A fair result- Lions clearly better but we showed some fight. Quite a few of our boys couldn’t contribute enough, while the Lions were very even and cleaner most game. We tried hard but were harassed and pressured so could only get our game going in patches- not enough against a top team. We now know that we have to play a lot more consistent, team football if we are to challenge. Buddy had little help and our backs fumbled a lot. I don’t want to single out anyone so I’ll just say we have some way to go and missed Paddy more than I realised. Paps was clearly underdone but he needed the run. Who would we have brought in instead?
Chad, JMac and the Lizard were well below their best and Mc Lean had a poor game. Ladhams tried very hard as did Mills, Parks and young Errol. Sammy not the worst. Hope Logan and Paddy will be back next week!Comment

The points about our evolution are the correct takes on tonight’s game.
When we started to see all the green shoots in 2020 of the change in game plan and young players like JMac coming through and Tom McCartin going down back in the second half of the season and so on, you would have thought on a normal trajectory of improvement this is the year we ‘maybe’ make a move into the eight. The fact is at the start of last year, none of us had seen Gulden or Campbell play AFL footy, and now they’re best 22. The Chad had played one game. Hell, it was this time last year Blakey was sent back to twos.
We are tracking beautifully. Brisbane are ahead of us but we will learn a lot and are closing the gap.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Slightly odd how most of were worried before the game, that we didn't have the height to match Brisbane's tall forwards, and it ended up being their small and medium forwards that did most of the damage. While our smaller forwards were largely ineffective. Although, some of that was luck: often, a scrubbed kick or a scrambled ground ball found a clear Brisbane player. While at the other end, the ball seemed to bounce away from our forwards.
Though I suppose the margin was more or less a fair reflection of the game. We didn't take our chances when we had the better of the game early. They took theirs in the second. After that, playing catch up against a tough and cohesive Brisbane, was always going to difficult.
Still, there were positives. Firstly, we didn't give up, and a couple of times in the second half, we came within a goal or two of putting them under genuine scoreboard pressure. A lot of the comeback was due to a vintage Buddy performance. Age hasn't caught up with him. Which suggests that he might go around again next year. Mills and Parker put in tough midfield performances. A lot of our younger players had good patches, without being consistent enough to turn in match winning games.
Obviously a fair bit of room for improvement, but with a good run with injuries, I think we can make that improvement.Comment

I thought we looked much better when Papley and his speed was introduced into the centre bounces.Comment

Haven't watched the game yet but results like this provide a great learning experience in the game review. No disgrace getting beaten by Brisbane who hardly have anyone injured at present.
Rather be us than a number of other sides who got beaten this weekend, we are at least going places. Oh the joy of the Crows getting thrashed :-)Comment

Mills has become our best player , Heeney frustrates, cant keep relying on Buddy to get us out of trouble . Chad is sensational , teams are putting more time into Blakey , really shows at the ground . Keep Paps and Jmac in the mids
Mclean isnt muchComment

It staggers me that Lloyd continues to take the kick ins. He just bombs it long down the line and more often then not, it just comes straight back in.
When Blakey or Campbell take the lock ins, they nearly always hit targets and set us up to attack so much better.Comment

I reckon Campbell is going to be an absolute gem of a player - doing so well for an undersized defender, reads the ball well and generally uses it well. Many similarities to Mills when he first came in to the team playing out of position but doing super well too."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I think Reid has lost some of his jumping height, made his marking largely ineffective. Lions also we’re very good St bumping him off the ball. Personally would have Amertery over him for the rest of the season.
Lloyd - decision-making and kicking was poor today.
We missed having Paddy in the backline.
For me Hickey is our most important player, the sooner he is back the better the team.
Brisbane are very good, they’ll give a Demons a red hot go, provided they don’t choke again.Comment

Kennedy played in the midfield and it seemed Rowbottom played more outside with Florent moved into defence.
Lots of players tried hard and were good in patches (Mills was excellent throughout): Buddy, Gulden, Campbell, Warne, Blakey, Heeney and Ladhams. Florent was around the ball a lot when it was in our D50.
McClean and Lloyd were not that effective today.
Reid took some good marks but should have kicked that goal from the set shot that hit the post, and he gave away a free kick that led straight to a goal.
But we let them into the D50 too much and we were sloppy getting it out at times, so they got a lot of snaps, turnover and chaos goals.
The ball was not in our F50 that much and most of our forward 50 snaps were points.
Just not our day.Comment

Ollie Florent played a great game on Baillie and Cameron only got into the game when Harry went off. Ollie's game was so good I would look at him as a replacement for Lloyd in the backline. His gave us plenty of run, thrashed his man and is a far superior kick than Lloyd.
McLean showed that is but a depth player. Refuses to play in front, tries to mark from behind, for a big bloke is easily knocked off the contest and is genuinely useless when the ball hit the ground. His only value is taking the odd mark up front, then he missed that dead set sitter in the first quarter and then missed that goal on the stroll (not a fast runner) and didn't see Heeney. Logan is far better when the ball hits the ground and gets to contests.
We certainly missed Paddy McCartin and Logan McDonald.
Lloyd's disposal was a disgrace. That last quarter turnover should not have happened. When he didn't roost it the player past the contest it was beyond my comprehension. I don't get why he doesn't try to get the ball out of our defensive 50 when there is an option. I thought he was good in the first quarter but slipped badly after that.
I can forgive Ronke and Papley because there was no vision going forward.
Gardiner is a dog.
Hayward is a genuine front runner and continually makes crucial mistakes. In the first play his kick was way off target and could have had a shot. Out on the full from a set kick and grubbed a shot for goal. When one on one when the ball hits the ground he gets outpointed. A bloody awful game.
Hickey in and he and Ladhams rest up forward because Reid is the dunce of the comp in front of goal.
Now that we see that Ollie can play back it's time to put Campbell's explosive play into the midfield. He is a hard nut and kicks it a mile.
Poor game by Jmac. Looked timid at times and disposal was rubbish.
Kennedy should be the medi sub every week. Yes he was in and under but boy he refuses to move the ball on quickly from a mark or free, and should never be in at the centre bounce. If he happens to have the ball fall in his lap he either gets caught or stuffs it up.
Next week if Hickey is right then he plays. Logan comes in as does Paddy. Out goes Tortoise McLean, Reid and Bell. Harry looks like he has a groin injury so there is another to come in. Kennedy the sub.Last edited by Nico; 1 May 2022, 09:32 PM.Comment
