be an equivalent, but at the other end of the field. I don't know if he'd be interested but if we don't want to offer him a list spot, could we entice him to our VFL squad? He is originally from Victoria so probably not wedded to staying in WA.

                              * I'm happy with the Francis recruitment assuming it's a thing. Obviously he's just for depth - quite possibly as a replacement for Melican but even if he's an addition he's a handy bit of back-up. He was one of the depth KPDs I suggested last year when we didn't get anyone (until we picked up Paddy in the PSSD). His best moments are impressive - just not very consistent. Or rather consistently underachieving.

                              * I'd definitely be interested in Ratugolea. I take the point that he's similar to Amartey and McLean - but I think he's better. He's more agile and a better ruck than McLean and stronger than Amartey. I've seen him play matches where I've been scared of how good he was as a raw youngster. He lived in Griffith NSW until he was 6 and then moved to just the other side of the border (Cobram, across the Murray from Barooga). I don't know how much he would cost. I think our 2nd rounder might be a bit too much but a future 3rd seems a bit light on (unless we're relieving Geelong of a significant salary).

                              * Tarryn Thomas was worth a sniff but if the asking price was too high then glad we kept moving. Every trade can only work at the right price.

Unlike many other posters, I'm not of the view that our granny flogging means the system is broken and we need wholesale change in players or coaches. I think we mostly have the cattle and our only significant need is KPP depth. I have faith in Ladhams to step up when Hickey can't. I was delighted to see that our top 3 finishers in the B&F were our young starting midfield - just so promising! They will all continue to improve. Fantastic that the weight is off Parker and the other senior players to be the #1. Amazing to see Chad, Rowy and Errol all have a PAV rating equivalent to a #1 draft pick!! Superb drafting!!

I don't have other bright ideas right now. Just watching with interest.

I think this is the right place for this question. Usually this thread is for 'players and personnel' - i.e. coaches, physios, performance staff etc. I'm not aware of any changes in the pipeline and I don't think we need any. Haven't heard anything about JPK becoming a coach but I do wonder if we could do better than Laidler in that role. We used to have Rhyce! He quickly proved himself overqualified and progressed to line coach, assistant coach of the year and then senior coach. Laidler seems to be at his level but I wouldn't mind trying someone more dynamic or fresh.

Another interesting question, is there any risk that Tom Harley could be recruited by the AFL to fill the spot Brad Scott has vacated? If so, then what?? I think Charlie would quite possibly step in to the CEO role, but not a given. Our COO Drew Arthurson (2nd most senior executive at the Swans) would be another possibility but he doesn't have a footy background and I think that's a significant deficit. Potentially that means he could leave the footy to the footy people but I think having someone like Tom in the role is ideal. Official AFL Website of the Sydney Swans Football Club. All the latest news, videos, results and information. I would prefer we cast a wider net than getting Arthurson if we wind up needing a new CEO. Hopefully Tom stays around a while yet.
