I thought it was a really solid game from two of the forgotten Swans in Reid and Ronke.

I’m not that keen on Reid as a forward mainly because I think his goal kicking let’s him down but he’s always been a good mark and covers the ground really well.

Ronke I thought was a near certainty to be delisted last year, but seems like he could end up in the best 22 after all.

Likewise, encouraging to see hat Ladhams could bring albeit against substandard opposition.

And we ended up winning the free kicks against WC in Perth. When was the last time that happened?

Ronke bumped him off the ball, took possession and then rifled a kick to a leading McLean around 45 out from goal. Unfortunately, Mclean didn't take the mark, as it was a bit low and he fumbled under pressure.

Pretty much everything he did yesterday was done with a confidence he's not shown since his first handful of games. Last year he was thrown in to a game late in the season and looked all at sea. I felt a bit sorry for him because it must be hard to come in and pick up the pace of AFL after playing very little for several years, even at reserves level. I don't know if he was aware enough to realise that the "mark" he took in the lead up to yesterday's goal might be called play-on for not travelling the required distance, or if he just fancied the snap rather than the set shot, but there was no hesitation in his play on, and it was a sweet kick right off the boot.

That might be a good game (ie with uneven pressure from the opposition) to win his confidence back long term. I imagine Bell will be replaced next week by Wicks. Then the two of them will likely be playing off against each other for preferred option once Papley returns. (I'm assuming Papley will be out for at least another week and/or might play a game in the VFL once he is available to play.)

According to the AFL app we concede an average of almost 2 goals a game from unforced defensive 50 turnovers this year which is the worst equal in the competition. That’s something that needs addressing as that could easily cost us in tightly contested games.
Jake seems to be good for at least one goal a game however given the number of kick ins he takes the law of averages would suggest he is bound to have the odd turnover.
Given that and how important that keeping possession in your defensive zone is should we be looking for him to maybe pass the baton on and if so who should it be ? Is Braeden the heir apparent or does Nick take on more of them? I like Nick receiving the ball further from our goals as he offers so much run and has a great kick and is usually very efficient with his disposals so that doesn’t hold as much appeal to me. Do we have another option to consider that isn’t obvious to me either already in the team or developing their skills in the reserves? Or is it the case that Jake is still the best man for the job ?
Someone recently suggested using him on a wing and taking advantage of his foot skills delivering into the forward 50 which I like as an option moving forward.

With the kick out situation, this is probably the only area where we miss Dawson. I think we have him well covered in other areas so it feels nice to think that is the only downside to not having him.

I think Jake has taken over the kick ins because the others made more errors than he did. I suspect that Rampe's clangers are greater than Lloyd's. Jake takes on the bulk of the toughest kicks out of defence. Sometimes there is just no where to kick it. If he kicks it long, he knows it's probably coming back in. So he tries to thread the needle, or the he and the receiving player are not on the same page. It's not always the kickers fault when the ball is turned over.

I do think however that Lloyd has been a bit down this year in his kicking. I suspect it's a mental thing. Some inexplicable loss of concentration at times, and not just in his kicking. It's still early in the season. Let's give it a bit more time.

We do have some other kick in options, particularly Blakey and Campbell, who are both excellent kicks and longer kicks than Lloyd. I would suspect that they would make just as many, if not more clangers, than Lloyd at this stage.

I have a favorite moment to add. About 3/4 of the way through the third quarter Gulden did something really strong and good (can’t remember exactly but it was probably just cleaning up somebody’s mess and forcing a throw in) anyway, as he ran back to position the camera caught him and he was ANGRY like blue steel. He was not going to stand for the crap we were serving up and he was taking charge. He’s our next captain.

Tom McCartin makes at least one clanger turnover a game. Heath Grundy seemed to give away the compulsory holding free in front of goals early in many games. It is difficult being a back man, particularly close to goals. We don't seem to be doing the short kick out to the back pocket this year.

I agree that Lloyd's kick outs are not up to scratch and in most games he serves up some very ordinary kicks from goal. Even in general play he seems to take forever when he has to kick, and most times are high floating kicks that put our players under pressure.

Campbell should take all the kick outs from goal in future.

The last couple of years Lloyd frequently kicked short to Dawson or Rampe, whose more accurate and penetrating kicking got us quickly out of defence and often straight onto the attack. So far Lloyd has not taken the short option as much this season, but it might be time to reconsider if they want to persist with him doing the kick-ins.
