Sun for a steal: Cats pick up midfielder Jack Bowes, No.7 pick in high-priced deal (afl.com.au)

Wow, this is sickening! Bowes AND pick 7 for just a future third! The Suns probably feel guilty for their shabby treatment of Bowes and that's why they didn't demand more.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Agree , what a bizarre trade and why would you do this with Geelong - is Bowes that bad that only Geelong was prepared to put him on the list in return for pick 7.

No - lots of clubs would. But, as they pay their players with magic beans, Geelong is the only one with salary cap space.

On that note, I heard rumours that Geelong were going to spread the $800k pa for Bowes contract was going to spread over 4 years and not 2. Surely that is not on??

Several clubs had the space to accommodate Bowes's contract. He chose Geelong, and weirdly seems to have agreed to giving them more years' service to earn the money he is already owed (as a result of Gold Coast pushing back payments from prior years).

This is the outcome when the AFL takes its eyes of the ball. In no way does the trade and contract negotiation fit with their stated aim of competition equalisation.

Yes, Bowes playing for 4 years for the same money as 2 years makes no sense, especially as he is not from the Geelong area. Of course, that money doesn't include the side property deal that the AFL does not seem to investigate. Then the deal does make sense for Bowes!

Bowes contract was raised on last night's Fox Footy Trade Table, with Dermie making the point Bowes is effectively playing 2 extra years for nothing based on his existing contract.

What I don't understand and haven't seen any explanation, is why Gold Coast has thrown pick 7 along with Bowes to Geelong for just their 3 rounder????? Geelong's 3rd rounder alone would appear suffice, particularly given now Bowes current contract is going to spread over 4 years instead of 2!

Seeing how top end clubs like Richmond (3 flags in 4 years) and reigning premiers Geelong have drafted, makes me shake my head how we were treated & penalised by the AFL for recruiting Buddy after winning the 2012 flag. Have no gripes with what Richmond & Geelong have done (as long as it's all above board, which is another topic) but the sheer double standards by the AFL. Like KTigers has raised, I've given up trying to point this out with my mates here in Melbourne because they just don't wanna see it.

Why is it the AFL have allowed this to happen. Surely this is against the spirit of the competition. If one club is forced to salary dump $850K over 2 years, then that is the amount Geelong have to accept over the next two years as part of their salary cap, regardless of the fact pick 7 is included or Bowes has agreed to a renegotiation.
It was certainly made clear in the Franklin trade their was no room any negotiations over the period of the contract.
Is it simply a case of one rule for some and one for the others

I think this is the thing that gives us the collective @@@@s.

'If' Geelong had taken his full salary on the initial terms of two years, you'd get the incentive of the pick.

But when they can take it and then negotiate away, it's a nonsense and totally contrary to the standards we were held to.

Olly Henry now saying he won't go back to Collingwood. The Geelong offer must be very juicy. Maybe he is attracted by free coffees at a specific cafe.

My mate who's a Cats fan and lives down there tells me it's more than just them. Ambassadors and influencers are everywhere among the partners, and it's amazing how many of them are with club sponsors. He laughs openly at this and all the other rorts.

That would be the cafe next to that new housing development!

We laugh but it's now becoming a serious matter for the AFL when a Geelong boy at a big Melbourne club plays the go home card.

The AFL have given Gold Coast so many concessions over the years to keep them going. Most have been extra picks, which just end up at Melbourne clubs eventually.

Why couldn't the AFL make one more concession this time which would allow Bowes to stay on GC's list, like a limited salary cap concession. Or have the AFL pay part of Bowes contract so GC could make a market value trade for him. That would make a lot more sense then just throwing them extra picks which doesn't solve anything.

No club has been given the amount of access to top end players than GWS have, and look where they are after all of it..

The solution lies in finding a way for all clubs, and particularly expansion clubs, to pay a fair market wage to players and have the ability to retain players on an equal basis.

One solution to the go home factor is to allow a player that registers for the draft to declare that he is a Mummy's Boy. The AFL will set up a fund to facilitate the player's mother to visit frequently or even stay with their son if the kid is drafted to an interstate club. For example, the AFL will pay travel and living expenses for the mother. A player who does not make a Mummy's Boy declaration before the draft can never use the go home factor as a reason for switching clubs. An alternative would be a Mummy's Boy draft, just for these kids. They can go to the club they want, but paid the minimum wage until they grow up and can register for the regular draft as an adult.

There is a pretty remarkable admission from Jason McCartney in here they are now on the look out for Mummy's Boys.

The killer quote: The draft board for us and maybe some other interstate clubs, it's not the same draft board.
